It's both.I can't be the only person who thinks a Big Ten school isn't where an OC or DC should "learn on the job"? Save that crap for the sun belt. This it's supposed to be big boy football not "let's give my buddy or my son a chance here".
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this is 100% on talent and lack of depth (which is also the responsibility of the coaches to address) and not scheme. But every single team loses players to the draft, graduation, and transfers. They alone can't explain how terrible we were on defense, primarily at the end of halfs and games (which I would argue is mostly scheme based).
We don't have the talent to compete with the top teams in the Big Ten, but great coaching can make up for that.
I'm willing to still believe that Bielema is a great head coach, but I didn't think Lunney was any good last year, and this year has only confirmed that. I don't think Henry was bad, but he certainly wasn't good, and when I see Jim Leonhard sitting in the coaching room, I'm asking why the heck is he not the DC?
When you don't have a talent advantage, and you don't have a coaching advantage, what do you have?
Lunney must be fired, Henry must be downgraded to Co-DC (at best). If he doesn't like that and wants to leave, well bye.
Then we need to find some large men on both sides of the line that can play.
