Wow. What a quick turnaround it has been. Amazing. Maybe they'll be ranked next week? When's the last time that happened?
That’s a good question. I have no idea, but it’s been a long long time. Rutgers is not great, but Indiana was a very strong performance. I don’t know the power teams on the womens side, but I know the talk early was we may not have the size to hang with some of the bigger teams. They don’t show any fear tho. I think making the tourney is within reach.

The next chance to watch without a B10+ subscription is the 18th on SEC vs Missouri.

I think they're still a few wins away from getting the attention of AP voters for the top 25 rankings. Despite currently being in the NET top 20, they don't have a win against a team currently favored to make the NCAA tournament. They'll get 2 chances next week against bubble teams in tough environments, but as is, an expected win against a bottom-tier B1G team and a close loss against a top tier B1G team only really gets them in the conversation for sneaking into the top 10 in the conference.

Legit question: How has this improvement happened this quickly? I haven't followed the team other than knowing they lost a lot last year, got a new coach, and have won a lot more this year.

Is it all coaching? Did they get some players to transfer in that are studs and have carried the team?

This quick of a turnaround just doesn't seem possible.

Coaching and a few Dayton players that transferred in with Coach.

2012-2013 last season they had a winning record and also winning conference record (9-7)

2002-2003 last season they had a winning record, winning conference record (9-7) and made the NCAA tournament

Post Theresa Grentz as coach they have had some rough years. Last 7 seasons they have a 60-142 record and conference record of 12-106. Shauna Green looks like a Homerun hire with what she has done this early with the program. Most wins in one season in those last 7 seasons I believe is 11. Currently sitting at 8-2 and 1-1 in the conference is a dream. There are 5 Big Ten teams in the top 25 and we aren't close to cracking the top 25 or making the tourney of now.

Illinois has a 4 star recruit in Cori Allen coming in next season that should be real good. Green brought some players from Dayton with her to speed things along. Main thing is upgrading the talent, next would be to add talent with size.

Question for those much more knowledgeable about team: what’s the breakdown of contributors as far as transfers, freshmen and holdovers?
Not knowledgeable, but curious about their success so looked it up. Here is a quick breakdown. (I only noted transfers if this is their 1st year as an Illini). Those in blue bolded text are starters, those in black bolded text have been the players off the bench the past 2 games.

I was in attendance last night. This team has good ball handling skills, good speed, and better than good shooters.
They seem willing to do the physical stuff around the rim too. My first game in many years, and I will go back.
I encourage y'all to jump on the band wagon so wins and recruiting will be made sooner rather than later.

Fingers crossed that she is the one to turn around our program. It won't be easy, but I believe Josh Whitman will give her the resources needed to succeed.
A lot of transfers have come in. Wonder if there was any NIL money involved with that?

Whitman has had some hit and miss hires but has really hit over the fences lately. Underwood, BB and Green are coaches you want at this school until they retire.

I am not going to say one bad thing about Theresa Grentz. The women's program was in shambles before she arrived and after she left. She led us to 5 NCAA and 5 NIT tournaments in 12 seasons. Some of those NIT appearances are when the team was 17-16 and 15-14 for example. Grentz was an established coach at Rutgers before joining the Illini.

My hope is that Green will stay at Illinois as a destination school and establish a new norm for this program. Besides Grentz, there hasn't been much of a footprint left on this program.

I looked at early projections for the tournament and Illinois is not anywhere to be seen(it can change). Sure it is mostly based on being in smaller conferences since they had them listed as aq(automatic qualifiers) but they projected Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois and UIC-Chicago to be in the tournament. First goal is to make Illinois the brand of the state in women's bball. Green was pretty aggressive bringing in bodies when she got hired. I think Illinois will outperform their talent level on the roster this season....just not sure what that will be yet.

She has a second 4 star (in some rankings) committed in Gretchen Dolan. Like Allen, she is a tall (5'11") guard out of New York. Her mother and sister both play(ed) at Canisius, like Green did. Stat line last year: 38.4 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 4.0 APG, 5 SPG, 2 BPG.

Unless the portal hits us, we lose very little next year. Only Peebles (senior) and Lopes (Grad. student) are likely gone. There are only 13 players on the current roster so we can add two more to next year's class for sure. Need some beef with skills.

@Illinigirl & @GILL-INOIS, thanks for the helpful info.

I last lived in CU during the Grentz era, and quite to my surprise I fell in love with the program. I think I still had season tickets when I left town, but I had real concerns about what was going on under Grentz. Didn't Catchings even end up leaving? I'm almost afraid to know what was happening. I want players who love playing at Illinois.

Yeah knew Dolan was good but didn't realize she was ranked so high. Nice!!!

This team is real young...love the chemistry and vibe of it

Don't quote me on exact number but there were 4-6 that quit the team or transferred out. Grentz was seeking an extension and that definitely didn't happen. Talk of slander lawsuits against Grentz. It was not pretty.....

Grentz had some talent in those early years and think years 2-5 is where they made some more noise. Other than Grentz there isn't anyone notable that has done much with this program. Hopefully we have found that "one" coach that will be here awhile and build up this program.

Grentz had more success with the program than anyone else, by far. At Rutgers, she was the last coach to win a national championship in the AIAW before the NCAA took over the women's tournament. I always felt that was more that just a neat piece of trivia, but a reflection of how she was from a different era of the sport, which worked in some "old school" ways, but also led to some unfortunate lapses and eventually a troubling disconnect with her players.

More Theresa Grentz trivia: It's not Citizen Kane, but she (then Theresa Shank) was a star player on the team at tiny Immaculata College in Philly that was the subject of the film, "The Mighty Macs." Kind of a fun, upbeat sports movie with Carla Gugino as Coach Cathy Rush, especially if you have a daughter who plays hoops. That team (which also included longtime Penn State coach Rene Portland) was an incredibly unlikely early women's college basketball power, playing in a unique environment that's never really been matched.
