From everything I have heard ... Cal is clearly the top target ...

Outside of him, Brad is in their top 3 choices ... And I don't think one of those in that group of 3 even wants the job ...

Chester is my guy ... But even he knows he has a 0% shot at getting the HC job at Illinois right now ...
Can't help but not like the guy. wish Josh could help get him a HC job at UIC or some college to get prepared for the next step.

I think there are some people legitimately hoping Brad leaves. I don't know who they think we'd get to replace him, but the extreme wing of the "Brad yells" caucus would not be upset to see him go.

That whole crowd would love to see Josh's list he keeps if anything were to happen ...

Big surprise ... They yell just as much and in some cases more ... :ROFLMAO:

Sounds like BU might be more highly thought of by ADs than by many Illini fans.
For the record, all coaches have flaws and the purpose of a message board like this is to discuss them. I’m one of those people, and it doesn’t mean I‘m advocating a coaching change.

Bill Self failed to advance to 2nd weekend of tourney 7 of 18 seasons at Kansas every season being a top 4 seed with regional protection. You could do this exercise for every single coach.

Bill Self also has a couple of national championships ... Four final 4s ... 16 of his years at Kansas they have won the league ... 9 years they have won the Big 12 tourney ... His career record is 579-129 ... That's right around 82% ... And at Allen, he's 292-16 which is around 95% ...

Talking about one of the elite coaches to ever do it ... The tournament is more about the draw than anything else ... But what Self has done in terms of a career stacks up as one of the best of all time ... Pretty tough to point out many flaws with him ... But maybe that's just me ...

I love Brad but thinking Texas would be wanting a 60 year old who hasn't made it past the round of 32 is completely insane to me.

It just doesn't make sense. They can get whoever they want how would that be the route? Might be just me hoping he stays FWIW.

Josh gave BU the ultimate vote of confidence last March when he gave him an extension that made Underwood the 8th highest paid coach in the country and 2nd highest in BIG (next to Izzo). This year has been a disappointment for many fans but in no means is it a cause for concern.

What I've noticed is that there is a strong correlation between consistently dominating your conference and winning in March. Below are the conference records of select coaches at only their power conference schools, excluding the first season at a school if it was bad to account for taking over a bad program.
These are the 16 "modern" coaches with 3 or more Final Four appearances, 4 recent successful Big Ten coaches, and Brad Underwood.

The best coaches all win in their conference a lot, rarely have a down year, and two down years in a row in their prime is almost unheard of.

By this metric, if you grouped coaches based on this WIN % it may not be perfect, but I think it comes out mostly fair:
>70% = Elite
65-70% = Great
60-65% = Good
55-60% = Above Average
50-55% = Average

*Note that Brad is 4th of 14 current Big Ten coaches using this criteria.

^ I almost cannot judge Brad too much for 2018 or 2019 … we hired him to get us out of a canyon and onto a mountain peak, and I absolutely consider that. The last four seasons, even taking this one into the total, he’s been fantastic in the Big Ten.

I know, I know - the other guys have to have their whole tenure in there. And eventually there will be a big enough sample size at Illinois where I think it’s fair to include Brad’s whole numbers for my personal judging (maybe after next year or the year after?). The point is, our conference record over the last four seasons really does seem to suggest we should have a Sweet Sixteen … maybe we would have in 2020 without COVID. :(

They want Cal ... They have made that clear ...

The other candidates that I have heard about:

1. Jerome Tang ... Has told multiple people and members of his staff that he isn't interested in Texas ... Focused on K State
2. Eric Musselman ... Would be very interested and his buyout is very low (which is a factor because they're gonna owe Beard some $$), also has SEC experience which is a factor
3. Brad

Sean Miller could be a name but I've been told he isn't Del Conte biggest fan due to some things he has been told by AZ people and doesn't want to compete with football $$ or be in the SEC ...

We all know what's going on with Oats ... He got that extension and schools are steering clear now with all that is going on ...

I see Self all the time, always just shake my head at him. He reminds me that you always take the blue blood job. He is right, but I still shake my head. We were lucky to have him. Wish Roy would have just waited a few more years before bolting home.

They went younger with Shaka and look what happened there.
Beard is 50. Not ancient, but not exactly a spring 🐓 chicken…and then we all know how that tuned out. It’s a crapshoot.

I don't like his hair...piece.

Beaten to the punch line...but it deserves more than one mention. Wonder if he goes to Shatner's guy?

Yeah but he rarely wins at 11 o’clock in the morning. Also, he yells and it really scares me. ;)
You forgot guys having career games.

Actually, the opponent player career games and early start (6 PM / 11 AM) poor performances is an Illini thing that predates BU.
