Few notes regarding today's matches:

-First win for England over Germany in a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup Final held at the old Wembley between England and West Germany. First win for England in a non-friendly match vs. Germany since September 1, 2001 when England won at the Olympiastadion in Munich 5-1 (which inspired the England 5, Germany 1 song by English punk band The Business) in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.
-First time since Euro 2004 that Germany didn't win at least one match in the knockout round of a major tournament. In that tournament, the Germans didn't even make it out of the group stage.
-Dovbyk's winning goal in the Ukraine match was 2nd latest goal ever scored in the Euros. Latest goal in Euros was scored by Semih Senturk for Turkey who scored an equalizer in the 122nd minute in a quarterfinal match in Euro 2008 vs. Croatia. Turkey would go on to win the match on penalties.
-Ukraine's win is their first knockout round victory in the Euros, with this being only the 3rd Euros they've ever qualified for. It's their first win in a knockout round in a major tournament since their only appearance in a World Cup in 2006 when they defeated Switzerland on penalties.
-Sweden meanwhile still have not won a knockout round match in the Euros since Euro 1992, which they hosted and finished 3rd.

Also of note, none of the teams from the so-called "Group of Death" won a knockout round match.

Can I just say how unsatisfying it is to watch all (ok I watched most of the game, who could watch the whole thing) of a soccer game and then have it decided by penalty kicks. You may as well flip a stupid coin or rock/paper/scissors would be good too. The goalies are straight up guessing and it has so little to do with all the incredible skill that these guys (or girls) show during the game. Play 15 minutes at full strength and then go to 7 per side or something that resembles the game.

U.S. wins their group in the Gold Cup but didn't really look impressive in 2 of the 3 matches.

They will play the Group C runner-up (Costa Rica or Jamaica) next Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. Match will begin at 9:00 PM CT and will air on FS1.

I don't have a good feeling for tonight's game.

I've been watching the Copa América, Gold Cup, some of the Euros, and some of the Olympics on the Spanish speaking station, which I think has been Univision for all of the games. I just find the broadcasters more entertaining, even though I can only pick out a few words. The only time I had to switch to FS1 to see what was happening was a water break. If the Spanish station called it something de agua, I think I would have figured it out.

Here are some words I picked up if you need a cheat sheet:
Gol = goal
Falta = foul
No falta = no foul
Estados Unidos = the United States
Increíble = unbelievable
Cero-cero = 0-0

(Just having a little fun with the cheat sheet.)
