It may be that we're in on the beginning of a market correction, with a general increase in AC salaries. It may also be that we're having to pay above market to get good candidates to consider UI. Strange things are happening, given the recent resurgence of our program. It's been reported that Gentry'g gone, which would be all three ACs. It's been reported that Antigua took less than we offered to move to Kentucky. It's been reported that a number of candidates passed on the job, despite our DIA's apparent generosity. With our recent success and an AD throwing around money like a drunken sailor, it should be easy to retain and hire people. But we've retained no one, and hiring is proving a lot harder than one would expect.
This may explain what the hold up is. It has been a strange offseason.

There's plenty of 4 stars to go around! They'd be chasing the fringe 5 stars. And at the point like most, there's the development aspect. Where the coaches earn their pay checks. Playing field should even out more in my opinion. Similar to this year. Wasn't many clear cut better teams that distanced themselves other than Gonzaga and Baylor! Fichigan was a use covid to hide so I don't have to play the best teams in the conference squad! So blah to them.

The thing about 4 stars is that they are way less sure things than 5 stars (e.g. Tevian Jones and Andres Curbelo). I think it will be an equalizing factor and put a premium on talent evaluation. In other words, if the Blue Bloods stop getting the 5 star sure things and can't just cherry-pick, they will actually have to work harder to identify the 4 starts that will succeed in college ball.

Bingo. Parity will be the word to dominate the college basketball landscape once more.

It's important to remember we're at the end of the grapevine and not the center of the whole truth.

As far as I've seen, these "reports" that Antigua took less than we offered are all speculation. Even if reporters were saying it, it's not like anyone on the in is telling them exact figures so all they can do is guess. Antigua is getting paid $850k (Source). Even if it's true we offered him more, I'd imagine we may have offered say $900k, which is a minuscule difference. If he really wanted to go to UK, it probably wasn't enough to keep him.

Also, it's been reported that a number of candidates passed on the job? I'd love to see the sources behind that. And even if they had some legitimacy to it, we're trying to poach coaches from top-tier programs that can financially compete. Not to mention the interests Brad said he's received in the position. I doubt it's as simple as, "many candidates passed on the job".

I didn’t think it was as much as the kids were beholden to Chin but rather kids are beholden to MIF leadership, who have strong relationship with Chin. As long as that relationship is strong, MIF will keep directing kids to school Chin is at. That school now being Kentucky and its obvious pull means gonna be tough to get in the way of top MIF players choosing KY.
I agree with you but feel like we are likely to almost always lose that battle anyway. I hope we can still have a shot at the 50-100 kids.

If we get CY I think we will be very happy regardless of whether he was the first we reached out to or not.

What happened to all the CY rumors though? Did they die down?

Plus, side deals (with boosters) and perks are not reported. We don't know the full picture.

So many weird things happening this off-season. I'm half-expecting Guerrier to transfer to Oregon, and for Mennenga to encourage him to stay there after Mennenga accepts an AC job at Illinois a week later.

Entirely possible that Mennenga wanted to wait and see what the final staff would be, and/or our first offer wasn't spicy enough, and now we've come back with Chester and Alexander or Cy in place...with a spicier offer...and he has something more to consider now.

Most G-League teams function as more of a minor league for the NBA. They can dip into that pool of players if there is an injury. The vast majority of players are guys who are trying to get back to the NBA or guys who never quite made it. Most people you see in the NBA who get a “10 day” contract are G-League players. There is at least one team, “Ignite”…possibly a second that is allowed to sign high school prospects. Those players are not, however, allowed to be added to a NBA roster. The advantages are, top notch competition against seasoned players, a six figure salary, no class, & lots of visibility for NBA scouts.
ah, it's like a Triple A baseball team, then. thanks.

You're right that all of the info we read about the AC situation is speculative. It's equally possible that Gentry is staying (seems credible), Kentucky flat-out outbid us for Antigua and Coleman (seems very likely), and Whitman hasn't been trying to hire for the second AC position (seems very unlikely).

I will end this drawn out search. I will take the job for a starting salary of $200,000/year. My qualifications? At a Holiday Tournament many moons ago at Danville CC I saw a game between Chicago King and Danville HS. After the game I predicted that a clumsy and uncoordinated Keon Clark would make it to the NBA and highly recruited Rashard Griffith and Thomas Hamilton would not. I can start tomorrow.
