Do you also think it would be a bad move for Stanford (or another poorly performing Pac12 school) to not hire Walters because Colorado passed on him?
that’s a totally different situation . not analogous at all .

Leonhard was the heir apparent . Wiscy gave him a 8 week tryout and came to the conclusion that thru could do better . In other words , they kicked the tires and concluded Leonhard isn’t ready yet . Hey , maybe they are wrong .

But For a conference rival to then hire him as HC ?
awkward imo .

Purdue is a basketball school (so is Louisville). They have been to Rose Bowl twice - 1966 and 2000.
Since 1973 they have only had 3 coaches with plus .500 records. Brohm was as good as they can expect.
I don't see Purdue breaking the bank like Nebraska (Ruhle $67m guaranteed) Wisconsin (Fickell $55m guaranteed).

Purdue website had Syracuse HC 7-5 (36-48 6 years) , Wyoming HC 7-5 (52-55 9 years , Air Force HC 9-3 (120-78 16 years) as candidates
Thank goodness we got Bret

so you think it would be less controversial to hire a coach with zero head coaching experience? it's not perfectly analogous, but it's pretty close, imo.

I'll put it another way, if we were in the same situation pre-Bielema, I'd be just fine with Leonard. The heir apparent to a program like Wiscy getting passed over for a coach that took an AAC team to the playoff and has deep midwest ties would be fine with me.

Brohm has really had our number, so him leaving is really good for Illinois, especially if Purdue falls back to the basement.

Brohm is a Louisville man through and through, born and raised there, went to high school there, played there collegiately, returned there after his playing days and spent 6 more years there, even after a few other stints (including here) he spent 4 years at Western Kentucky which is less than a 2 hour drive from Louisville before he took the Purdue job.

While he turned them down the last time, I guess he felt like it's time to head back home. I'm less inclined to believe it has anything to do with any turmoil or NIL or things like that.

I don't think Leonhard would be a bad choice, and I don't think it would have been a bad choice for Wisconsin to keep him, I think Wisconsin was just able to land a big fish and took the opportunity, which speaks more to Fickell being an established successful head coach over a multi-year period than it is an indictment on Leonhard.

Fleck extended and raised to $6M/year for a .500 record in the B10. Was there really anyone coming after PJ at this point in time??

I am really interested to see how Deon does in CO. I think he is making a big mistake running off current CO players.

Its one thing to win at Jackson State with a few 5 star athletes when your competition has 2 stars or lower.

I cant find Pac12 2023 schedule but in 2022 they played 9 bowl teams

1 BCS team TCU
6 PAC 12 bowl teams Oregon, USC, Washington, UCLA, Oregon State, Utah
1 B10 bowl team MN
1 Mountain West Air Force Bowl team

Didn't Colorado go 1-11? What level of talent is he really running off?

Amazing. It will be interesting what Josh is able to do for BB. Somewhat nervous about that at the moment as BB seems severely underpaid compared to B10 peers.
I’m sure Whitman will make him a competitive offer, but the escalation of coaching salaries is pretty incredible. Plus it comes at a time when donors are being asked to step up with significant amounts of money for NIL deals. I honestly thought that would leave a somewhat smaller pot for the coaches, not that they’re hurting. Lol. The increase in TV revenue will be spent long before it’s received.

All of this makes me wonder whether the money train will ever end (or even slow down).

Well, at this point in time (actually two years ago) BB got the opportunity to go back home, and he took it.

Colorado's 3 non-con games are a road game at TCU and home games against Nebraska and Colorado State. Their Pac-12 home games are against Arizona, Oregon State, Stanford and USC. Their Pac-12 road games are at Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA, Utah, and Washington State.

Whether or not he could have taken Purdue to the next level, he was still a roadblock for us to jump to our ultimate desired position in the B1G pecking order. I have to feel Bielema has us in a position to leap them in the short term while they go through this transition. Idk, maybe they will strike gold with this hire, but I think it's probably more likely that this hire does no better than Brohm, with a fair shot he won't be as good as Brohm. Therefore, I am happy with this news.
Brohm recruited guys that fit his style of play. They may, and most likely won't be a good fit for the next coach. I expect a minimum one year setback.

And that is for the ones that are still there and don't portal down to Louisville or elsewhere.

Thankfully for our sake, Whitman is all in on making our football program respectable and is very hands on in what goes on behind the scenes with donors. You can just see the passion this man has in all of his interviews and support from the sidelines (he put his body on the line while he played here after all). Not to mention, BB has already got a taste of the SEC and I highly doubt he'd be up for an NFL head coaching job. He's from Illinois, knows the lay of the land and his kids are really young. I really like where we are at right now and have full confidence Whitman continuing to improve our football program and keep BB & his coaching staff happy by providing them with what they need.
