The years that has happened I decided to completely ignore that it happened. I also ignore and write off anyone who brings it up. It helps me feel superior to everyone that interact with. Warning: This method doesn't work for everyone.
I love this approach. It is the only way I keep my sanity when dealing with my wife's family and supporters of a particular politcal party :)

OK, moral dilema here. My best friend from high school went to Iowa. I went to Illinois. We're old. We're still great friends. This goes back to when we were both in school in the early 90s when I roadtripped to Iowa City and saw both our football and basketball teams win there despite obnoxious Hawkeye fans rattling car keys every time Deon Thomas shot a free throw. And him coming to Champaign to watch Nick Bell run all over a great Illini team in the most demoralizing Illinois football loss I've seen in my lifetime.

Now we're getting to that next milestone of the big 5-0. UGH!! But we saw this matchup in NYC and thinking what a great time to go see both our favorite teams play. I watch Illinois beat Texas, then don't know what to do when Duke and Iowa play. (honestly, I'd probably quietly pull for Duke)

I'm thinking lifelong frendship has to (slightly) top my hatred for Iowa, right, and the two of us do this trip together? And my friend and I have a great time in NYC, get to see the teams we live and die for play on the big stage. Or am I so petty that if I have to see Iowa win and Illinois lose it ruins the whole experience and I have a miserable 12-hour car ride back to Illinois?

Sports, man, so irrational when you think about it...
You GO! Root for both teams. He's your best friend. Iowa is a brother member of the greatest conference that ever existed. Offer encouragement to each other. Watch great BB. Have a blast together. I promise you, as an older man, regardless of the outcomes, you will be glad you did it!

Most replies seem to be leaning the other way, but this here for me. Actually seems a bit easy, given the friendship and the blue blood opponent - might be different if Iowa were playing a 'neutral' opponent. Then again I compartmentalized my hate for Pearl specifically, more so than for Iowa.

And to the original poster, as one of those Illini on the other side of 50, thanks for making me feel extra old today! 😉 View attachment 18437
What Pearl did was unethical yet Iowa didn't punish him. They deserve as much and perhaps more criticism.

Recency bias, but he moved up my dislike scale with the handshake line incident. And besides, he's the father of several dislikable McCafferys.
Looking back in hindsight after the Mich/Wisconsin handshake line…fran walking away from the handshake line and taking the team off the floor was the probably right move. Didn’t seem like it at the time…but was probably correct

And 50 is old? I was in Champaign during the '67 slush fund scandal... THAT'S old! Root for the big Ten... then wash your mouth out.

And I LOVE this iteration of the Illini.

Why all the negative feeling about Nance? Was something announced?
I think Northwestern hates us as much as we hate Iowa (though my brother is an Iowa grad.) It would be hard to play four years at NW and then transfer to a hated rival. Kind of a betrayal...like Grandy going to Michigan would be...

Any good podcasts out there for Illinois basketball?

Bad losses are a right of passage. Just a reminder that the biggest upset of sports (of all time, really) came when pre-season #1 Virginia lost to a team that wasn't even in the NCAA:

Virginia bounced back and ended up one basket away from making the Final Four that year. If we land Nance and lose to Northwestern, or even if we don't land him and get the same outcome...I will neither be surprised, nor worried.

That might not even the greatest bounce back in Virginia history. They were also the first #1 seed to lose to a 16. The next year they were National champions.

I recommend going, but fly there and back to avoid the 12 hour drive back, just in case.

Illini in OC

In. The. Alley.
There is no college or university called Kansas City. There is University of Missouri Kansas City or were they referring University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
Lots of schools formerly known as "University of X - Y" now refer to themselves as "Y".
UNCC is now Charlotte, UWGB = Green Bay, UW-M = Milwaukee, etc. Memphis St is now Memphis.
UMKC may now be "Kansas City".

God help us if UIUC is ever called Urbana-Champaign:eek:

Let's just hope the NCAA Chief gets it right when we get our Natty.

If RJ takes a leap this year, does he go pro?And I’m not even talking about a Johnny Davis/Keegan Murray BTPOY/AA type leap.

I think his biggest issue is he just needs to add strength. So if he comes back in the fall with about 15 pounds more muscle, and then puts up, say, 12/5/2 with around 40% from 3, I think that’s enough to get him drafted in the first round. I think he has all the measurables of a modern NBA wing. Excited to see what he does next year.

Last year’s Hutch and Belo will show him the way

That's a nice jump, but not nearly enough to cement himself as a first rounder, IMO.

RJ could definitely have the talent of JD or KM but the fact is no matter how good RJ is, he is on way too talented of a team to command 15+ shots per game and a 30%+ usage rate.

I could see him averaging 15ppg and leading the team in scoring, but I think that is his ceiling on this team with Mayer and TSJ.
