I don't know what caused the 1969 collapse but it was epic-bad. Cubs did have a very good team - Santo, Williams, Banks, Beckert, Kessinger, Jenkins, Holtzman, etc.

Arguably the Mets were the worst of the four teams that made the playoffs that year (Braves, Orioles, Twins). Baseball is not fair sometimes.

The Phillies had a major collapse in 1964, IIRC.

Three part answer:

A. 81 day games at home
B. All of those aforementioned stars playing 160-162 games (Catcher Randy Hundley included)
C. Mets' Pitching

Marlins and Reds also win and AZ winning so no change for 2 and 3 wild card.

I have a feeling that the Cubs losing all tie breakers will be a factor.

For what it’s worth, the Cubs do have tie breakers against both the Giants and Padres. One Cubs win or one loss for either team eliminates them from being able to catch the Cubs. They play each other tonight.

And the D-Backs’ loss today opens the door to the #2 slot a crack.

just to say the 2023 Cubs made the playoffs mean NOTHING if they use the back door to get in , or get swept out in the first series

anything can happen . I want them to have the chance , but I’m a bit skeptical of this team & manager right now

Anything can happen in a 3-game series, so if we make the playoffs I don’t think us getting past the Brewers or Phillies is out of the question. Harder to see us getting past the NLDS, but crazier things have happened in baseball.

I know they have the tiebreaker with them but they have absolutely no chance.
Question for the group: Do you think 3-3 gets them in? I have my doubts. I think 4-2 does.

I'd rather face milwaukee in the wild card round. I can see the phillies lineup torching our pitching

Magic number = 6.

I've got tickets for Wednesday and Thursday. Hoping the latter is the clincher! Then we can get our pitching in good order for the post-season. (Uncharacteristically optimistic of me.)
