As much as people don't like this, it isn't such a bad thing. He had success at Illinois and received a promotion. We will always lose assistants when the opportunity arises to take on co-OC role. We had great success at running the ball and this is the type of person that you expect to leave. Also, filling the role of RB coach would be really easy given our personnel. I don't think anyone would see job as a risk. This is almost the opposite of filling the DC role. You have a great system where the play makers are there and barring some unforeseen setback will continue to be good in the near future. The DC role is tougher to fill. You have a head coach that Defense is his baby. The program has looked awful. Although there is only one way to go up, a lot of the credit will go to Lovie.

IMHO different animals.

Agree - under normal circumstances. If Thad left after a bowl next season, then this would be an easier pill to swallow. But any sign of instability hurts when we we feel like we're on the cusp of finally getting this thing to take off (i.e., 6-7 win season). Every little thing has to go right for us to reach that threshold. One seemingly minor "misstep" (losing a recruit, losing a player, losing a coach/key recruiter, longer-than-normal coaching search, etc.) feels like it could have a domino effect that could not only lead to stagnation, but regression (which would likely lead to starting all over at the HC and maybe AD positions). It feels like the next 10 years is hinging on next season, and next season is hinging on 1000 different things (Cooper, the DC hire, the qb situation, Ford, Ward . . .).

Again, I just want to get to solid ground where relatively minor things like this--that every team in the nations faces-- don't threaten to re-sink the program.

Please Nate....Please

Getting Scheelhaase is going to be really tough. Thad is (likely) leaving Illinois because Temple provides multiple years of stability that Illinois cannot right now. Nate already has that built into his situation at Iowa State, plus Campbell could get an even better job and bring Scheelhaase with him (plus the bump in salary). Would Illinois have to double his salary to convince him to make the move? That would be $400k for an assistant, probably not feasible.

Yeah, I really don't see why he would come our way. Didn't Lovie sort of snub him with his first staff? On top of that the stability issue is glaring for someone like him at a pretty decent program with upwards trajectory.

I will say someone on twitter stated he saw Nate in Champaign yesterday. Of course we are talking about twitter, but that doesn't mean the dude is lying either.

Nate was in town last week. He still has family in town. Most likely what the visit was for.

My understanding of the situation was that Lovie had a talk with Nate and let him know that it is a good idea for him to go out and experience something outside of Illinois for a time period. Then he can return with a different perspective and a more rounded understanding of coaching college football. If that is the case, this is the perfect situation.

Cool!
Most likely, absolutely. Does not rule out the possibilities of other reasons either. Also, I don't think it is crazy to think Lovie knew about Thad at least 24 hours before it was made public. It is not outside the realm that he has already contacted Nate.

Lovie's success this upcoming year won't hinge on Thad. If Rod Smith was leaving I would say sound the alarm. Thad is making an upward move, it is not difficult to understand or sell. Recruits don't see instability, fans see instability. If recruits saw instability I don't think we would have just signed the class we signed. Recruits see this as a rebuild.

Without knowing the exact time line that Thad notified Lovie I can’t help but wonder if Lovie might have been looking for 3 coaches for quit some time . Perhaps today’s announcement was timed so that Lovie can announce all 3 coaches at once .

Can only announce 2 hires right now. Other job posting just went up.

Thinking about this a little more, if it is a co-oc move, definitely a step up and can understand. Was recently reading about nfl OC hires, most were QB coaches I believe. Guessing similar may be true for college game....I have no idea but speculating about low # of OC that were RB coaches, so take it when possible.

I think we go into the fall a couple of coaches down. Like the fans, no one is interested unless we make a bowl game this year.

Nate was not happy at all about being passed up by Lovie, I dont see how it can be spun any other way. There was 1 spot open and Lovie went with Cory over Nate. Nate was upset, particularly since he thought he paid his dues by the work in as an analyst. Now I think Lovie made the right call as Cory is really good, but it's not as if Lovie and Nate came to any sort of agreement.

I'd be very surprised if he comes back to work under Lovie, especially since he has a great situation working for Campbell

It really is like playing poker, you never know if you have a winning hand. Campbell is a good coach and if he has another good season, he is going to get some big offers even though he just received a new contract. This scenario doesn't guarantee Nate going with him.

How does Ward move affect recruiting right now and possibility of transfers? Thanks.

The time frame for naming a DC is very troubling.
Team after team has named assistant coaches and here we sit with nothing. Lovie better have a exceptional name in mind or everyone will be disappointed.
This has gone on way, way too long.
