Illini Golfers in the Pros

#126
With the Belgium boys off and D.A. toiling in mediocrity(hoping he makes the cut) the action is on the lower tours. Edoardo Lipparelli got a start on the Challenge Tour this week albeit had a rough 1st round at +4. Not sure if he has full status on that tour he is playing on a qualification through the Alps tour, none the less should be an important round for him today. Campbell and Guthrie both struggled on the back 9 and are +2 now, They are both in the position at this point where they have to pull a win out of the hat to get in the mix for the top 25.

Hardy on the other hand continues to show his game. That -6 he had yesterday was bogey free. That is a player in control of his game. Disappointing final round last time out but that was coming from 20th heading into the final day. Lets see if he can entering the weekend from the front and see what he can do.

Detry and Pieters are both +4 after day one. Pieters was even at the turn but a double 10 on and a triple on 15 did him in.

Stricker as well. Projected cut line as of now is +2 or better, so all three have some work to do today.

Pieters +9 after 15 today. Currently T144 with John Daly at +13 for the tournament. Yikes.

Ouch! Projected cut line has moved to +4 or better.

Stricker (in the clubhouse +3) appears to be safe for weekend play, and Detry (sitting at +5 through 10) will need to finish strong.

Quick update on the pros, because all eyes are on the college game right now, Detry is doing his usual make the cut but make way too many bogeys and others only to counteract a boatload of birdies, head off to the next week with a paycheck. Speaking of paychecks, D.A. is gonna get one this week but man is struggling, only his second cut of the year.

On the Korn Ferry some good action, Nick with a great back 9 to keep his second place position. 4 off the lead so an uphill battle but another high finish is looking more and more likely. This could seal his card. Getting in to the top 10 at this point after two seasons of events seems like an insurmountable gap to 25th for him to fall out. Campbell is having a decent weak but needs an ultralow round today to get anything major out of this tourney. Guthrie is having his best effort in a while but also needs to go low, and then put it on repeat for a couple months. Really both those guys need a win to get anywhere near the top 25.

All the Illini are in neutral or in reverse today. Stricker in full collapse mode on the Senior Tour. Lot of guys going very low on Korn Ferry Tour course, but Hardy stuck at even par and Guthrie and Campbell about the same. They all need to rally and finish strong. Thought this might be the week Hardy got his 1st win.

Congratulations Dylan! Feel bad for Hardy and Feagles, they were so close. Hardy was tied for fourth when I checked yesterday, faultered down the last nine holes. He has still had a great year on the Korn Ferry tour, hope he gets his tour card!

Congrats to Dylan as well.
Perversely, missing the open could be good for Nick, as there is no Korn Ferry credit for playing in the open. That's one more week that he can earn points on the KF to stay to 25 and get a tour card.

Seems like that should be reviewed for a change

I think Thomas Detry earned an exemption. He and Dylan appear to be the only Illini. No Pieters?

Anyone know why Feagles entered as an amateur? Would have thought he would have turned pro right away. Big amateur event coming up that he is saving amateur status for?

I thought he qualified based on his play on the European tour over the most recent 5-6 weeks. This as there is no qualifying sure in Europe this year. My understanding anyway.
I am pretty sure Pieters did not qualify, His form has not been great so far this year, Only 1 top 10 on the year.,

You are correct. I saw his name on an oddsmaker's list and assumed he was playing. You're right again, he hasn't been playing well.

Go Dylan and Thomas!

I would think the US Amateur would be on the agenda. He will try to qualify for either the Tour or the Korn Ferry this winter.

I looked at his Instagram page and he just turned pro. He probably had to play in an earlier qualifier when he was still an amateur. Either way, time to go make some dough on the Forme Tour.

only Campbell and Hardy are playing golf this Sunday. Campbell has had a couple of nice 65s sandwich an even par 71, but he needs to go lower then a 65 today to get a high finish and kick his late season push. Its a tall order but glimpses of good form have peaked through.

Hardy on the other hand is in line for another top 5 finish, currently solo third and 5 strokes back of the lead. A sparkling two day stretch of 63-64 has catapulted him up the leaderboard. Nick has been absolutely incredible during this wrap around season. No wins, No 2nds, 1 third and he is locked into the top 25. He has had 18 top 25s out of the 32 tournaments. Over half the time he tees it up he is in the top 25. After today he will most likely have his tenth top 10. So much consistent quality play is really unique and he is going to be a money maker on the PGA tour with this form., Can't wait to follow him going forward.
