I have a feeling things will work out. 🤷‍♂️
Well.....there are worse songs to get stuck in my head while at work.

After all the hyperbole last summer from Underwood about how much talent the team had, how athletic the guys were and how many NBA guys we had, I thought maybe we would go undefeated. That didn't work out real well. Is this team better than last year? With the current roster? We have a point guard that said he could only play right now against someone with my skill level and a bunch of guys that have never played together.

I'm putting us down for 1 loss this year. I'm lowering my expectations.

We're still in a weird spot where if a Point Guard were to magically appear, the team looks pretty solid for next season and potentially a top 3 preseason Big Ten team (Purdue and MSU are way in front). But without one, it looks like a team that will struggle to generate consistent offense and that might scratch to get into the Tournament field similar to last year.

Not sure where to put this, but it’s Illini :illinois: day on BTN. The IL FB win over Nebraska is being replayed on BTN 60 in 60 right now. Next up @4:30 is the 2011 IL FB Classic-IL win over UCLA, then 2010 IL win over Baylor, then 2022 IL BB win over Texas, then @7:30 2005 IL BB over NC, then @8:30 the Nick Anderson story, then @9:00 the 1989 IL win over Indiana… Enjoy.

Yes. I forgot that Illinois beat North Carolina in Chapel Hill seven months later. Still does not take away the sting from April of that year.

I would rather replace that game on BTN with 2005 IL BB over AZ in Rosemont. Can never get enough of that comeback.

As explained in the basketball thread, we beat UNC in Chapel Hill in the Big Ten / ACC Challenge the following season in late 2005.

I made the same comment (mistake) - this is apparently the win in Chapel Hill the next season (November)

When doesn't Underwood use hyperbole?

Hyperbole is a useful vehicle used to set a high bar and standard for something with the implied expectation that such a standard will be met or even surpassed.
It forces the person being challenged to dig down deep and find it within themselves to achieve what is expected from them. It is breaking somebody out of their comfort level or introducing them to something better that the challenged person has not yet acknowledged they have inside.

E-L-I-T-E might be small in letters. But what's behind those words is powerful. Coach knows what he's doing.

That might work with players. But for fans that pay attention, most will just discount (substantially) everything he says.

Experiences differ. I've found that managers (people, product, etc.) who use hyperbole often get tuned out as BS artists, and then get sidelined for being ineffective.
