If I'm DePaul, I'm looking for someone who has been successful as a HC at some level. maybe way down the food chain, but successful experience as a HC somewhere. I dont think you can afford to just grab an assistant coach and hope That school needs a winner NOW. Not unlike our deal with football this year.

wow , have they ever fallen way off the radar. They were big time in the 1980's.
And bigger in the 70's.

Actually, one of my best buddies is from Arkansas. An aeronautical engineer. Funny, sharp, intelligent, now lives in Florida.
I see what you did there.

I once spent a Saturday night in 2003 on campus in Fayetteville at an inn just off their quad the UofA hotel school operated. It was an old Victorian building called (I'm not making this up) Carnall Hall. The best name for a campus hotel imaginable. It was a memorable evening. Arkansas was playing at Kentucky in football, the game went seven overtimes, and Arkansas won. I spent five hours in the bar drinking and watching the game on TV with nostalgic alums in town for a visit.

So I've got a sweet spot for Arkansas. The NW corner, at least!
Great hotel across the street from my daughters sorority house. Wonderful place to watch a football game!

More successful in the 70s in some ways.

But they rose to number one in the 80s (Cummings and Aguirre) and then had 3 consecutive first round losses as a 1 seed. In some ways those early losses by DePaul, as the tourney was beginning it's expansion, got the momentum going for March Madness. To a large degree, the upsets of the first couple rounds really are what draws the interest.

When the tourney was 48 teams it could be tough for top teams. Not sure how many others got upset at the time, but when you take a top 50 team and give them a warm up game, it probably reduces the edge the top team has.

I know it’s 2021, but I would be shocked if IU hired a minority as their next head coach unless he was an ex IU player.

I look forward to cheering on coach Underwood's coaching tree lol. So who in ya'all's opinion will get a head coaching position first? A. Antigua B. Coleman C. field . These are heady times for Illinois basketball and recruiting. So I am coming in a different angle that is recruiting orientated because I love Illinois basketball.
Now that being said will we get one of our beloved as an assistant if we lose one of our tremendous assistants? And who would be the best fit for Coach and Ill. A. Thomas B. Powell C. Underwood D. Brown E. field.
C. bonus points...easy cuz I believe in positive reinforcement...for a beach house...what is Orlando Antigua's Illini family association before he joined the staff.

Get all of these and the first correct response will get the free use of my beach house for 1 year as long as you pay for the staff. I...L...L...

What’s that mean? They’ve hired minority coaches before at IU. Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson to name two
They treated Davis like well you know and Sampson was a 'hero' for like two seconds before they found out who he really was.

Davis didn’t get hired he was “elevated”. True they hired Sampson but only after IU’s president at the time , Herbert, demanded that a minority be hired to replace Davis. Look it up if you don’t believe me.

Murry Bartow, Antigua's assistant at South Florida, is former Illini Coach Gene Bartow's son.

I have no reason not to believe you. I just think they want a home run hire and won’t care what race they are.

I’ll go with Antigua as first to get HC gig and the field for next assistant.

There are an awful lot of butt hurt IU fans that think that Alford should have replaced Knight. He walks on water in Indiana. So the fans have come up with these wild and I mean wild conspiracies as to why he's not the coach. I have a friend whose as big of Alford supporter as there is and his theory is that Alford didn't get the job because they hired Davis because Jesse Jackson threatened to boycott the University. The minority hire excuse on Sampson doesn't surprise me. Heck they wanted Stevens way back then. Time for that fan base to look in the mirror long and hard.
There is still a big group that want Alford 20+ years later.

College Basketball World Reacts To Juwan Howard Job Speculation

-------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't read previous pages of this thread, so please delete if redundant.......I found this odd given the short time Mr. Coward has been a head coach....jmho
Thanks for posting. That said, it reads like the "reporting" that seems to constantly come out of Evanston about how in demand by NFL teams Fitzy is. The only one who seems to believe it is Fitzy.
