Arlington, Virginia
He showed up at Texas Tech and instantly took them to an elite 8 and the title game.

Why would he not think he can be successful at one of the easiest schools to recruit to in the nation.
Oh, he can be, for a while. Penders had a long, successful tenure there. Barnes achieved great things. It seems a particularly volatile place recently. They used not to care a lot about hoops relative to football.

Austin is a hell of a lot nicer than Champaign lol
Not if you like to have water...
Also, 100F for a month in the summer sucks.
Also, their traffic REALLY sucks. I-35, 183, 360, mopac, 620, 290, it all sucks.
Also, housing prices are stupid.
Also, the failure of the recent electric grid.
Also, basketball is an afterthought.

As far as basketball being an afterthought, we are clearly a basketball crazy school. And Underwood is always touting playing in front of packed houses every night, so I do think that’s a draw for him.

I am wondering what our expectations are for the program now and if they are more reasonable with UT. For instance, if Underwood had a Painter like career (I.e in tourney most years but generally not a top seed or serious contender. A couple of S16 runs but can’t seem to get over the hump to a F4), would we be okay with that? If Underwood maintains the level of success he’s had the last 2 years but can’t get to a F4 after say, 10 years, does his seat get warm?

I think Underwood’s job is safe for a long time, and I think we are targeting greater heights than Painter has achieved, but if that was our ceiling not sure I would be calling for his head. Just curious what others’ expectations are going forward.

The IU press conference was hard to watch. Painful if you are an IU fan. Something is not right in that whole ordeal.
I agree TC. I tried to watch it but kept nodding off. He might turn out to be an ok coach but he definitely did not win the press conference.

It always seemed funny to talk about location when it comes to coaching jobs. It seems like such a tiny factor on where people go to coach

Man, my IU buddy is DRINKING the kool aid (and maybe something else). He is all-in. Granted, I must admit, with Matta, this is about as good as IU could get in their current state.

Woodsen brings 20 years of NBA coaching chops, obviously Matta brings the college side. He will have a heckuva staff behind him.

I think he'll need 2 years of rebuilding. He'll hit the portal hard. Get the 3-point snipers to put around TJD (I think he stays).

Only on an Illini message board can people argue that Champaign, IL is better than Austin, TX.
I lived in both places. I’m just NOT a fan of Austin, and I never saw the draw for people (and, my snowmobile never runs).

I still don't get it, I think Matta applied for the job and didn't pass the physical, but he can be an assistant something?

By being the "associate athletic director for men’s basketball administration" he can do his thing off the court, so I guess he wouldn't have to take the same physical.
