For all the concern over the starting pitching - not that it was unwarranted, especially after Stroman got hurt - it really looks like it’s the relief pitching that’s going to determine whether this team can make any noise in the post season.
Cubs starting pitching since Smyly’s last start and Wicks getting called up (excluding the bullpen game in the Reds double header) - 19 games, 30 ER/116 innings, 2.33 ERA, 11 quality starts, 13-6 team record.
Assad’s start tonight will be the fourth full time through the rotation since going to the Steele, Hendricks, Taillon, Assad, Wicks rotation.
Smyly, by the way, has been pretty good since being moved to the pen. Small sample size, but he has a 3.38 ERA as a reliever this year. He could be the left hander in the pen they’ve been looking for all year.

Haha, that's fair. Fantastic bunt.
That said, I'm as anti-bunt as it comes. The only time I want to see a bunt is if it's for a base hit.
Especially with this year's stolen base success rate.
This. Made no sense to pinch run Mastrobuoni and then bunt. Mastro is a fast runner and 10/11 in steal attempts this year.

Lost 2 out of 3 to a minor league team. 10 baserunners in the first 4 innings should get you more than 3 runs.
Starting to taper off. Need one more burst from the bats before we get to that final series with the Brewers.
Catching the Brewers would be nice, but right now we’re closer to missing the playoffs entirely (2.5 game difference) than we are to catching the Brewers (4 game difference). Need a sense of urgency.
So frustrating. you just know when you squander opportunities in that ballpark it’s gonna come back to bite you.
for whatever reason we stink against the bad teams. We’ll do better against Arizona.

Huge Starting Pitching advantage for us this weekend..............with Steele, Hendricks and Wicks. Unless Gallen goes on short rest, we miss both him and Kelly. On paper, we clearly go 3-0. Now all we have to do is execute.
We also had a huge starting pitching advantage against the Rockies. Execution is the key.

I'm nervous.
When you hit a HR in the 9th when you are down 6 runs, it basically has the same value as a walk.
As nervous as I get when Hendricks is pitching, he's been one of the Cubs' most consistent pitchers. Not flashy, just solid.
