Because our conference tourney at MSG is a week earlier than normal. We have fewer weeks after Christmas to work with.

I assume this a one time thing, that is, just this one season, not a permanent thing? At least as far as we know.

We start with 5 road games in our first 7. Im taking this as a positive. Most are over break without students. When we have most of our home games our students will be back. Our schedule lines up for us to make a run late if we gel.

This. We only have 1 home B1G game during winter break this season. And 3 road games during the opponent's winter break. This is the first time in awhile where the "winter break schedule" has been favorable for us. Minnesota, Michigan, and Nebraska should all be considerably less hostile environments with students gone.

I just saw one of the Illini Facebook pages post a highlight video of Alstork. It made me check out another too. I'm not trying to be a heartbreaker, but I'm not soo sure he is the answer in regards to putting up big numbers. Seeing his style against sub par opponents worries me. Take it for what it's worth, but I'm making a prediction for him. 11ppg 2 assists. I will definitely take him cause he will be valuable, but I just don't see the big numbers coming from him. I believe he is going to be more of a shooter from 3 then anything else. (Although I'm not a college basketball coach!!!!:D) I hope I am 5ppg off!

Some say his effect will be similar to Ravonte Rice

Consider the fact he had to produce in a offense that was not designed to score on the run, this will be right up his alley. He likes to score, he will be right there when that ball breaks lose, ready to pickup and slam it home. If you like dunks we will have hem this year.;):illinois:

I saw him play a few times last season & Im hoping the competition level makes him play at a higher level. Not really the sorta player that can create shots for himself against power 5 competition....he had some good games hitting the spot up jumper but not a lot of consistent success getting to the hoop..

Put me in the minority that likes the earlier conference games. Playing 12 cream puffs followed by 18 real teams has lost its luster. Reminds me of SEC football scheduling.

There's a not-crazy case to be made for going 11-7
I listened to Loren Tate's latest podcast today. It is basketball focused this week. He studied Illini coaching changes dating back to the 1930's and found that the new coach generally finishes with a comparable record to the final year of the coach he is replacing. Hence a 9-9 conference record would be setting the bar quite high for Underwood this season. The conclusion he reaches is that the talent on the court is generally unchanged from one year to the next. (The "x factor" of the new coach typically does not have much of an impact.)

I agree. The plays he was creating shots or making moves toward the basket did not come off to me as being successful against Big10 opponents. He screams spot up shooter off dishes from Mark Smith in transition or pull up jumpers from 3 to me...

I have no idea what to expect from this team. Heck, last year we seemed just a few games away from a late bid after beating MSU, but then we couldn't turn around and beat Rutgers. I feel and expect there to be a lot fewer blowouts with Underwood which should translate to a chance for more wins by virtue of the score not being out of hand. I'm sure upsets will happen, but I don't expect games like the aforementioned Rutgers to happen often. I think Underwood will light some fires under some rears to prevent that from happening.

With all of that being said, we gained some talented newcomers, but lost a great deal of experience so I'm curious how quickly the young guys can adjust. I'll take an optimistic view and say 20-11 prior to heading into the conference tournament.

I should add -- Loren and Steve Kelly are my C-U idols, provided I ignore their St. Louis Cardinal allegiances! There's a lot of historical knowledge wrapped up in those two.

(Glad to hear that the latter is coming back from Denver to assist on radio with Illini football this season.)

This video gives me hope that he won't be a JCL like player. It's a highlight video so obviously take it with a grain of salt, but he shows the ability to score at all 3 levels.

Yeeeeah I'm not sure what you're watching. I see a guy who cuts, who drives and dishes, who creates off the dribble, who can post someone up and even can throw a put back jam in there. This an experienced big time scorer coming here with a coach who puts an emphasis on offensive efficiency. I would be SHOCKED if he only scores 11ppg. I'd be less surprised if he put up Jeff Carrol numbers from last year.

Any thoughts about how this schedule affects our potential RPI?

He wasn't playing in BU's system though ;)

There's some logic to this, but this really isn't the same team, and BU and Groce are radically different coaches. Just adding 2 or 3 additional wins makes a big difference.

We have a pretty weak non-conf, followed by what should be a strong conference schedule. There are more conf games, so on balance I think we'll be fine. A lot of P5 teams will have similar schedules. I think the BIG will be in the top 2-3 conf due to its depth, so we'll be fine as long as we take care of business.
