What are you smoking?

He's almost 30 years old, a full time assistant coach on a P5 staff making 200,000+ a year lmao he's NOT a kid.
This has been discussed ad nauseam for the past two weeks. He's a problem, but he's also trusted, which is a bigger problem. Did Minnesota make some tough shots last night? Yes. But does that mean our defense is good enough to get us into a deep run in March? I doubt it. "Minnesota made tough shots; Iowa made tough shots..." are just excuses for poor defense. Our defense sucks. Our offense is elite. Let's hope we play some similar teams, get to witness some exciting barn burners in the dance, and pray that we go down as the most elite offense in NCAA tournament history with a defense we forget all about.

We’ve been worrying about our failure to score in the paint and relying on the three, because the three isn’t reliable.

Now we have the paint scoring. And the other team(s) relying on the unreliable three.

I also don’t understand why our driving team should be concerned about their half court defense, and their half court defense not concerned by our driving offense.

Penn State was our basketball 9/11.

With three minutes left and a 14 point lead against Minnesota, I didn’t feel safe. When the Gophers promptly cut it to 11, I thought “uh oh, here we go again.” When they cut it to 6 under 30 I envisioned a million ways we would lose.

But maybe, just maybe the PSU loss could have a silver lining. We weren’t complacent tonight. We took care of business. We got the job done.

Maybe, just maybe we’ll play focused and determined from now through March and — fingers crossed — into April.

Never forget.
Big difference in the PSU game and the Iowa/Minn games is we are at home, made free throws and the refs didn’t swallow their whistles like they did at PSU. Penn State got away with so many fouls at the end of that game!!

I still think Coleman gets all big ten defensive team but he has slipped a bit for sure. He is asked to do a lot.

I am just so surprised why this team isnt good on defense. Coleman and TSJ are clearly plus to elite defenders. I think ty Rodgers is a good defender. And Harmon can be a good defender. Are domask and guerrier that bad? I know they aren't great but the sum is so much less than the parts. Top 50 defense shouldn't be that big a goal. This team should be top 25 imo on defense
The shift defensively seemed to coincide with Terrance's suspension. That's when things started to slip. I think we all thought that they would find the chemistry back defensively once he was reinstated and it just hasn't happened. It is a little baffling and perplexing to everyone.

Is there a way to know what the Kenpom score would be if our defense was even decent - like, say, 50th?

If this team played even decent defense, they would be right up there with Purdue, Houston, and UConn at the top of the pecking order in college basketball.
50th would put our D at and adjusted defensive efficiency of 0.994 pts per possession instead of the 1.024 we're currently at. That would increase our efficiency margin to +26.32 and put us firmly in 7th place overall

That was the least stressful 97 we’ve ever gave up. Tournament committee could have some fun with us having us meet other high powered offenses

I live down in Lexington, I'm forced to watch all the UK games because my wife bleeds blue. That said, anytime they make a deep tourney run they always seem to have a guy on defense who is that dude. The one who makes life miserable for whoever he is guarding, Kidd-Gilchrest, Deandre Liggins type guys. Seems to be a decision......a mentality. I wonder if we have anyone who can make that choice. Trent did it, I think Coleman, Terrance, Harmon could all do it. question is will they.

Also if we end up playing the Cats for some reason this year it may be the highest scoring game in history

Great win. Bench strength helped us win the game. I wondered, how hard did we go after Christie. The kid can shoot. I am sure it was talked about over and over. Beat Wisc on Saturday. I hope State Farm goes nuts against Pu.

What happened to the defense? It was solid early in the season and just kinda vanished lately, they made stops down the stretch when it was needed and any win in the B10 is gold, but these guys know they have to tighten it up better on the defensive side, especially if they have visions of making a long tournament run.

Why so much focus on 3pt percentage only? Teams come in confident they will be able to score on us now and Minnesota put up 97! That fits the narrative perfectly.
It was the original topic of conversation from the game thread. I am in agreement our defense has been awful in most aspects recently. I was not in agreement our 3pt defense had been terrible prior to this game. Simple as that.

4 year student manager, not quite 7 years from a bachelor degree.

Nice try cherry-picking.

A kid.

Also, he’s an assistant. Just like many of us have an assistant. You don’t give an assistant power to make big impactful decisions, you as the leader make them.

This isn’t Brad’s first bad defense either.

"Defensive rating" . . . "Kenpom down to 95" . . ."Defense sucks" . . ."Defense" . . ."Defense" . . . "Defense" . . .

season 6 friends GIF

Metrics describe what happened, and don't matter if the result is a W. Just sayin' . . .

Maybe we are just bluffin' right now on D as Chester would say? Playing with people. On a serious note, we have some good to great Defenders and we have a couple of guys who in my opinion are just not good defensively. Teams are making tough shots off of the dribble and from mid range and deeper. I can handle that. I can't handle the complete lapses that we had at PSU. I haven't seen much of that since. I think Iowa torched us one on BLOB. We give Coleman zero help in the post. I wouldn't mind seeing someone come a little late on a post double. I don't think think most of the bigs in this league can pass that well out of the post when they have started their move.

I have notice this as well, on scramble or broken plays, our opponents never miss the 3. It seems like teams get these alot against us. It's just basketball.

Also, great to see some serious action on our blob plays. Our guys were moving with a purpose.

I don't fault our defense for Minny's treys; they were just shooting out of their minds from distance, with many of those contested. I would be shocked if that wasn't their high water mark on the season. But the glaring problem with our defense (and it's now a habit against other opponents) is in not doubling the post. When one of their big guys (it's not always the same guy) starts that backing down and backing down and backing down. You can't defend the post with one defender playing behind him. You have to come with a hard double immediately. You have to make him pick the ball up and face guard him. Why hasn't Underwood figured that out, I have no clue.

Think they hit 7 or 8 off the dribble….which is an absurdly high number in college.
The one Christie made at about the 3 minute mark was insane. Dribbling to his left and going straight into the shot and nothing but net.. Not sure show was on him but he was right there with him.. Just tip your hat to some excellent shots... I can guarantee that Garcia earned every point he got. Paine is a beast he is Dain with out an offensive game just brute strength
