Thank God for Pittsburgh. I think the Cubs +99 run differential is all against them.

I believe you. I was 8 yrs old in ‘69. I wasn’t implying that this team is comparable to the 69 team, just to go from playoff hopeful to playoff nopefull.
I was 7 in 69. My dad would kick the cr@p out of me when he'd catch me listening to those west coast road trips on school nights...... I was willing/begging them to win, but to no avail.

Have talked with Fergie about that team and he says "not a day goes by that I think about that team/year.... The harder we tried the worse we played"

I have never seen a team in the middle of a playoff race have on and put guys from the 26/28 man roster on the IL in September like this team has.
Alzolay, Stroman, Boxberger, Fulmer, Candelario, Madrigal....not even counting guys who have been on all year.

The most glaring need for this team next year is starting pitching. They play defense and can hit pretty well. Hoping they re-sign Bellinger but without a doubt they need some frontline arms.

I have watched almost every game. A couple of things stand out - 1) Ross does not seem to know how to construct a lineup, ie. AC had a great game and is on the bench the next day. This type of lineup construction has been a problem since the beginning of the season. Also, Ross is poor at using the bullpen. He has veterans and continues to trot out rookies in key situations. Boxberger has been with the team several days and finally came in last night and did not give up any runs. Also, why was PCA given a potentially game-changing at bat in the 8th inning?

Even though the Cubs are still very much in the race, playoff hopes feel bleak with the remaining schedule and the way they’ve been playing. Unless they somehow manage to play well at Atlanta and Milwaukee, it’s probably over.

You got your wish for Boxberger. Unfortunately...

The pitching staff walked 6 and struck out 9. Walks have been an issue all year, especially with the bullpen. While they had been dodging issues (Cuas for example), walks are coming back to bite them now.

The playoff run was fun while it lasted. I expected them to win 72 games so they far exceeded my expectations.

I haven't done the math, will Atlanta and Milwaukee have anything to play for here? Not that the Brewers wouldn't relish the chance to pants the Cubs and knock them out, regardless.

I’m afraid you’re right. In my heart I have accepted it. In a way I am considering now as our playoffs, and we’re losing. So we’ll be eliminated. That’s the way the playoffs worl.

It’s about the off season. Add some quality pitching. I feel like we have the nucleus of a good staff with Steele, Stroman (maybe), Wicks (?), and Annan (?). Some of those names may be wrong, but you know who I mean if they are.

You might see Atlanta's starting pitching making their last start of the regular season but I don't think you'll see the Brewer's big three.
Either way, if you can't win a series against Pittsburgh at home with everything on the line you certainly don't deserve to be a playoff team.

In regard to last night, too many wasted opportunities early. And the bullpen, as expected, is falling apart. What are they saving Stroman for? Next week when they're eliminated?

I agree they need an ace (Steele is a #2 and Stroman a #3 imho). However the most glaring need on the field is another run producer. Bellinger is the only one they have, and they will probably lose him. Happ is absolutely not a run producer (paying Happ $21M to walk alot is nuts, by the way). Neither is Swanson or Hoerner - both fine lineup depth but not run producers.

I also think Ross is way over his head, but that's another rant.

What, about Steele's performance this season, suggests he isn't a #1? If he isn't an ace, then there are only about 5 in MLB. The dude has been awesome since his debut. He doesn't walk people and doesn't give up SLUG.
We could definitely use another TOR type guy, but don't sell our guy short. He's one of the best around, particularly under 30.

Cubs won a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The way the Reds and Marlins are playing that may wrap it up.

Edit, I looked at the standings. Disregard the above.

A few thoughts from today's game:
1) Much needed 6 innings of shutout ball from Taillon.
2) Who is Jared Young?
3) Root root root for Yankees (vs. Diamondbacks), Brewers (vs. Marlins), & Pirates (vs. Reds) this weekend.
