I'd be shocked if BU was interested in the Texas job, but I said the same thing about Loyola's chances of beating us.
Wealthiest public university in the country....big money for the new coach...reason Lon Kruger left UI for the Hawks. Think he regrets the 20 million (IIRC) the received when he jumped? Money can't buy you happiness, but it gives you a down payment.

To be clear I never said BU would have interest just that UT would have interest in him. Not sure how BU feels about Austin.
Obviously stranger things have happened, but I just can't imagine that BU going to Texas is realistic. Certainly they can make him a ridiculous offer, but I imagine Whitman would do whatever he can to match, or come close.

And I don't think Texas is in any better shape than we are heading into the future.

I feel like we kinda got BU at the right time. If he was 10 years younger I'd worry about him leaving, but the difference between what he is building at Illinois and what he could build at Texas is basically negligible IMO. Texas would have to give him a hell of an offer and I'm not sure they'd do that for a 57 year old with very little post-season success (not really a shot at BU, he got his start pretty late, especially in a P5 HC capacity).

Texas just seem like a horrible place to coach in general. I look at Mac Brown and Rick Barnes records and think... why were those guys fired or asked to resign
They think they're football coach should basically be Nick Saban and their basketball coach should be some Calipari/K/Self hybrid.

Saban post-Brown "exploratory" trip to Austin 5 yrs ago boosted his Bama salary by 3m/yr.

Totally makes sense, and apologies, did not meant to imply you were saying that.

And Austin is great, but I have a friend down there and the cost of living, especially housing costs are insane. That said, I'm sure that's $ peanuts for anyone UT goes after and they'll be dangling some big time $$.

I believe Mac Brown "retired"... but maybe it was an "urged" retirement..

yea, if i'm BU, i'm on the phone with the texas AD right now (before they go too far with beard). And let a few things leak here and there to get JW's attention.

I'd be surprised if BU would be interested in a Big 12 coaching job because of his short stint at OSU. I'd be even more surprised if a Big 12 team would consider hiring him because of his short stint at OSU.

Tourgeon to Oklahoma or Texas with Shaka moving on to Marquette. Chris Beard would be a natural to move to Texas. A friend of mine just texted me that Texas could go after Underwood. Purely speculation, but Texas does have appeal and a lot of money.

I don’t think schools look down on a guy who made a jump to a significantly better job. It comes with the territory of being a middling program. I don’t remember now, but didn’t Underwood do something like triple his salary when he took the Illinois job?

Agree about his reasons, just thought there would be a bad taste left.

Whether Coach goes somewhere else or stays in the Illinois Prairielands forever, any good administrator/CEO of an organization will always have a plan B... plan C... and plan D. So it should be with the Illini.

Illini fans know all too well never to get too complacent about anything. Fool me once... shame on you... fool me twice... you know the rest.

Follow your bliss. That’s the ticket. You only go ‘round once in life so you gotta grab all the gusto you can (old Schlitz beer commercial creed). For a young baller. For a coach. For anyone. Make your decision and live with the consequences. Take your shot if you choose to. Or, don't.

A top program has to be bigger than any one thing, including a coach. Otherwise, it’s just a cult of personality. Continue to build a solid infrastructure and coaching-style culture (and recruiting of a certain character of young men) that’s bigger than any one man and you’ve got something. Otherwise, it’s just a foundation of sand.

The Illini have taken some big body blows over the years as you guys all know. And it’s still here. And thriving. And it’s come back from the dead more than a time or two. As long as you’ve got the right guy at the top of the pyramid, everything else falls into place.

Words to live by? “Whose got next!?” Or, “Next man up!”

Because, to quote Paul Simon (the singer/songwriter, not the senator):

What is the point of this story?
What information pertains?
The thought that life can be better
Is woven indelibly
Into our hearts and our brains.

That sums up the fan/booster base of Texas football and basketball; IU hoops; OSU, Michigan & ND football.... the list goes on and on.

They're highly skilled in allowing the best to become the enemy of the good. Occasionally they get there for a while. Then they languish in the wilderness of their own doing.

Porter Moser to Indiana.....hmmmmm...possible.
I'd take that. When they are talking names like Brad Stevens, Chris Beard, Scott Drew, John Beilein, Eric Musselman, even Bruce Pearl, I'd view Porter Moser as a win for Indiana opponents. No one knows if Porter can recruit when he will be going up against the strongest schools in the nation, and i'm not 100% sold that he's a great coach.

Think Beard ends up at UT but Brad will be on UT's short list for sure.

UT is DEFCON 1 for TTU and Beard sticking together. UT reached out to Beard last year and was willing to fire Shaka if he wanted the job and he turned them down (after a TTU raise). TTU has to ask themselves is Beard interested in the job now that it doesn't require having another guy lose his job in order to take the UT job? Because nothing has really changed the dynamic in Lubbock in the past 12 months between TTU and Beard.

No one knows if his success will extend beyond Krutwig.
