if an Illinois coach had that record after 7 years he literally would have been the best Illinois coach of all time.

Now compare to Nebby over the same period. They're the ones who should hire Chryst, now.

No, frankly. I'm unavoidably biased but no.

I've seen Bronco Mendenhall's name get mentioned. I would hire Tom Herman personally.

The uncertainty of what conference they're playing in definitely hurts them. How do you know what staff to build if you don't know if you're going to be in a California-centered league or a Texas-centered league?

(I'm like 92.4% sure the Pac 12 stays together, but the schools are extremely jumpy and panicky and vulnerable to making an irrational decision right now)
There were some major behind the scenes issues with Hermann at Texas. Idk if he’s proven enough to offset those concerns. I have a friend who Hermann hired and he would just constantly refer to him as an overgrown frat boy.

A lot of similar stuff has been whispered about Bielema over the years, for whatever that's worth.

In his case I think a 38 year old millionaire bachelor whose career has been a rocket ship straight upward is naturally someone with different desires and appetites in his life than a 52-year old married father of two who's been fired and spent some time in a sojourn in the NFL. He's still an "everything all of the time" guy, it's just that "everything" is different now.

That's as to the frat boy part. Overgrown on the other hand....

The difference is BB had the consistent, high level success while doing what he was doing. Hermann was good at Houston but not good at UT.

Eh, Herman has had a winning season every year both overall and in conference, is 5-0 in bowl games, had a 10+ win season at both of his stops, and was an outstanding OC at programs big and small before that. And Texas, the special couple of quarterbacks they're soon to have notwithstanding, is no better off without him.

When Houston beat Oklahoma in the first game of his second year there, the Herman hype train got totally out of control in a way he wasn't ultimately able to live up to, but he's been really successful and is one of the best offensive minds out there. He'll be back.

I see some buzz for him at Arizona State, that seems like it might be a good fit.

Tom Herman
OC at Ohio State for Urban Meyer national champs. When you have that much talent it is hard not to look good.
2 very good seasons at Houston 13-1 (beat P5 schools Louisville, Vanderbuilt and Florida State) and 9-3 (P5 wins Oklahoma and Louisville).
Was mediocre at Texas 7-6,10-4, 8-5, and 7-3. Avg 8 wins per season. Mack Brown was at Texas for 16 years and averaged 9.8 wins per season.
Did 1 year with Bears as special assistant to Matt Nagy. Did not set the world on fire.
He has coached in state of Texas since 2004 (excluding 3 years in Columbus) so he could probably recruit there for Nebraska. Grew up and attended college in SoCal.

Bill O'Brien did OK at Penn State 8-4, 7-5 under difficult circumstances. Made playoffs 4 out of 6 years at Houston Texans. Not sure he wants to go back to college coaching.

Texas A&M could be looking for a new coach at the end of the season. That might be more attractive to O'Brien.

If Wisconsin continues to nosedive this season (short term), or if 67 year old Ferenz of Iowa ever decides to retire (longer term), I would think they would at least consider offering the HC job to Coach B. He left Wisconsin with a great record and a solid support base, and played for and coached at Iowa. Wisconsin would not let any ill feelings they hold about Coach B's sudden departure deter them from trying to lure him back to restore the luster to their program, and you always have warm feelings about the team you played for and that gave you your start in coaching (Iowa). I trust our AD is doing everything possible to ensure a long and happy stay for Coach B at Illinois. After several decades, we finally have a great man and outstanding coach leading our football program.

What!??? Are you crazy? I sincerely hope Coach B isn’t planning on going anywhere. Who cares who coaches Wisconsin or Iowa, they are our rivals. I hope Coach B brings football success to ILLINOIS! And ILLINOIS only!

Barring a falling out between BB and the DIA, it'll come down to this: What does Coach B want to do?

Does he want his kids to go to the same school and have the same friends? If he's smart with his money, BB will have generational wealth to leave to his children - be it $5 million/year at Illinois or $12 million/year at Texas.

If he's 60 and the Jaguars, Raiders or Browns come calling and offer 5-years $80 million, does he want a bite at the pro apple and ride off into the sunset on a pile of more money than he can ever count?

Does he make Illinois a consistent 8-game/once in awhile 10-game winner, but gets tired to the fans harping on him to win National Championships?

It is highly doubtful Nebraska or Wisconsin will try to poach a conference head coach. That will lead to conference coaching cannibalism.

In the end, BB and his wife will have those conversations, none of us will be privy to them, and JW will make sure BB is happy and content at UI, or consult his bus list.

I really believe the odds of BB going back to Wisconsin, or to Iowa, are so small I would not lose one millisecond of sleep over it. I dont think he leaves us for any other conference blueblood school either

Now, if we became awesome for awhile, would he ever leave for a blueblood out of conference, if they came calling ? maybe, but I think because he flamed out in the SEC once, he has lost that desire to do that again.

losing a HC or any other coach due to us being so good they are in demand should not worry anyone. Embrace that notion.

Definitely will need to get over those frat boy tendencies if he goes to ASU haha.

I love coach B and everything he has done since he set foot on campus.. that being said, we need him to win 8 or more games first before we have this conversation or worry about anyone poaching him. Put me in the camp of welcoming the Coach Underwood to K-State talk last year :hailtotheorange:
