If the wife is not happy, no one is happy...It always seemed funny to talk about location when it comes to coaching jobs. It seems like such a tiny factor on where people go to coach

I don't think he would come back on the cheap. Do you?By being the "associate athletic director for men’s basketball administration" he can do his thing off the court, so I guess he wouldn't have to take the same physical.
No, I'm sure the boosters ponied up for him. Now I hear they're trying to Larry Brown to join them too. Guess it would be a triumvirate with 2 of the 3 not being able to be on the floor. Together I guess the 3 of them might make more than Calipari's $8 million.I don't think he would come back on the cheap. Do you?
Basketball by committee. It will be interesting to see how this works to build a program. It worked in football, for example, at Wisconsin with Alvarez when maintaining a program, but building up from what IU has become will be very different. No, I'm sure the boosters ponied up for him. No louder than Ben Johnson in the north woods of Minnesota. If Micah Shrewsberry is hired to coach Penn State in a forest, does it make a sound on the Loyalty board?
Maybe they'll make Larry the Compliance Officer. He should be pretty familiar with what constitutes a rules infraction. No, I'm sure the boosters ponied up for him. You’d think after all the issues they had with Sampson - which they’ve arguably still never recovered from - IU would think twice before bringing a walking NCAA violation like Brown onto campus.Maybe they'll make Larry the Compliance Officer. IMHO, the Painter level will work for a while. We are coming off the worst decade in modern UI basketball history. However, we, as a fanbase, are needing a NC. We may never get it (%$&^ Loyola!), but we will not be satisfied until we have it. If memory serves, PU has never made the F4. We have, and we expect to again, and this time, finish the job!As far as basketball being an afterthought, we are clearly a basketball crazy school. And Underwood is always touting playing in front of packed houses every night, so I do think that’s a draw for him.
I am wondering what our expectations are for the program now and if they are more reasonable with UT. For instance, if Underwood had a Painter like career (I.e in tourney most years but generally not a top seed or serious contender. A couple of S16 runs but can’t seem to get over the hump to a F4), would we be okay with that? If Underwood maintains the level of success he’s had the last 2 years but can’t get to a F4 after say, 10 years, does his seat get warm?
I think Underwood’s job is safe for a long time, and I think we are targeting greater heights than Painter has achieved, but if that was our ceiling not sure I would be calling for his head. Just curious what others’ expectations are going forward.
Purdue made it to the FF in the late '60s when Rick Mount was there. Lost to Lew Alcindor & UCLA in the final IIRC. Since then, the Elite 8, most recently that heartbreaking OT loss to UVa in 2019 (which was an absolute knock-down, drag-out classic), is as close as they've come. It always amazed me that Keady would finish at or near the top of the BT regularly (particularly in the '80s when he seemed to have our number) but I believe that team with Glenn Robinson was as deep as he ever got in the tourney.IMHO, the Painter level will work for a while. Thank you for the correction. I guess it was Keady who never made it (and now Painter).Purdue made it to the FF in the late '60s when Rick Mount was there. EDIT: Looked it up. Keady also got them to the Elite 8 in 2000, which I'd completely forgotten. Dick Bennett's #8 seed Badgers (having gone 8-8 in the BT) beat them there (oof!) to go to the FF, where Mateen Cleeves & MSU took them down. Purdue lost to UCLA in the final in '69. Lee Rose took them to the Final Four in 1980 where they lost to UCLA again (I believe that was one of the Purdue teams featuring Joe Barry Carroll.)
Wilbon and Kornheiser both thought it was a brilliant hire fwiw...I think having Matta on staff was pretty shrewd..this might work out well for IU...gotta recruitThe IU press conference was hard to watch. Painful if you are an IU fan. Something is not right in that whole ordeal.

Jo Barry Carroll, Arnette Hallman, Kieth Edmondson. Man, I hated those guys.Purdue 1980 final 4. Jo Barry Carroll
Big news coming out of Charleston:
Not a surprise at all. While the team had a bit of success during his career early on including a CIT trip in 2015 which saw them defeat Oakland before losing to Evansville in the 2nd round, it had been diminishing returns in the time since. While they did finish in the top half of the West division during the time that the OVC used that format early on in Spoonhour's tenure, they only finished in the top half of the conference once after it went back to the old format. What killed the team this season was about a 13 game stretch in January and February where they were absolutely decimated by injuries. That coupled with the fact that the team failed to live up to expectations as they were picked to finish 5th in the conference in the preseason and had several returning players meant Spoonhour wasn't gonna have long to last if he didn't produce results. EIU didn't qualify for the OVC Tournament this year either. First time in 4 years that hasn't happened.
It will be interesting to see who Tom Michael hires for this job as his predecessor went the JUCO route, getting Spoonhour from Moberly Area Community College.
We already have one suggestion out there for who should be hired as the new coach at EIU:
Don't know if Dee got a call, but Lawrenceville legend Marty Simmons (former SIUE and Evansville coach) is coming to EIU from Clemson.
I wasn't correcting you. Just had learned that about Purdue's FF appearance in the late '60s a couple years ago when I was reading about Rick Mount, and was surprised, too.Thank you for the correction. I guess it was Keady who never made it (and now Painter).

Lee Rose was at Purdue for only two seasons in the late '70s. I saw his '79-'80 FF team play as well as the '80-'81 team (which was Keady' first year.) The former had Joe Barry Carroll, a 7' center. The latter had a freshman center, Russell Cross, pretty close to 7'. Roosevelt Barnes, an excellent guard IIRC, was on both those teams, too. One of the best games I saw at Ohio State growing up was the March 1981 3OT game they won against Purdue.
I always wondered why Rose left Purdue after two seasons (he came from UNC-Charlotte, which he had taken to a FF.) Keady inherited a strong team from him.
Not sure if you saw his postgame interview on Sunday, but I about threw up hearing Sampson talking about how his mom told him "good things happen to good people" and that is why all this success is coming his way...You’d think after all the issues they had with Sampson - which they’ve arguably still never recovered from - IU would think twice before bringing a walking NCAA violation like Brown onto campus.
College basketball was absolutely brutal in Indiana during the 70s. Knight and Indiana were at their peak with 3 Final Fours and 2 Titles in 9 years. Notre Dame went to 9 Sweet 16s over a 12 year stretch. Purdue went to the FF in 69 and 80 and never had a losing record in between. And then some goofy lookin' guy named Bird took Indiana State to the Title game in 1979.Rose left Purdue after his second season to initiate a program at South Florida. It remains a bit of a mystery why it didn’t work out at Purdue. He says it just wasn’t a good fit. Clearly, his relationship with athletic director George King wasn’t good. He also was frustrated by recruiting against Bob Knight and Digger Phelps in Indiana. He wasn’t able to get Indiana’s 1980 Mr. Basketball, Jim Master, to even visit West Lafayette despite an all-out recruiting push, and lost another player to Evansville. And, he simply wasn’t all that popular or comfortable within the athletic department.
Is their a previous failed head coach that holds a higher standing than Groce for us? Weber's schtick got old, Self/Kruger left, and I feel no love lost for any of our football coaches. He genuinely seemed like a great guy, decent recruiter, but someone who didn't have the coaching chops to cut it in the majors quite yet. Not to mention a clear string of bad luck.Good for JFG. Seems like a good guy. Just got in over his head at illinois
