Wow, that's really surprising. Seemed (at least publicly) that he was doing a good job. Wonder what happened, was hoping to see continuity in most areas

Given his role as coordinator, it shouldn't effect relationships with recruits directly. Maybe someone with a higher profile has become available?

Interesting move. After reading up on how well things were going, I was surprised to see this.

Yeah, it wouldn't affect that as much, just day-to-day ops, but that all still matters. Just a strange change from my not-clued-in-at-all, perspective. I trust Lovie to build it, just not sure what spurred this move. We'll find out soon enough, I'm sure

IIRC he was a "continuity holdover" from Cubits staff. Assuming that Lovie is reasonably organized the surprise should be that he didn't have his next position lined up.

He joined the staff in the spring of 2016.

He was a Lovie hire, but the late-ness of the hire is certainly a potential factor. We'll see what direction he goes with both of these hires, should be interesting.

When does the 10th assistant for FBS teams come into effect?

Sternquist was hired by Lovie. You might be thinking of Pat Embleton, he was a holdover.

April/May, if it gets NCAA approval.

The timing of this makes me wonder if something happened. Will be interesting to see what Lovie says at Friday's press conference.

Could this be why?

Previously at Illinois, these duties have been left to an assistant. But a burgeoning budget from athletic director Josh Whitman allowed Smith to expand the Illinois staff and recruiting department.

...maybe McGarigle's replacement will demand a much bigger salary?

I'm wondering if he was involved in the EStL dust up Title mentioned but gave us no details.

If it wasn't already apparent on account of numbers/balance, Lovie said at presser the replacement to McGarigle will be a defensive guy. Also said that guy has to be a good recruiter.

#illini Lovie: In the process of hiring someone right now. Should be in place by spring ball. Will fill a defensive position.

You think Donnie Abraham? he has a couple of Illinois things on his twitter. He is a coach at IMG in Florida.

If he's at IMG then we know he's a great recruiter. This would really open the door for a possible pipeline there.
