Yeah, my initial thought was Colorado "should be better than they are," but ... it's not an easy place to win. This is NOT a situation like Illinois, where you are the sole flagship state school with any relevant D1 sports (NU is the epitome of niche-appeal-private) in an absolutely massive state (rich with talent and incredibly passionate sports fans ready to back a winner) and getting regular exposure in one massive media market (Chicago) and another very large one (St. Louis) and you just have not found the right leadership ... oh yeah, and Big Ten TV money flowing in, larger and larger each couple of years, along with a brand new, state-of-the-art practice facility.
Colorado is a mid-sized state that actually does not produce as much talent as I might have thought, and the states around it produce next to none. Besides the Broncos (which draw fans from surrounding states in a way CU never could), Colorado sports fans are known for being apathetic and fickle. If you thought Chicago was full of transplants that diluted the "home town" effect the Illini might have, go to Denver ... like 60% of its residents are not from there, and they bring their sports allegiances with them. Additionally, I would argue CSU and Air Force eat into potential CU fans in a way that SIU and NIU and Bradley simply do not in Illinois (CU/CSU is a literal annual rivalry, after all). Add on top of that the Pac-12 falling further and further behind, and it's not even close to a "sleeping giant." What CU does have going for it is an amazing college town and absolutely beautiful surrounding area, but how many football players are thinking about that? Elite recruiting classes have been going to College Station, TX and Tuscaloosa, AL for years now.
We know how hard it is to turn around Illini Football, and we actually have a lot going for us on paper ... Coach Prime has his work cut out for him, and I will be watching intently!
