was interesting to me that by end of season, Ty and Sencire seemed to most clearly embody the culture we've see in recent years (hard nosed, high effort, defense minded). MM didnt click, TSJ and CH seemed a bit shell shocked in figuring out how to lead the team and/or trying to individually carry too much of the load, RJ was struggling, Goode was sidelined, Skyy and Epps- well we know how that played out

we have a much better foundation to build on for 23-24

Those would be player of the century type numbers in the modern era, let alone from a guy that isn’t a traditional post player.

I love orange kool aid as much as the next person, but you’re throwing down a keg whilst wearing the organgiest of orange aviators.
True. That said, his offensive rebounding percentage as a freshman was 154th in the nation, and he's not a 5. And for reference, once he got used to college play, his OR% in conference, was at Kofi's average level and ~50th in the nation. He's rated the 3rd best offensive rebounder in conference behind Edey and Key. Again, as a freshman. As such, I think his rebounding ability in my opinion gives him an opportunity few have to get a lot of effort stats. While 15ppg and 7rpg while playing 30min is more attainable for him with the addition of a jumper and improved free throw shooting, I think based on his skill set he has a unique opportunity to consistently average about 8ppg and 4rpg off of offensive rebounds alone. That said, orange tinted glasses for sure, but from a metric standpoint, when your in conference offensive rebounding comparables are averaging about 16.6ppg and 10.2rpg, I think his path to becoming an elite rebounder and scorer is actually a lot clearer than it seems if he can pick up a consistent short jumper.

Thank you for looking up the metrics. I’m not discounting Ty as an elite rebounder for his size or position, he’s tenacious.

But we’d be staring at a NPOY candidate should Ty come anywhere close to averaging a double-double over the course of their career. And to this vision, I am not opposed, but boy is it bright orange in here.

JMO, but I think the corporate name turns a lot of people off, in this regard (national perception). Sounds softer rather than tougher, and certainly less historic / nostalgic. The name was bought rather than earned, etc.

The majority of Big Ten arenas are still named after people, not companies, with several named for ADs or coaches. And even if some of those people were big-business types or power brokers (i.e. Kohl Center named after a US senator / donor), to me a single name resonates better the a corporate one.

And us stinking for so many years is tough to overcome too, will take sustained success.
True that on the name (and general look). I think we have one of the coolest arenas in the conference precisely because it kept some of AH's historic aspects while updating it to be very nice, but that probably also prevents us from being associated with the "best of the best" in either category - such as IU's old dumb of an Assembly Hall being undoubtedly "classic," and Nebraska's new state-of-the-art arena being undoubtedly "nice."

I will say, though, that we have had a very good record at home the last several years:

2019-20: 15-3 (8-2 Big Ten)
2020-21: [Skipping because there were no fans]
2021-22: 13-3 (8-2 Big Ten)
2022-23: 15-2 (8-2 Big Ten)

One thing I wish they would do is allow more students to go all the way up to the bottom of the luxury suites to make them look taller/more imposing, but I know that will never happen.

WRT Mackey vs SFC, I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that students make up a much larger percentage of the crowd at Mackey. Illinois students get 3k of SFC's 15,500 seats (and 1,800 of those are in the 200 level). While Purdue reserves 10 of their 26 sections for students. So something like 19% of SFC is students and 38% of Mackey is students.

Want a rowdier environment at SFC? Easy - Add more student seating. Also keep winning.

One amazing thing about this, is that based on the kenpom home court advantage and reffing metrics, we've actually compiled that record with the 3rd worst ref home cooking and 3rd worst overall home court advantage in the B10 over that timeframe. So pretty impressive stuff.

Agree, and makes sense based on what we have witnessed while watching the games. Good to see the metrics back up what we feel has been a clear lack of advantage other teams enjoy.

Luke wants your number,, He said something about setting the record straight. Said he did not like sitting the bench last season as much as playing and ready to take on the role of being who he needs to become in order to have Illinois succeed. He, Buck and Ty just waiting to explode for next year.

Sorry, should've specified - realistic ceiling.

and this is probably the only time writing Illini showing up on my timeline will be relevant...
but they just posted ty rodgers stats for the last 12 games: 22.7 min 5.4p/5.4r/1.2a
could definitely see some improvement being a year older

Have zero doubts that Goode is and will continue to be a culture guy but he didn't see the court enough to make his presence felt (though I'm sure it mattered in practices throughout the year).

Very excited to see a full season of Goode

Was there any truth to rumors? Reading this made it sound worse than I perceived it (but I’m no insider). Glad he’s sticking with us.

Rees Woodcock is about as unreliable a news source as they come. He doesn't really have any connections and just posts wild speculation/clickbait articles.
