And Notre Dame isn't a train wreck currently? Penn St. wasn't a train wreck before he came? It's about the coach, not the program. DePaul could get back on the right track if it had the right leadership

If you polled every coach in the country … I can count on one hand the coaches who would take Depaul over ND or PSU …

DePaul is the worst job in the Big East and it’s not even close …

DePaul has no one to blame but themselves … Dennis Gates wanted that job BAD and they passed on him …

disagree. It would seriously take a miracle by a Sister Jean type at DePaul for them to regain relevance.
The days of slipping a west side or south side hotshot $10,000 a year to play at Halsted & Fullerton for 3 years are long gone.
I also just think the ceiling of these basketball-only schools that are located in talent-rich cities is kind of overrated. You can obviously find the examples that have had the stars align (e.g., Villanova or Georgetown), but I just generally think these schools have a disadvantage for gaining influence/recognition among elite recruits. Go walk around Lincoln Park and count how many Illini shirts you see compared to DePaul ones. See what the crowd looks like when Syracuse plays St. John's at MSG. My sister went to Butler and lived in Indianapolis; she said IU fans outnumber Butler fans by at least 10:1.

Sometimes the physical location of the school is not as important as the number of fans it has there, as recruits from the area will likely show way more subconscious favoritism toward the "sentimental home team" compared to the school who happens to be close. And "average Joe" fans (not mean to be offensive, as I am one!) will gravitate toward the "University of [State]" sports teams way more than expensive, small private schools nine times out of ten.

I don’t even know if FDUs coach would take it and he makes like 22k a year. I’m kidding….kind of

Not trying to say your sources are wrong … But I can tell you with 100% certainty that a coach is interviewing for Texas this afternoon …

DePaul hasn't made the NCAA Tournament since 2004, they haven't even made the NIT since 2007. They may legitimately be the least desirable Power Conference job in the country at the moment. Some day they may get lucky with transfers to have a good season again, but it's been really really long now.

not only has Depaul been terrible, they haven't had any notable players or coaches in a long time. Pretty much any other high major program you can at least name one notable player in the last 10-15 years.

If the Boys to Men Academy would have worked out, DePaul would have been on easy street. Sadly it was not to be and it went the way of Donda Prep.

Yeah the coaching decisions have been almost unimaginably bad there.

It's amazing how long it's been since that program has even shown a pulse. And they harbor this stupid fantasy that some miracle in-city recruit is going to rescue them, which is as outdated as it is unrealistic.

I wish they hadn't. I hate seeing good coaches at Mizzou.

Chances Shrews is back at Penn State?
He might lose 8 of his best players to graduation this year. He is going to have a lot of work to do to get PSU back in the conversation going forward if he doesn't jump ship this year. Similar for Collins at NW. If either one of those guys want a new job, this would seem to be the year or they may be waiting awhile to be in the spotlight again.

Northwestern is not in a terrible spot. They will bring back Berry, Barnhizer, and Nicholson. That's not a terrible core and I'm sure they are an attractive spot for some transfers.

Penn State on the other hand pretty much is only returning Kanye Clary (their speedy guard that kept blowing by our defenders) and their freshman big guy. They will have a lot of work to do.

My sources are on the coach side of the equation. All I'll say is that strong assurances have been made... and it'll get the alumni riled up if they pivot. I could see him still swinging for the fences though

I’m surprised I don’t hear Bobby Hurley’s name thrown around for more jobs. Been at ASU for 8 years and has been pretty good. I think he was at Buffalo before and had them playing well. I don’t think ASU is his ceiling.

does anyone have any lasting memory of Strus AT Depaul though? that's kinda what I was getting at

Oh I do, but I watch a lot of college ball outside of the B10. Fully agree that DePaul is a terrible job overall.

There really isn't an excuse for them. Tony Stubblefield should be able to snag every mid-major caliber player out of Chicago and get them competitive in the Big East.
