there are enough people in Champaign and Vermillion county and the counties out to fill that stadium 75% even on down years. We have to better understand the downstate market and their economics. It is plain as day that the Chicago market runs the state, a fool could tell you that before you hit Kankakee driving down I57, everything is behind from the cars to the housing to the clothing being worn to the abundance of chain restaurants that is considered good. Now, when we get good, we can’t alienate a more limited downstate base, but we need to capitalize on the Chicago metro dollars. We need fans in the seats to help sell this thing. And fans that are loud and not told to sit down on 1st and 2nd down.

Is this the reverse of running up the score on a hapless defense? I mean stopping their offense there without a point proves to be meaningless in the scheme of things but it does feel really good. The defense is just amazing.

I'm good with it in a way I would not be with running up the score. The TV announcers pointed out that keeping Virginia out of the end zone on that series mattered to the Illini defense. They earned that opportunity, and they made the most of it. I think that spirit bodes well for our team. And by the way, trying to score mattered to Virginia too, because they brought Armstrong back in for a couple of plays. Illinois ended his streak of 18 straight games with a touchdown pass. After the way Armstrong lit them up last year, I'm sure it felt good.

Offense gives hope to fans. A talented QB distributing the ball to multiple receivers, and an awesome running game. Still plenty of turnover and penalty issues to address, but I expect noticeable improvement there before the B10 schedule gets rolling. Defense is tougher than a $2.00 steak sandwich from a rusty food truck, and will continue to keep us in games. Field goal kicking could lose us some close ones, and is a big concern.

Huh?

Oh, also, I should say the game experience was better too. I’ve been a critic of how stale everything feels at and around memorial stadium before and during games. I can tell they’re definitely trying to improve that. Kudos to Josh Whitman for recognizing and fixing these issues.

Still work to be done, but some of that involves the product on the field. I’m glad he’s working on stuff that can be improved whether we go 12-0 or 0-12.
Just curious- what have they done to make the game day experience better?

Our crowds suck. We are relying on a majority of Chicago metro alum and fans to come and fill our stadium and they certainly are not given our past 10 years plus. Posters have been talking about our crowds and how to fix it. People have been throwing out ideas. Not a hard concept of what I wrote.

Yep even with no Jamal Woods

Just the things like celebrating TDs, the pregame entrance, videos and music during the game (although that’s still a major work in progress). Even something as simple as fireworks. I mean, the 3rd down defense needs more hype. That’s for sure. I was never a fan of the war chant for that reason too.

I don’t know it just felt better today.

Less inconveniences, maybe.

Student tickets should be free until we are a bonafide top half B10 team, no question.

As for the game, we are seeing glimpses of competence, but still habits of a bad, bad program. But it is definitely changing, and that is great. TO's, mental mistakes, yapping after every play, red zone inefficiency have to get corrected. But with our D, this team is must watch and for that I'm ecstatic.

They announced at the game that student tickets are free for Chattanooga at least. It's a start and it's nice to see they've been doing it on occasions when they really want to draw people out. I agree that it needs to happen more often though.
