NBA seems to draft on measurables and potential these days. Dominance in college is discounted compared to the past. First round picks from last year who didn’t put up dominant stats include:
Keon Johnson 11/3.5/2.5
Jalen Johnson 11/6:2
Josh Christopher 14/5/1.5
Scottie Barnes was a top 5 pick and ROY and didn’t even start at FSU, averaging 10 and 4

With RJ’s measurables, if he gets 12/5/2 I think he’s a first round pick based on what NBA teams draft on these days. JMHO.

RJ could definitely have the talent of JD or KM but the fact is no matter how good RJ is, he is on way too talented of a team to command 15+ shots per game and a 30%+ usage rate.

I could see him averaging 15ppg and leading the team in scoring, but I think that is his ceiling on this team with Mayer and TSJ.
This team will be the most balanced and deepest team we have had in some time. We will be able to attack from multiple players. We might have 5 guys with 10+ points a game and 3 having near 10. We will be a running, fast paced passing team with lots of movement. I would not say that we would score at will but the in and out passing will help in open jumpers as the defense will be out of position as we work the ball all over. RJ will take a step into becoming a leader along with Hawk, Goode, Mayer and Shannon. This is the type of team Brad has been wanting to build since coming here. Teams that can run, pass and drive.

You realize 10 months ago, many on here were speculating that we’d go 11 or 12 deep last year? I like potential of this group, but we really aren’t that deep. I do think we’ve got 9 guys (as of now) that can contribute. But as we saw last year, !!!! happens.

I thought we would have gone 10 deep but as you said, things happen. But this coming year, we will be more talented and will run an offense that will be fast paced. I doubt we have all the crap we had last year.

Well when you only have 11 players on scholarship, 9 players that can contribute is deep.

If/When we add nance or backup C/PF, whoever it is will get playing time. That's 10. (I dont see anyone getting bumped out with this addition.)

Everyone in our Top 10 other than Hawkins is a former 4 star recruit and Hawkins is one of the biggest locks to be a solid contributor to next year's squad. Dainja and Harris are probably the most likely of that group to be "non-contributors" (or, have to play as necessary because no other options in the case of Dainja). Clark (based on recruiting pedigree), Shannon (experience), Mayer (experience) and Melendez (flashes + opportunity) are also pretty much locks or close enough to locks to be contributors. Goode, Rodgers and Epps are all in the "wait and see" category and given minutes constraints you wouldn't expect all of them to be major contributors but some should. There is certainly a best case scenario where have more contributors than minutes available, but it's not unfathomable as well for the Illini to be a team hurting for depth if an injury comes up given how unproven so many of our players will be. Filling one more spot with a quality player is definitely something I think the staff will want to do.

I have been trying to play out this lineup in my head for weeks. I'm now convinced the roster, at least those that could/would start, is set. I have no idea how these young guys will do in practice to earn PT, but if Ty Rodgers is starting for the 18U National team, I'd be hard-pressed to think he won't be starting for us.

Go small early, make other teams try to keep up with us, and adjust.
Skyy
TSJ
RJ
Rodgers
Mayer

5 on 5 off

Epps
Harris
CoHawk
Dainja Dainja
Paxton

We can easily run the Grinnel system with this team...how much fun would that be!! Basketball traditionalists would be having heart attacks in the stands and Loyalty during game threads would literally melt down servers!

You forgot Goode and Lieb (should include Lieb if you're including a freshmen walk-on)

How could I forget the key to the cog, Goode...Replace Paxton with Goode and now you have a team that would compete in most conferences!

With the lineup I threw out there, Paxton would be needed with Hawkins and Dainja Dainja on the court as a shooter
