Looks like we have just seen the tip of the iceberg on this stuff. Seems like lots of ‘Champions’ as are bogus as a $3 bill.
So... the No-Longer-World-Champion-Houston-Astros seem to have lots of company in the ‘We don’t care about ethics and fair play and sportsmanship and Loser Stuff like that! Fair play and good sportsmanship are for LOSERS!’ Philosophy.

An NCAA enforcement staff has been at the University of Michigan this week to look into the sign-stealing probe, sources told ESPN.www.espn.com
That was true of doping in pro cycling during Lance Armstrong’s reign. Many argued he earned his wins among a fully doped peloton, a level but corrupt playing field. Good argument IMO. At the same time many of us also feel having his wins expunged was deserved if only because of the way he tried destroy the careers and reputations of support staff who testified truthfully against him. Cheating destroys competitive sports, reducing it to something akin to pro wrestling and defrauding those who follow the rules.
Good point. Their decisions are necessarily a somewhat subjective assessment, so it makes sense to discount the W-L record of a cheater.
This boils down to a sickly ‘need’ of some athletes and coaches and programs to ‘win’.
This is a mental and spiritual illness and deficiency that drives the entire Cheating motivation. ‘Winning’ by cheating just does not register with those who do this. Why? It is their sick need to win by any-means-necessary that is the darkness in their mind. It’s like they are hooked on it and have to have their win‘fix’ to satisfy some empty space. And then they need the next one right quick.
That’s why there is such a clear divide on this issue. Cheaters don’t have a problem with doing this for the reasons stated above. And those who have their Moral Compass will never be comfortable or accept Cheating because it is a basic offense to our sense of fairness and honest competition.
Pro wrestling these days is actually being quite honest. They freely admit that they are ‘Sports Entertainment’ and they make no pretenses about having real matches. Sure, these guys can still get hurt in the ring with all their antics. But these are injuries suffered in the course of performing their pre-arranged match scripts and not due to anything intentional or as a result of honest competition.
Cheating in pro and college sports simply robs the fans of honest contests and meaningful results. And if we lose any more honest competing in sports... then sports will have fully joined all the other aspects of our lives today where honestly and getting a fair deal have been erased.

Stealing signs is not the issue. It is the manner which scUM did it ie recording games in person.
Watching game tape and understanding tendencies is not cheating. That is preparation. If you acquire film by unauthorized means that is cheating

Pardon the contrarianism but what I'm reading here is everyone knew about it and countermeasures were not difficult to take. But this is the worst thing ever. And Michigan must be destroyed for it.
Stealing ("decoding" is probably a better term for it) signals is not against the rules. Michigan apparently had some people attend games away from Ann Arbor and make video records of what happened on the sidelines. That is the actual violation.
Now, consider Michigan State, a week or so ago they a player try to spear a guy who was on the ground in the back of the head. If he'd hit the guy hard enough he probably could have paralyzed the guy. That got him a half game suspension.
Going to a football game you shouldn't have along with tens of thousands of other people versus trying to maim a defenseless player. Which is worse? Hmmm...
Not saying this is all right, or that there shouldn't be a price to pay. But a little sense of proportion is in order here.

I'd liken it to playing poker in some old west saloon. You know going in everyone at the table is trying to cheat, you look around and don't see a sucker because it's you. The options are not to play in the first place, match the environment, or go broke. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do".
Either drop down to U of Chicago level, match the morals and rules of SEC/Big Ten competitors both written and unwritten, or accept perpetual losing...kind of like Illinois football results.
You have nailed down the ethical dilemma that a sports program faces who tries to do things the right way. In short, you are penalized for that.
And that sucks – big time. I would offer an additional option of still trying to run your program the right way and just living with the consequences. If you never can win a Big Ten Title or go to the CFB Playoffs then so be it. Stand for something bigger and greater that the fleeting results of who wins a game.
In short, rather than dragging yourself down into the mud with the others... hold yourself to a higher standard and ‘win’ over others that way. I think most of Illini Nation could live with that.

I think that was the 'accept perpetual losing' option in the original.
It can be better than this. Some young players might really value a program that stands for something better and beyond just winning by any means necessary. As the Illini hold themselves above and apart from those who want to wrestle in the mud... the Illini can be THE National program that certain guys of talent would want to be with. In other words, Illini can get better-than-average talent with the right mindset of playing the game and the right way to win.
For me, if the Illini get down and do business as many of the others do... my interest level in the Illini will plummet. We don't need the Illini becoming another North Carolina basketball or Michigan football. Those two can own that sullied territory if they want to.

Much information here as well as some good questions. Michigan’s illegal scouting was expensive and extensive. Staling’s salary is peanuts by comparison. Alumni slush fund? Sargent Schultz’s budget? Follow the money: Michigan football status could hinge on who paid for sign-stealing trips
You have to prove the University knew about it. Right now their defense is some assistant who gets paid $50k paid for the whole thing or had some help from donors
Therefore if they fire him they did nothing wrong. Considering Self UNC and others have not been punished I am not holding my breath. Even if there is a punishment it will come out in 10 years
So follow the money, which surely moved electronically. I’m sure they’re chasing the trail upstream.
IF it’s University money, the University is responsible for funding the scheme. No way does a $55,000 per year assistant have independent authority for that kind of spending. Sarbanes Oxley pretty much ensures no one person can spend anything without a “next level” approval.
