This would surprise me. Purdue's identity is their offense (cradle of quarterbacks and all) and I don't believe they've had a defensive head coach since Leon Burtnett in the 80s.
I would be so very shocked for them to take a chance on a young , up & coming DC from within the conference.
It speaks well for Walters tho, that hes making it onto peoples lists.

Brohm - HC W Kentucky
Hazel - HC Kent State
Hope - HC E Kentucky
Tiller - HC Wyoming
Coletto - OC Ohio State
Akers - HC TX
Young - HC AZ

Purdue like Illinois has typically hired head coaches. The one exception at Purdue was Coletto.

Illinois only non head coach hire as Gary Moeller DC at Michigan (not counting Tepper or Cubitt as they were promoted internally.

He interviewed very well from what I heard … Purdue people extremely impressed.
Im not at all surprised about that , but I will still be surprised if they hire him.

Often times, an OC or DC needs to get experience in this HC hiring process , for one cycle or two , before he really gets serious consideration. I realize he was seriously considered and was likely Plan B for Colorado, but there was an existing connection there.
His only connection to Purdue is they are conference rivals

If he doesnt get snapped up in this carousel season , he will likely next year if our D is anywhere close to as good as it was this year.

I'd be surprised Purdue would pass on big name, experienced head coaches over an assistant. Having an interview for a HC position, whilst you are an assistant, with No HC experience....well....."...that's one small step for man...one giant leap for mankind"

Josh' recent hires are doing very well

Football 5-7, 8-4 (every loss was close). Assistants are wanted by others.
M Basketball #1 seed, BT champions, Assistants stolen by KY and Gonzaga, reloaded 3 new hires with recruiting getting even stronger
W Basketball, new hire Green is 9-2. Predecessor avg was 8-20 with high of 11 wins. Instant results

I will be surprised if Walters is the next Purdue coach. For a Big Ten program that just won the West and went to the Big Title game to take a chance on him would be rather out there.

Walters is doing a great job as a DC but has zero HC experience and importantly is very young - lacking the connections to build a great staff. I’d say it’s a third or fourth option for them.

It doesn’t seem like the best fit for him. Especially with their NIL stance up to this point. Really puts a new staff behind the 8 ball.

Walters is gonna get the Purdue job, ensure he loses to BB every year, and makes sure he does his best to beat teams so Illinois wins the west. (Or whatever divisions look like in the future)

Once Purdue figures out he’s a double agent and fires him, he comes back home and is the DC for our Natty team.

BB and Walters playing 4-D chess right now.

Lmao, this was a great read. Really though, I expect Bielema would want Walters to coach his rear off and challenge him in every possible way.

Interesting "ties" to Illini football you have! I was a huge fan of Blackman in grade school. Loved his Sunday morning TV Show recapping the prior day's game. (I got most of the live games on radio only, so it was always nice to see video highlights the day after.)

In fact, Blackman was one of the huge reasons I attended Illinois. He had a great TV persona........sorta like Santa Claus' first born son.
Met him my senior year (1974) in Shoemachers (buying an interview suit). Introduced myself and said I was a lifelong Illini fan. He engaged me conversation for 3-4 minutes. Wished me luck. Very gracious. A real gentleman.

Wouldn't surprise me if Bielema gave an interview recommendation to Purdue. Not because he wants to lose him. Rather, as a way to support his assistants as they wind their way up the coaching food chain. Understands that Walters is not likely to get the job but understands that good interviewing takes practice. Will only help him in the future. Bielema seems like that kind of guy.

AIthough I do expect Purdue to hire an offensive-minded coach............

In the event it does happen in West Lafayette, Jim Leonhard might just be next in line for the orange and blue. (And I wonder which Assistant Coaches Walters may try to take with him?)
