How is Declan Duley looking and chance he could beat out Robertson? Robertson was shaky at times last season and last in league in punting average.

Time possession kept us in a ton of games last season. The running clock with a 1st down might be to our advantage :sneaky:

Lose at Kansas -- seriously they had 1/2 a good season
8-4 would be fantastic - have to steal a road win at Maryland, Minnesota or Iowa
Although he missed some games last year, Kansas has a pretty good Q.B. coming back.

Look, we will be a top 25 team and they will be lucky to crack the top 50. They nearly gave up 500 yards a game!!!! I believe our offense will be vastly better and our D will be similar to last year as our front 7 will be beasts. KU will not beat us. We will be 2-0 going into the home game against PSU which I believe we will win.

Yeah I'm with you. If overly pessimistic, so be it, but the talent that moved on to the NFL was immense. We could have the best coaching in world (and do we, with Walters gone - but love Henry) and still have a major drop-off.

Why do you believe the offense will be significantly better (serious question - not picking an argument/fight).

From my vantage point, we lost a RB that was top 3 in the country, and a QB who was good enough to still get an undrafted NFL invite. We also lost a 5 year Oline starter also invited to the NFL….we updated the roster with a QB that has some talent but hasn’t played.

Our receivers wil be better and deeper. The three headed monster of Another year under Lunney. I think we will be better at QB and are deeper at QB. Our line is better. Plus I believe the clock rule will help us. Granted we do not have Brown at RB but we are more versatile. I can see us throwing more to the backs and see more play action. We averaged 23 a game last year and I can see us getting closer to 30. I do not think you were picking a fight. Your point is well taken.

I'd be shocked and ecstatic if we can average 28 points per game.
It so very dependent on the QB play, which is so very much up in the air. A record of 7-5 or maybe 8-4 is really what I'm hoping for next year
Two years of 7+ wins (i.e., being easily bowl eligible going into the NU game) is essential for changing the narrative on our program!

Like I have said, I think we can get to 30 with the schedule we have. Another year of Lunney running the show, our players are more adjusted to what needs to be done. Altmyer will have more weapons to throw to and he seems like he looked very good at the scrimmage. Our running game will be different but will have more options. A lot more play action. The line is bigger and more experienced. I think we will control the ball longer. Finally, our D will create opportunities so the offense will get back on the field. Toledo, KU anf FAU have subpar D‘S. I see us winning no less than 9 games and a solid bowl.

Our running game will have two "starters" who have less combined career snaps than Chase had in 2022 alone.

Not saying they won't step up but it's a definite concern. I love me some optimism but I think I would be happy with 8 wins, even if the 8th win is a bowl. I don't see us winning 9 games unless the 9th is a bowl.

I get what you are saying and your point is valid. But we will be in year 2 of Lunney and a more experienced OL. I would think that our line will create more opportunities for our backs to succeed. One other thing, teams schemed to shut down Brown. They ran 8 in the box. I doubt teams will do that against us this year as our receivers are more experienced. We will spread defenses out which will create more running lanes. One more thing, We will win all three non conference games. Purdue is overhauling, NW is bad. Iowa lost a lot off their D and will not be as good as last year. Nebraska is not very good, IU is not very good. Maryland is not as good as they lost a lot from a very average team. Can we beat Minny, Wisc or PSU? We should win at least 1. So getting to 9 wins without having to play Mich, OSU or MSU may not be hard to get to. We could win the West. Last year we were learning how to win. This year we take another step in that direction.

I hear ya. I agree there will be a dropoff in the secondary. I just don't think we go from great to pathetic. I think we go from great to pretty good.

Plus, we're all entitled to a bit of irrational offseason optimism, something which I rarely experience personally! :)

What are realistic expectations for the team this season?
Speaking only for myself , my expectations for this season are 7-5 with another Bowl game.......I sure hope BB and staff can transition this season's performance into better recruiting , especially with 4 Illini drafted and numerous others getting free agent contracts and invites to training camps........

This is the best feeling I have had about Illini FB in many many years............We are in good hands with BB and staff.......

LETS GO ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How I see it, it's all going to depend on Altmyer and our o-line plays. Our D-Line will be absolutely ferocious and that will cover up a lot of ills with regards to coverage if we even have them. Our special teams are getting a major improvement as well. So the question is can we get solid blocking for our RBs and Altmyer clean in the pocket and can Altmyer deliver an accurate ball. I personally am pretty optimistic about this and think we're going to have a special year. I'll take us for 9-3 and a spot in the B10 Championship game. And while there is a world where we lose 2 or even all 3 of our first 3 games, I think there's also a world where we're 5-0 heading into the Friday night matchup against Nebraska and a B10 title game against say Michigan with a spot in the CFP on the line. And wouldn't that be a sight to see?

realistically, we lost 4/5 of our strongest unit last season (DBs), 2 OL in NFL camps, our best QB we've had in a decade, the national leader in P5 Rush yards, and some other starters....7-5 should be a pretty realistic goal with this schedule

with that said, BIG 10 CHAMPS BABY!!!!!

i think we are going to see and slightly different defense. not all the time, but less man to man coverages, more run/pass
blitzing and stunts from a softer zone coverage. this defensive backfield will be good to average and the front 6/7 will
have to step up. good against the run, force 3rd and long and hit the QB. teams that throw on first down (not typically
the big ten) could gash us.

I don’t know much about football schematics, but I do know a great defensive line, like the one we have, makes your defense better, and allows you to do a little more than you could normally do.

If we also find the next ball hawking safety for our system, I think it opens up the man-cover 1 stuff we’ve been doing. In theory the d line doesn’t let the qb have enough time to throw deep, and you can leverage to take away the preferred quick routes the opponent uses, so the corners don’t have to cover as long.

My personal favorite coverage is cover 4, so from a selfish standpoint with absolutely no basis on our personnel, it’d be cool to see us be successful with that if we move to zone looks.

I know we lost a TON of talent to the NFL. We also said the same things the last 2 offseasons. First it was "who is gonna replace Hobbs". Then it was "nobody is gonna be able to replace Joseph", and Tolson, Carney, etc. My point is every year players have stepped up and filled roles better than we expected. I think we were used to seeing no progress out of a lot of our players. Im excited to see who steps up this next season. Who is gonna be our next All American? Pat Bryant? Taz Nicholson, Kaden Feagin? We got coaches that are getting the best out of these young men. Exciting times!
