Can someone sum up the interview?

He kind of stammered around the direct questions. He also tossed in a couple of shameless plugs for the success of spring sports with didn't sit well with some. Pretty much all he said in the end was that the protection and care for student athletes was their primar concern.

He wasn't particularly eloquent or well spoken which isn't his norm.

I did t hear it, but that sounds about what you'd expect. For legal reasons, he will not make any substantive comment. He absolutely should play up the spring sport success.

I give him credit for being available as long as he doesn't shoot himself in the foot.

I didn't hear the interview myself but, a couple of friends who are casual Illini fans commented to me that he didn't sound good in the interview. Mostly dodged the questions.

I understand he may be limited in what he can say but, seems this isn't playing well to the public.

Somehow, I picture the University's strategy is summed up in a memo like this:

People don't care about this stuff, especially in light of the amazing success we've had on the field this spring. Besides, what public outlets exist for these students and their families to express their concerns in a way that would damage the school's image?

A pretty good strategy....if this were 1982.

The whole spring sport thing is such a lame cop-out. Thomas has little to nothing to do with the awesome success those teams have had, as he didn't hire Hartleb, Dancer or Small.

The 7 former #Illini women's basketball players coming forward in latest letter: Grant, Tuck, Gleason, Coleman, Smith, Livingston, Oden.

What is the damn hold up, Mike Thomas?

Just keeps getting worse. Was 3 players, now 7?

Even if these coaches and AD don't get canned, will they recover enough from the PR damage to be even remotely effective??

now its 7 players and phyllis wise dodged the problem for 6 weeks. now at least we get rid of her sorry !!! too. Come on BOT's make a statement and wipe them all out. should we wait until all the law suits are out in the public?

this is embarrassing to us as alumni. if the head chopping doesn't start soon
there will be 10,000 a game come this fall.

I'm confused. 10,000 a game? If that was the case, Illinois women's bball would have some of the best attendance in the B1G Ten.

He's not taking credit it for it, he's just trying to point out some positive results for the athletic program when he has the opportunity. As he should. It's part of his job.

BTW, I wonder how many of the Guenther haters are giving him credit for the hires you mentioned?

I really do think Bollant is a good guy and probably a pretty good coach, but what will bring him down in the end is his loyalty to that lunatic Divilbiss. Apparently it was a "good cop-bad cop" situation that he allowed under his watch, which is totally moronic. Coach basketball while developing the athletes as players and young women. Don't screw with their heads and lives.

Was happy with the Bollant hiring, his record coming in, was great. It is now VERY obvious he needs to go. Going to be some sad years for women's B Ball, not that they've been great, or decent lately.

I had heard that a number of the players didn't like how stern he was. Is that the reason he's being let go? It seems like the program took a step back this season

He has a history of abusing players. Its an embarrassment that he was ever hired.

IF that is the case, someone (did they use a search firm and was that under their scope of work?) dropped the ball or ignored the information. Obviously not good either way.

That said, IF it is true, this is the kind of thing that comes up informally during a search. Having done a lot of hiring over the years (non athletic), there are ways for this type of information to surface through back channels.

This has turned into a complete train wreck for the athletic dept and the university.

and he hasn't even done very much winning here.
not that winning would excuse everything, but it would be the one defensible position for keeping this guy.
what a disaster.

Of all times for this to happen, this has to be the worst with all the other race issues going on right now.
