Why? Hiring Smith would drive a wedge between the Illini and other Chicago basketball coaches. The same issue with another AC with MIF ties. Meanstreets has more talent than MIF and Illinois doesn't get anyone from that team. Time to hire an assistant with Chicago ties, but not identified with any AAU program, such as Robinson from Ia. St. or Anderson from DePaul.

Sorry for my sarcasm on Smith. His name has been mentioned for 10+ years. I like your thought process though. Welcome to the board. Post more often.

According to 247, Daniyal Robinson’s biggest recruiting gets were THT, Terrance Lewis, Zion Griffin, and a 4 star 2021 PG out of Racine. We were in on 3 of those 4. Of the 3 we were in on, neither Griffin or Lewis panned out and both transferred. But both were good gets at the time. Guessing their lack of development is a big reason ISU cratered. Anyways, seems to have good recruiting ties in Chicagoland and Wisconsin, and seems dialed into the level of player we have typically gone after. Think we could do a lot worse!

Side note, Robinson isn’t listed as the lead recruiter for Conditt, but must have had some involvement I would guess. He also hasn’t panned out, only averaging 13MPG last year. Remember when he and Griffin went to ISU I remember it raised a lot of eyebrows why we couldn’t close on them. Always interesting to look at recruiting battles with hindsight.

Would be interested to know if any of the coaches being considered have any Caribbean connections. Absolutely love the players we have been getting from there and hope it can continue.
Underwood needs to hire Chuck Martin on the South Carolina staff.

Thank you for your comments, but I've been reading posts on here for years, I just started posting. I'm also on O&B, I like to keep up to date. I get revved up for coach searches, head or assistant.

He checks the boxes of Caribbean connections, former Calipari assistant and failed former head coach. Now he just needs a little experience with the Globetrotters and we’d have OA 2.0.

Any other alums on the list besides Frazier and Powell, i.e., Brian Randle. Also, Augustine stated he wants to start coaching. If Geoff Alexander is promoted, any discussions about who would replace him? Would Augustine be a possibility for that role? Is Augustine on Underwood's radar for a non-coaching position? This of course presupposes that Augustine could fill the role as teaching bigs.
I feel like you should maybe call Brad Underwood for these questions. Him and JW may be the only ones who know this.

Looking at his bio, seems like it could be a good fit. Although, he didn't overlap with BU at South Carolina I don't believe. Ties to Puerto Rico, the Northeast and recruited under Calapari $$$

Isn't Power 5 more of a football thing? I definitely view the Big East as a power conference...
Not when it comes to funding and the ability to pay coaches, assistant coaches, staff, etc.

Best quote I read on The Boneyard about Illinois and salaries - "If Illinois is paying ACs $1M+, we're screwed."

My guess is Cal either asked about Chin, or asked O for any names, and O simply vouched for him.

If I’m Chin this move probably makes a lot of sense. Lots of 5 star talent in the MIF pipeline and he has a lot better chance of landing those kids at UK and I’m sure he sold that connection to land the offer. You land a few McDAA’s, all of sudden you cement your status as a rock star recruiter and can probably get a better HC gig.

All of that assuming Cal sticks around UK another 2-3 years.
Good points here. The last sentence is big. What if KU has a mediocre 21/22? I believe Coach Cal is paid huge $$$$$ to get blue chip players and be a Final 4 Big Dance team... every year. I also. believe Coach Cal is contracted thru 2023? If 21/22 is so so, Coach Cal gets dumped... where is Coach OA? Coach is RC?

Used to be. I am not so sure the Big East really qualifies for that status anymore after all the realignment.
Maybe tough to argue top to bottom prominence for the modern Big East, but you've still got 2 of the past 5 nat'l championships going to Villanova. I think UConn won all of their 'ships when they were still in the AAC but they're Big East now.
