let me say first of all... i don't like Michigan, i don't like Harbaugh. when i hear people talk about him being the next Bears coach, i cringe.

But, of all the stupid violations, this is the dumbest. People have been pre-scouting their opposition at every level, for every sport for
decades. Watching the other bench to pick up signals also happens at every level for every sport. Comon' people, what would you think
if the illini got accused of this?

I kind of agree with this, but there is definitely a difference between scouting at opponents' games (which isn't allowed) and stealing signs from the sidelines.

Having said that, I think this whole thing is way closer to a NothingBurger than it is anywhere close to a death penalty. With what we know now, I would not be in favor of a current season post season ban.

It's pretty much the same difference between a player at second base stealing signs vs a camera in the outfield stealing signs and then relaying that to the batter.

I'm sure it's done at some level by everyone, but Michigan literally had a guy next to the coordinator with a chart that had all the signals on it so they could more or less know what the play was.

As much as I detest Michigan, MGOBLOG is well-written and its proprietor, Brian Cook, created what is the best and longest-running college sports blog, surviving long after Spencer Hall unloaded Every Day Should Be Saturday to SBNation for a king's ransom. They're all arrogant p&%$ks over there these days given the football team's resurgence after 15 years of mediocrity but I usually find that what they write concerning the sport is worth reading.

I'm just going to post this and leave it there. Am interested in what this Rorschach blot looks like to Loyalty faithful:

It appears to me they are still in the "plausible deniability" stage.

Comments are a fun read.
Denial is my impression as well of the article. To me he came off as very emotional and ready for a fight.

some people want to dismiss this as nothing
some people want them to get the death penalty

me ? if they don’t get a very meaningful penalty, what is the reason for any rules or regulations then ? just for show ?

Harbaugh is a known cheater . this fits his M.O.
it’s time for him to leave college and it’s time for scUM to pay the price for it

They must be banned from the post season. Anything not keeping them from the playoff is not a punishment. Vacating wins means nothing to anyone except record books. Players, coaches, and fans will only respond to losing a chance at a title, or even a bowl game.

Millions of dollars are kept from their program, players who came to play at the highest level no longer have that motivation and lose chances to be seen on a national stage. Fans lose interest because there is no chance to win anything and the regular season doesn't matter.

Two to four years of postseason bans, including B1G Championship, should be the minimum. That's the only real lever the NCAA has.
That's a good joke, apparently you are new college football fan? There is no way any of that happens to a blueblood program. Slap on the wrist, Harbaugh moves to the pros, and that it is the last you will hear of this scandal. Making Michigan lose millions also means the Big Ten conference and the NCAA loses millions

We did college tours for spring break for my son. Michigan was the first stop and the did show us the Hogwarts' library. But then every other school we visited also had their version of Hogwarts. As a proud Illinois alum, I am glad that Michigan was his least favorite of the 6 we have visited. Also better for my pocketbook that it was low on the list.

I'm not saying it will happen, but should.

ESPN is reporting that the Las Vegas Raiders have fired coach Josh McDaniels and GM David Ziegler. Paving a landing spot for Harbaugh?

we can only hope that this circus continues and keeps dragging ScUM down into the slime pit in which they deserve to spend the rest of eternity. And in keeping with date today . . .

Not going to happen. If severely punished, their recovery will be swift and complete. The university, and more importantly the sports media, will see to that. Egregious behavior by a blue blood has no real or lasting consequence. As a prime example, think Penn State.

I've watched several Harbaugh interviews. He strikes me as very Beckman-like. Not particularly intelligent. Add to that, raised in the omnipotent Michigan culture. A history of prestige and success is promoted by the university and the media. But if you look deeper you see hubris and deception. I'm reminded of a picture of an antebellum southern aristocratic family. Well dressed owner and family in the foreground with several dirty slave children in the background that look (not surprisingly) like the owner.

the Raiders are one of a handful of NFL organizations that are managed as terribly as the Bears are .

they must average a new coach every two seasons ever since Flores left

He's mildly Aspy at the very least, which explains his aggressive bluntness. Was a d&ck as a college QB and remains so. (I once heard John Kolesar, the flanker who played with him as a freshman in '85, blame the 3-3 tie with Illinois that season solely on Harbaugh's petulant refusal to throw to him despite the fact that he claims he was chronically wide open that day.)

I'm down with the "hubris" and "deception" characterizations, too. Regardless of whether they win the NC this year I assume he'll scratch the NFL itch promptly.

“Everyone is watching this,” one Mountain West defensive coordinator told The Athletic. “A slap on the wrist and everyone will be doing it.”

One Big Ten coach told The Athletic that immediate postseason ban as the only reasonable response in this situation.

“If you’re doing it — which they did — and you’re caught — which they were — and it’s explicitly against the rules — which it is — and everyone believes that to some degree it’s a competitive advantage, then they shouldn’t be able to play in the Big Ten title game,” he said. “The Big Ten owes 13 other programs the competitive balance and owes it to them to protect the sanctity of the conference. If that many programs have confirmed that he bought tickets specifically under his name, they can’t play in the Big Ten title game. There’s no gray area. It’s explicitly against the rules.”
