I believe that's completely possible, but he would have to be significantly better than those guys out of the gate to be our "best scorer" or "most dominant offensive threat" this year as was stated. Deron & Dee averaged 6 and 12 ppg respectively as frosh.

The minutes are there, and he should start from the get-go... I think those numbers are very attainable for MS.

If you score within 7 seconds, the other team will have a lot of possessions to score.

It’s first 7 or last 7. Balances out as the game goes along. However, lots of pressure on the defense to sprint back, this fatiguing them as the game goes on.

They were last in their conference last year in points allowed.

That’s concerning, but when you play with tempo a much more interesting stat to look at is ppp allowed. I watched the Michigan game in tournament so I’m gonna assume that was awful too

I am intrigued to see how they handle Matic, no doubt he does not look physically ready for Big Ten basketball and I think he may struggle defensively. However, kid seems smart and can really shoot it, I have a feeling he will see some minutes where we have another strong Big on the floor and maybe just giving guys a blow for 2-3 min at a time.

All speculation from Piper is that they'd like to Redshirt Matic. He has more information than I do, but I would be surprised if by year three or four Matic doesn't get a contract offer to play professionally in Europe and not be around for four years, let alone 5.

He could get a pro contract now. Big reason he wanted to come over is for a degree

"Vesel's mom was also big on her son earning an education versus signing a professional contract as a 19-year-old. Illinois provided that opportunity as well."

His defenses have usually been good. The year before last, SFA averaged over 80 and gave up 63.

Last year, OSU led the league in scoring at almost 86 a game but gave up over 78. Definitely more up and down the court than we are used to.

I wonder, though, what the stats are if we factor out the horrible 0-6 start in league play? After he made the adjustments to "right the ship" so to speak.

Reading that tweet where Underwood said Mark Smith could have a Jason Kidd like impact lead me to look at some stats. J-Kidd did this in his two years in college:

Fresh: 32mpg, 53/28/65, 13pts, 5reb, 7.7ast, 3.8stl, 3.9to
Soph: 35mpg, 54/36/69, 16.7pts, 6.9reb, 9.1ast, 3stl, 4.3to, PAC10 POY

I think it's fair to say Mark Smith won't average those assist and steal numbers and that his shooting numbers from 3 and the free throw line will be better. But if he's anywhere close to that, we'll be in for a treat. Year one, that Cal team made it to the Sweet 16 and he was the USBWA Freshman of the Year. Year two, they lost in the first round but J-Kidd was a consensus All-American and went 2nd overall in the NBA Draft.

I was looking for some ppp allowed. stats but didn’t find anything. The most advanced stuff I found was here. Lots of breakdowns, just no team ppp allowed, unless I missed it.

KenPom has ppp. Sports Reference shows defensive 2 and 3pt shooting %'s. OSU last year allowed opponents to shoot 52.7% on 2 pts (312th in country) and 36.7% on 3 pt (279th in country). Both stats are really telling. Not impressive defensively.

I think we are getting way ahead of ourselves regarding Mark Smith. Can we at least let him play a half dozen games.:)

I may have posted something similar a while back, but again, I am just fine watching defensive growing pains if we have exciting basketball games again.
It will be much easier to be patient with this staff if we are playing competitive games and losing 90-85 instead of 75-59.
I think we may well end up being more competent defensively than his OSU team from last year. :illinois:

Thanks. Looked on KenPom. He had osu at number one in pp100p, which we already heard a lot about. 126 points per 100 or 1.26ppp. Defensively, ok st was 154th. 103.5 pp100p. Or basically 1.04 per possession. Also had them at 66th in tempo.

Underwood’s last year at SFA they were 57th in offense per 100 possions, scoring 111.1 per 100. Defensively they were 38th, allowing 95.5 per 100.

2015 @ SFA: 111.7 per 100p on offense for a rank of 32. 98.1 per 100p on defense for a rank of 98.

First year at SFA: 111.7 pp100p again, but this time only to rank 57, when the year after it was 32nd. 100.9 pp100p on defense for a rank of 105.

Underwood teams average an offensive ranking of 36.75 (heavily aided by that number 1 last year, 48.66 if you only look at the SFA years), and a defensive ranking of 98.75.

Ppp is more telling than shot percentage. Ppp accounts for turnovers (which bu tries to force). They will likely be pretty "meh" defensively. But not bad.

Well you better or want to get excited about some player on the team if not Smith because the season is here and we need someone to get this BU train steam rolling!!!

Question for those that have looked into going to the game against UNLV at the MGM Garden Arena. Is the University selling tickets to this game? Just trying to sit with other Illini fans if possible.

Oh I totally agree. I was just looking into what our coach said and how good Jason Kidd actually was (spoiler alert, really gd good), which anyone would have a hard time replicating.
