I see articles like the following every once in a while but this is the first that I have seen that mentions Illinois. A look at Illinois Mens Basketball from another school's standpoint. Not particularly insightful but I think respectful.

"Here’s what Penn State men’s basketball can expect from Illinois, Purdue and Michigan this season"

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/sports/men_basketball/article_559f3e54-b868-11e7-b7f9-43fe002eb993.html

Thanks for sharing, jmilt. I enjoy seeing opponents' take on our team.

From the article:
...Smith was the No. 5-ranked player in Illinois...

Clearly the author doesn't know much of anything beyond what he or she discovered in a quick google search. Choosing the 247 ranking as the defining description of Mark Smith is just goofy, considering he had the best offer list of any Illinois kid and won Mr. Basketball. He's clearly the top guard from Illinois this year and possibly the top prospect, although Tilmon is hard to beat as a prospect.

In the future I hope the designers of the basketball poster will go back to include the whole team. It's nice to be able to look back in the future and see who was on the team in 2017. I've been collecting them since the early 80's.

I agree, this is very disappointing to me. I've been collecting them for a while too and know will have a break in the years. Hope they get back to it or they'll ruin a tradition I adopted from my Uncle years and years ago. I'm not going to hang a poster of just one player so they are really messing up my program!

I like it when guys say this stuff. Typically you get the answer that they are just taking it one game at a time. Fuel for the rivalry.

Regardless, what are the chances he uses this to get focused and perform at a higher level vs. getting excited and fouling himself to the bench?

Had 7 fouls in 13 minutes against Kansas. Pretty likely.

Whenever I watched any of his games in high school (maybe 3?) or when I would read a writeup about his team's game, I swear he was always in foul trouble. Sometimes he'd finish the second quarter needing just one more to foul out. This isn't a one off occurrence.

#Illini bball fans I had a chance to chat with YOUR NEW Coach Brad Underwood. Tell me your thoughts on his comments on the game today.

We all know that, but most people outside of Illini fans won't yet. Don't be too hard on them, they can't be expected to do a completely thorough analysis on every single player on every single team. He'll show everybody soon enough!

These reports are written like a intro to a book.. where's Mark Smith in these articles? Is it a good or bad thing he's not mentioned???? Worries me

I'd take it as a good thing. We've heard a lot of glowing things about Mr. Smith. The lack of Trent has me concerned since he did not play on Sunday (per the board).

Right there have been two reports from practice and o mention of Smith

This is inform for a potential team leader/scorer high contributor for this team this season....not a word about his progression.

Well BU indirectly compared him to Jason Kidd, so there's that...

I will say this, saw Trent very recently and he is very good! Mark Smith apparently had a bad scrimmage Sunday and not a great practice Monday. With that being said, he will be very good by the time things get really rolling in the next few weeks. The biggest weakness imo will be defensively. My guess is not one of these kids have ever played on the line defensively and we will see them get beat backdoor a lot in the process of learning. I believe the staff does such a great job teaching, they will ‘get it’ sooner than later. Just my opinion.

From the McColley article:
Underwood’s staff learned a lot about their team Sunday. Most of it is intangible, and can’t be translated into data. Sure, they kept track of missed shots. They tracked rebounding. They even know how many times the lads missed an opportunity to set a screen.

Is he English? This reminds me of those interviews of the Beatles by English reporters back in the 60s when they would says things like, "well, the lads have released a new album". Also, I often hear "lads" on British TV shows as in "the lads were just having a bit of fun". Just sounds odd coming from a US source.

Tilmon said in an interview he "won't soon forget what illini fans said to him after he committed to Mizzou" and that he "can't wait for our game"

Tillmon isn't as talented as Cliff Alexander or Eddy Curry, but they all share similar poor decision making. I don't see Tillmon in the NBA, possibly some lower division bball elsewhere. I just don't see the drive or maturity to take his game to the next level.

Yea can see it now:

Illinois fans chanting TIL....MON, cant stay committed, cant get off the bench.

Wish the kid well actually, but he is setting himself up with that kind of talk.

Is the Underwood boy required to redshirt this year or is there some special dispensation since he moved with his coaching father? I think he took a redshirt year previously.

No special dispensation. He can practice with the team, but he cannot play in a regular season game. Scrimmages don't count.

St Louis Dispatch article on Tilmon. I don't think the above quotes came from this article but there is a similar one. Also talks about how the arrest for underage drinking made him grow up. Article starts off with stuff about the Kansas/Missouri border war so you have to go down a ways to get to Illinois mention. And he has not been on social media since July.

I can't wait to see the hype build up and the kind of articles that are written as the game gets closer. It should have much more juice than recent years. Mark Smith already said the Mizzou game is the one he is looking forward to the most.

Mizzou is like our little brother. They are really excited about Cuonzo and the Porters but so naive. Meanwhile, we have a real coach and beating them would help us explain to them that Cuonzo is going to drive their program into the ground within 5 years.
