now Mississippi St needs a head coach

do they reach out to Gary Patterson or dare I say they try to get Mullen back ?
Oh my god that wouldn't *quite* be Bobby Petrino's return to Louisville but it would be pretty close.

The first thing they have to decide is whether they want to keep playing Air Raid or not.

Interesting "ties" to Illini football you have! I was a huge fan of Blackman in grade school. Loved his Sunday morning TV Show recapping the prior day's game. (I got most of the live games on radio only, so it was always nice to see video highlights the day after.)

In fact, Blackman was one of the huge reasons I attended Illinois. He had a great TV persona........sorta like Santa Claus' first born son.
interesting. He certainly had the proverbial "old school" approach to football. Coached from a tower with a loudspeaker as an example. However Blackman overcame Polio and had pretty good success everywhere he went (some of his Illini teams were like the 2022, so close). Dartmouth named one of their fields or facilities after him. But ya, grew up an Illini fan and have the pleasure to meet some prominent past sports figures of the orange and blue. A guy named Dave Adolph, who was the linebacker coach at Illinois when my dad played, was the DC at my I-AA school when i played... dave didnt remember, but in his defense tried to act like he did.

LINEBACKERS: Scott Studwell, John Sullivan era........impressive! And Dave had a marvelous career, indeed.

The overall timing right now, with the AD gone, and NLI signing a week away and transfer portal stuff, of Leach's passuing, could not have come at a worse time for M State. Perfect storm.

I know Patterson isn't an Air Raid guy, but I still dont know why he seemingly is off the board for them . Limiting yourself to Air Raid disciples willing to go to MState tight now, really limits the search

What a bizarre job for him. It can't be an easy road back to relevance there.
Yeah, my initial thought was Colorado "should be better than they are," but ... it's not an easy place to win. This is NOT a situation like Illinois, where you are the sole flagship state school with any relevant D1 sports (NU is the epitome of niche-appeal-private) in an absolutely massive state (rich with talent and incredibly passionate sports fans ready to back a winner) and getting regular exposure in one massive media market (Chicago) and another very large one (St. Louis) and you just have not found the right leadership ... oh yeah, and Big Ten TV money flowing in, larger and larger each couple of years, along with a brand new, state-of-the-art practice facility.

Colorado is a mid-sized state that actually does not produce as much talent as I might have thought, and the states around it produce next to none. Besides the Broncos (which draw fans from surrounding states in a way CU never could), Colorado sports fans are known for being apathetic and fickle. If you thought Chicago was full of transplants that diluted the "home town" effect the Illini might have, go to Denver ... like 60% of its residents are not from there, and they bring their sports allegiances with them. Additionally, I would argue CSU and Air Force eat into potential CU fans in a way that SIU and NIU and Bradley simply do not in Illinois (CU/CSU is a literal annual rivalry, after all). Add on top of that the Pac-12 falling further and further behind, and it's not even close to a "sleeping giant." What CU does have going for it is an amazing college town and absolutely beautiful surrounding area, but how many football players are thinking about that? Elite recruiting classes have been going to College Station, TX and Tuscaloosa, AL for years now.

We know how hard it is to turn around Illini Football, and we actually have a lot going for us on paper ... Coach Prime has his work cut out for him, and I will be watching intently!

Everyone else in the conference is trying to do the same thing, bound to be a loser even if it's done well. If they stick with Air Raid they could get players or maximize talent of the players they get in a way that's different than other SEC teams. Zig when others zag kind of thing.

I wonder if they've talked with Hal Mumme.

Something happened to Dan Mullen at Florida. He had a bizzare habit of not playing his best players, and started openly talking about how much he disliked recruiting. He has the track record and he's only 50 years old, but I'm not sure he wants to be an SEC head coach anymore.

I think Colorado has recognized what you're saying is true, and has therefore decided to play a completely different game. I think hiring Coach Prime tells us they can't compete with the top dollar jobs and blue blood destinations, so they're going the marketing and showmanship route instead.

They are taking the WWE approach to entertainment; more flash, more drama, more made for tv moments. Everybody who loves reality shows and lucha libre and news screens with graphics and crawls and info boxes and BREAKING NEWS are going to eat this up like soup. Coach Prime knows what you like, and he's going to feed it to you.

Full disclosure; I don't own a tv, which is why I'm not saying "we". I'd watch. But that's because I think he is also a good football coach and is going to win a lot of games. I mean let's get serious; how many of us thought he could assemble the well credentialed staff that he has? The fact is, people take his calls. The man is not afraid of success, that's for darn sure. I wish him success.

@Indy Illini Fan Should we be watching for more Harbaugh-Colts news in the next few days??

From everything I hear … It’ll be Colts or Broncos … Harbaugh is ready, thinks he’s done all he can do at Michigan but won’t leave for just any NFL job … Also a thought to waiting one more year since the situation will be so good at Michigan next year but everyone I talk to says he’s expected to move on …

Irsay will lose his mind if he goes to Broncos … I know Irsay has been using the jet quite a bit … Dallas, Ann Arbor, San Francisco …

While I understand Harbaugh has unfinished business in the NFL, he also has unfinished business at UM. Also, the Broncos are a dumpster fire. The Vikings made more sense to take last year than the Broncos.

All that said, Harbaugh has a history of not sticking around long.

I thought he'd say at UM, he might prove me wrong.

College football is a much different environment now. Michigan's natural advantages are diminished with the portal. Don't know how this factors in but I can see lots of college coaches getting out when the opportunity arises.

So, any timelines for next staff hires? After NFL season/playoffs?
