I am sure the pressure to win was crazy.

Add in Covid-19 seasons, the transfer portal, NIL$ and Chryst said to himself its not fun anymore. I have plenty of money. If I want to keep coaching I can go be an offensive coordinator at another P5 school and make $1M-$2M a year and not have deal with this.

Maybe do some ESPN commentary for a year.

I was thrilled at Lovie being hired, and unhappy about the BB hire, so I'm not expecting to be picked up as an AD anytime soon. But as other posters have said, Josh salvaged a death spiral with the Lovie hire, and ultimately he left the program better than he found it. The wins didn't improve, but the program improved, and it gave Josh time to think ahead.

The two best moves Josh has made as AD, in my opinion, were hiring Lovie when he did, and firing Lovie when he did. If Freeman, LL and BB were Josh's short list, then we were going to be in good hands. But BB is like winning the lottery, because he appears to be doing what I thought Lovie was going to: prove that his way of running a football program is a recipe for winning, and stability. BB takes the whole FamILLy thing seriously, because he daoesn't want his daughters to move six more times before they reach high school. BB learned from Alvarez and Belichick what the real coaching opportunity is; to settle down somewhere and build something lasting. He wants a staff willing to grow roots, locally, work with people they enjoy, and do their passion year after year. Like a real job.

BB is going to be the Illini's Alvarez. And DC Walters sees that, and might want another year of stability before rushing off to whatever 'not ideal' situation he'll be offered in the meantime. Low turnover among assistants should indicate that what happens on the field and in recruiting, is sustainable. I like it.
I really hope you are correct on all counts.

Strange things happen in college sports but Leipold is only in his second year at Kansas. I think he would do better for himself having a few good seasons and then taking a better job than Wisconsin. I don’t think it would be a good look for him to jump ship that quickly.

As to Walters Colorado has not been good for a long while and they could be left in the dust during realignment. Would you hire a young guy with zero head coaching experience at this point? I think Rick George wants and needs his own version of Bielema - someone with a proven track record.
So maybe Paul Chryst?

Josh Whitman, Lovie Smith, and the Big Ten TV money collaborated to do more to modernize and expand the organizational and physical infrastructure of Illinois football within five years than Guenther, Thomas, Turner, Zook, Beckman et al had done in 25.
The craziest part of that is how Zook made the comments on how they had to update facilities and equipment when he arrived. So you might have to 30-35 years...Oof

...as in recruits, not opponents
At the risk of opening up an entire can of worms, I will just say that it's been refreshing to feel like we're actually scouting our opponents and formulating an effective game plan against them. For years it felt like we were just telling everyone, "this is what we're doing and we don't think you can stop it" and then hoping for the best (and every time they stopped it, we would lose, sometimes badly).

There is no excuse to not study for the test. Yes, you can make some adjustments on the fly, but you shouldn't be trying to learn things on the fly that you could have learned from simply watching some film beforehand. When you're good enough, you might be able to roll out of bed and nail the exam with minimal preparation. But when you're bad, you don't have that luxury.

Calling Illinois instate Wiscy commits seems more probable. The 3 linemen they have should like what both lines did to Wiscy this weekend.

Is there also a possibility that it was in his contract if he takes another job that it offsets his buyout?
and your theory is Wiscy waived that for a lower buyout ? it’s possible that’s the deal

something just doesn’t make sense otherwise - why agree to a reduction in a contract agreed to just last year ?

there is more to that story

why leave 9 million, or even 1 million, on the table ? especially as it was just agreed to last year

and had I given money to the UW Foundation, supposedly for academic purposes , I would be very upset
What’s his buyout at the end of the year if he stayed?

Maybe it was a matter of - you’re getting fired at the end of the year regardless. You can take that buyout money now, and maybe some extra for the money you’d make the next few months. Or just be a lame duck coach which is not good for anybody.

Just speculating, but if I were the AD, That’s a way I’d consider playing it

I think he is wanting a lump sum instead of an installment plan
time value of money deals vs lump sum are always options . it’s hard for me to imagine the high interest rate used to get a 20 million dollar figure reduced to 11 million in a standard buyout contract .

This is what I figured was the deal at Nebraska. But it wasn't.

I will say that if Chryst doesn't have to give up any with another job this could be a smart move. I think he's still got a future.

ok, and this is an honest question. has this board ever been this out of touch with reality?
of course not no GIF

It’s actually kind of an interesting question. I don’t think the question is whether this board was delusional enough to think we could hire Saban (or, even try to bring Christ out of retirement for another gig), but to account for the different places a program like Wisconsin is versus ours. Maybe the right analogy is was this board delusional enough to think we could hire away any other currently moderately successful P5 coach To come to rebuild Illinois. I honestly can’t remember any examples being considered seriously.

I think he wasn’t interested in the whole lame duck thing — bad for him, the ACs and players. He’s a Wisky guy — believe he grew up in Madison, played for Badgers and coached there as AC and HC for a good long time. I’m guessing he’ll live in Madison for rest of his life — even if takes another job elsewhere he’ll likely return there to retire. Believe it or not, not everyone is motivated by grabbing the most money possible, especially when still getting a nice payout and could be other financial/business considerations not disclosed. Not really much different than an athlete giving his current team a hometown discount when a free agent.
