Greg Eboigbodin (2017 PF) commits to Illinois

I'm enthusiastic about this pick-up. Think he's a terrific fit. Defense might be tough and trial by fire, but we really needed a big, and this really improves our options.

Interesting. I've had a good number of Nigerian friends and students in classes. Many times I've seen the g will be silent in when it comes before another consonant. My take based on my experience would be what Werner put except I'd say "boy" for the second syllable.

Ee-boy-BO-din

See, there's another reason for you to put in for the Assistant to the HC job - you know how to pronounce all the team members' names! ;)

Not sure what the level of competition he was playing against, but the video clips show he has some skills. It will be interesting to see how quickly he gets acclimated to college and BU's system. I think 10 minutes a game next year might be wishful thinking, but maybe by the last third of the season. Still a very nice pick up with lots of upside.

Reminds me of Nnanna. He only started playing in high school, and although he was never an offensive powerhouse, he was a very important player for us.

Can't wait to see what the new staff can do with Greg.

I was thinking Egwu too. Someone tell me he has more potential than Egwu. Groce loved Egwu which is not a glowing endorsement to me.

Does this mean we have a shot at winning the Braggin' Rights Game now?

Hopefully everyone loved Egwu. He was definitely frustrating at times, but he was the best defender the Illini have had for a long time. There's a reason he's our all time leading blocks leader.

I would be thrilled if Greg got to that level!

One of the few programs more desperate for bodies than us. Rumors of an endorsement deal with Five Guys are swirling around the internets.

Only 1314 calories in a large fry @ 5 Guys. Of course they give you 50% more in every bag. So maybe 2,000. Tisdale would eat 3 of those in a day.:)

Agree 100%. Nnanna may have had some skills issues, but the kid gave 100% every time he hit the floor, and I can't expect more than that. Guys like that can contribute, even if they are frustrating.

I think even Egwu's vociferous critics missed him dearly on the defensive end. The team plainly did. If we just got Egwu 2.0 I'll bear it, because he was a ridiculous defender.

If Ebo is half the defensive player that Nnanna was and has soft hands he will excel. Not saying All B1G but he will be a fine addition to the team. I can't believe he won't struggle mightily this year at least. Very few bigs can handle the speed or strength of high major play as freshmen or sophomores for that matter. Effort doesn't seem to be any issue for him.

Chin on Tay and J show talking about GE. Saying he comes from a soccer background, might be the fastest player on the team this year, has great hbd eye coordination, athletic, and has a motor. Future is bright.

It won't be a conditioning issue

I agree. A soccer player is generally in top condition. Raw strength usually challenges young bigs and by speed I mean the speed of the game. That is hard to adapt to for most freshmen. Of course BU plays such a high speed game Ebo may adapt quickly.

But could it be the soccer start that creates the inability to catch a ball the circumference of a dinner plate? I hope not but Egwu played like Dennis Rodman without the ball and Roberto Duran when it was thrown to him. Hoping big Greg E has better luck and skill.

Seemed to look pretty good in the video. I think he's going to be solid for us, and better than any of us are imagining.

I like bigs who played soccer. Obviously this isn't a comparison to Ebo, but always makes me think of this:

I don't know I am imaginging pretty big things, his JR and SR years. But I am also thinking, he plays this year, we land 2 bigs in 18 and Greg E says hey coach I really need to put in some work can I rs my soph year. Then Big George does the same thing after having played as FR.

Heard the interview with Chin btw in which he mentioned they call Eboigbodin "Spicey G" ... that's gotta stick. :thumb::thumb:
