IMHO we should be rooting for the 9th man to be so good that we can't keep him on the bench.
If #9thman is that good then they won't be #9thman anymore
IMHO we should be rooting for the 9th man to be so good that we can't keep him on the bench.
You won't be saying that when we need someone to hit a three pointer at the end of a blowout so we can all have chicken nuggets. This 9th man stuff is such a nothingburger to me. It blows my mind that it has consumed this much talk in here. I guess we need something to talk about since the remaining 99% of the offseason hit the best case scenario.
I just don’t understand why people keep throwing shade on MP. And so, I keep dragging out the following. That guy passed the eye test from a height, explosiveness standpoint, but was completely lost, even in mop up duty. Being lost is what kept Petro off the floor. He got out there and was a chicken with his head cut off.
A lot of what we do is read, react and is pretty cerebral and definitely effort based. If you don't want to find a body to box out and hit the glass....you won't see the floor. He didn't seem overly keen on participating, whatsoever, in the paint. He was 6'10"/6'11" and wanted to park behind the three point line.
I'm not saying, by ANY MEANS, that the kid was dumb, but he shouldn't have been that lost. He wasn't a wide-eyed true freshman. The fact that it came out that his teammates were frustrated enough to bring it up says a lot.
What happened to our 28 games appeared in settlement? I thought if Zens hits that bar, we’d collectively rule our #9thMan season a success.
Really any player in limited minutes is likely to get misjudged. Same with Lee.I just don’t understand why people keep throwing shade on MP. And so, I keep dragging out the following.
I think he made a bad first impression in the first one or two games in the non-conference schedule, and that has stuck with a lot of people. You know what they say about bad first impressions. Sure, he had some rough minutes, but I think that has more to do with just not getting enough practice time with the team and not getting enough minutes on the court in actual games. I suspect the first game or two, he was nervous and wanted to make a good impression, and just tried too hard.
If KW had gone to Minnesota or anywhere else, MP would have been the Illinois PG, and I think he would have been a good one. I see him as “good” Curbello. A pure PG. It seems people forget a couple (or a few) games where he played really well that people, even sports writers via twitter, got excited. For instance, after the UTRGV game (I think, it’s been a while):
Dariush Takhtehchian, M.D
@takhtehchianmd
22-year-old Mihailo Petrovic. As advertised. Already has 12 pts, 3 dimes, 2 boards in 12 minutes
Someone here posted, "I need more Mihailo."
And another: I'll go out on a limb here and say we got a good one in Petrovic.
Really good, really quick.
And there were a few other similar posts.
And if I remember correctly, he played well against Southern U. It wasn’t just at garbage time. I think it was in the first half. MP took over the PG duties, and KW played wing. Worked pretty well, but then, Southern was not much competition. The point is, he has played well when he gets significant minutes.
And one other thing: MP is/was 22, he played PG in a Euro League that, I believe, is pretty on par with the Big Ten. At least, it was a pro league. Do you think the Illini staff did not have confidence that he could handle PG duties in the Big Ten?
He definitely did not play like a chicken with its head cut off.
Except he didn’t look quick in real life. And small (petro)Really any player in limited minutes is likely to get misjudged. Same with Lee.
I suspect that the original evaluation of Petro will prove to be more accurate than what we saw in limited exposure. He's going to be successful.
I
Yes that’s a fine bar. All of our 9th men over the years have reached it (sans Petro). What happened to our 28 games appeared in settlement? I thought if Zens hits that bar, we’d collectively rule our #9thMan season a success.
There’s just no reason to try and expand his game because there’s so much value in what he already provides. There's been a lot of conversation about Mirk, Stoj, Vaaks, QC, and the steps they will take ahead of the season...
I think one of the players I'm most excited to see next year is Jake Davis. If he can make another jump defensively as he did from Y1 to Y2, it seems like he could be potentially the best 3 and D guy in the county. He was already the most efficient offensive player in KP last year (among all players at all usage rates), if he can add some strength and quickness, I bet he'll be one of our elite perimeter defenders.
There also needs to be a redemption arc for Jake Davis wig night; hopefully they run it back against Wisconsin at home this year...
So he became the #1stMan.Last year our ninth man became an all American
At his size, I think he (like DGL) really only has a spot if they are highly efficient offensively to make up for defensive and rebounding downsides. Folks point to some of his turnover issues for why he wasn't seeing the floor, but I think he was also out of position defensively a significant amount of the time. If guys like him, DGL, and Lee can't be solid-to-good defenders, then there are simply too many good options offensively for them to see the floor much, in our system.Really any player in limited minutes is likely to get misjudged. Same with Lee.

Yeah I wasn't arguing that his game should be expanded, just saying that he can be the best in the country at what he does, and I'm excited to see his progression as this kind of player. There’s just no reason to try and expand his game because there’s so much value in what he already provides.

Petro wasn’t a #9thman as we view the position now. He was a top 5 man with either Mirk or Wagler being the #9thman.Yes that’s a fine bar. All of our 9th men over the years have reached it (sans Petro).
Whether Brown or Zens can gain that trust as well is the question, which is TBD.
He couldn’t get on the court at all because he’s a defensive liability, rebounding liability, and not a good shooter.Really any player in limited minutes is likely to get misjudged. Same with Lee.

He ended up being the 9th man.Petro wasn’t a #9thman as we view the position now. He was a top 5 man with either Mirk or Wagler being the #9thman.
Not true, and how not true it is depends on how you define 9th man.Yes that’s a fine bar. All of our 9th men over the years have reached it (sans Petro).
Whether Brown or Zens can gain that trust as well is the question, which is TBD.
IMHO we should be rooting for the 10th man to be so good that we can't keep him on the bench.

IMHO we should be rooting for the 11th man to be so good that we can't keep him on the bench.
Yep, just continue to get better at what he already does. There’s just no reason to try and expand his game because there’s so much value in what he already provides.
2021 definitely counts. Coleman played in 25/31 games which is 81%. We just had less games that year due to COVID.Not true, and how not true it is depends on how you define 9th man.
2020 - Verdict: Not true
- 9th in games played - Jermaine Hamlin - 16 games
- 9th in total minutes Tevian Jones - 14 games
- 9th in mpg - BBV - 9 games
2021- Coleman Hawkins - 25 games - Verdict: Not True
2022 - Verdict: Likely True but somewhat ambiguous
- 9th in games played - BBV - 25 games
- 9th in mpg - Luke Goode - 28 games
- 9th in total minutes - Omar Payne - 32 games
2023 - Verdict: Not True but somewhat ambiguous
- 9th in games played was Brandon Lieb at 16
- 9th in total minutes played was Skyy Clark who played in 13 games
- You will likely argue Ty or Sencire as 9th man, but after Skyy leaving and Goode's injury, there was unambiguously a 8-man rotation with Brandon Lieb as the 9th man
2024 - DGL - 28 games - Verdict: True
2025 - Jake Davis - Verdict: True
2026, MP, which you mentione - Verdict: Not True
So I mean really we're talking about maybe 3/7 seasons where there has been a 9th man who has played in 28 games. And then, I mean, look at some of the guys on this list. Omar Payne playing in 32 games? How "playable" was Omar Payne? I don't remember breathing a sigh of relief when he checked in.
OK let's say this happens and then we run out a 9-man rotation. Here's my prediction for the chatter next offseason:
And then when we run out a 10-man rotation, the next offseason we're going to see:
And on, and on. I mean here's the thing. There are only so many minutes to be had. Your 8th best player is better than your 9th best player, and your 7th best player is better than your 8th best player, and so on. Every minute you give the 9th man because he's "so good" is a minute you take away from a player who is even better. This is why you see NBA rosters, where you have 40 additional minutes to allocate to players due to the longer game time and where you play more than double the number of games a college team plays, still often run 9-10 man rotations in the regular season and shorten those to 8-man rotations come playoff time, even though the #15 player on their roster would be a surefire starter in any other league in the world.
2021 definitely counts. Coleman played in 25/31 games which is 81%. We just had less games that year due to COVID.
2023 - Skyy leaving and Goode injury was at separate times. When Skyy played we didn’t have Goode. When Goode played we didn’t have Skyy. For most of the year we played 9 deep.
So wait, you aren’t concerned about whether or not Zavier Zens is good enough to come into a game for 4 minutes and go 0-1 from the field?# of games appeared in means nothing, honestly
Certainly not worth your incessant haggling over it
