I'm happy we're winning but. BUT. This is the weakest B1G west in memory. Wisconsin and Iowa are absolute crap this year. the last time we won the B1G with Kittner and Lloyd on offense and our "Attack Defense" in 2001 we went to the Sugar Bowl vs LSU and got run right off the field like we didn't belong there. Which we didn't. Fans calling in to the postgame tonite talking about our "Elite" defense and national champ level coverage ought to remember. We are not SEC caliber football. We just aren't. Enjoy what's happening but don't fool yourselves.

BTW I just want to comment that every time my GF left the room Illinois started playing badly so she was required to remain in the living room during game action. She wandered off when Williams fumbled and came back for the defensive takeaway right after. Also we started dating in June and now it's the best season I've ever seen so far. Coincidence? I don't think so 😍
Marry her tomorrow!

TDV just threw for 91%. What? Who cares that we dinked and dunked. We are 7 and motherloving 1. We have the best defense in the country. Enjoy this.

And if you’re nervous about the lack of explosive plays, Mr. Williams (who I’m happy overcame a silly TO, and made a game sealing first down reception), took one of those drags for a 46 yard touchdown.

Beyond excited to have something that hasn’t happened since my father was alive. Like, truly historic, Kurt Kittner, Walter Young, BLloyd days.

But now it’s the Law Firm, Brown Bros, Walters and the defensive secondary as a whole. They deserve their own name. Do your thing, people.
For sure I enjoyed the win. Just thinking that a deep pass or two might open up the rushing game. To be sure, after near 60 years of being an Illini fan, I am somewhat accustomed to thinking that, not only is the roof going to collapse, but also that the floor will cave in!

I glanced in the game thread and that was a mistake. Nothing but toxic doom and gloom when it was only 9-6. Absolutely no faith in this team or coaching staff.
That is pretty much par for the course for game threads. That and refs are terrible. After reading a game thread, you’ll be pretty certain that refs call every infraction Illini make and some they don’t make while other team gets away with murder on every play.

I think some of my favorite “hot takes” early in the game were: back to the Illini of old; well, we really handed them the game here; Sydney Brown doesn’t have his head in game; and, my favorite, team needs to stop reading its own press clippings.

It’s tough to win in the BIG. And it’s not like this team is chock full of uber-athletic 5* and high 4* players. That’s not a knock on our players. What they do have are guys who have worked hard to develop their talent and put those talents on display while playing hard. That doesn’t mean every play, series or quarter is going to be perfect. What I really like about the game threads is that there are a fair amount of posters who feel the need to post pretty much negative posts during the moments of bad play, and post very little otherwise — including in the game threads when good things happen.

I try to do the opposite: only post when good things happen. I stopped reading the game threads for awhile. Then I changed my mind and felt that maybe I could I inject some positive juju. Not going so well but I'll keep trying .

I’ve stopped reading them during the game, and don’t post too often in them anymore. This game I actually made a handful of posts, but none really negative (maybe better go back and read those posts to make sure that’s true before hitting button on this one).

Am I mistaken or does this team have more speed than we have seen before in an Illini team? Not sure about the athleticism but the offensive line and defensive backs sure have me fooled. Ratings are overrated!

You have been on the Illini rollercoaster for a few years then. 😂

Your patronage is appreciated and commended. I hope to one day reach 60 years of memories, and hopefully with a stretch of success or two.

A fun way to look at TDV 20-22 is by looking at the catch stats. Only Reiman was targeted once that was incomplete. The other incomplete was apparently either a blocked pass or thrown away. Every receiver (other than Reiman) was same catches as targets. It is a very crazy looking stat summary with 100% Catch to Target. I said it before, Lunney calls plays based on 4 down possessions not just 3. It struct me how many 3rd and 4th downs were converted by "just enough". Even when there is a play that is blown up, I have confidence they will do that again and succeed. The only time I was very disappointed was the Indiana first and goal calls when they didn't score.

I call it "doing what we need to do to win." Sorta West Coast Offense-like. 4-6 yards a pop.

The competition is about to start getting tougher (Purdue, Michigan and maybe Ohio State), and we may need to then break out the full-blown passing game.
If tOSU makes it 🤪

I don't know how many members this forum has? If we were to take a poll. How many of us when it was announced Coach Bret Bielema was taking the Head ball coaching position. Would have honestly thought in his 2nd year we may possibly win the West and Could win the Big10 Championship. Ever? Let alone in year 2. It is simply amazing to me, after watching this.program since leaving school in "91". 30+ years of suffering and let downs.
I for one was excited because Coach had gotten those 3 NFL season under his belt. But this season has exceeded my expectations. Just Freaking Awesome! 💯 %
I didn’t expect this but I was in his corner before he was hired and had(have) no doubts he will make us a consistent winner.

A ranked team goes on the road to an unranked opponent, comes out a bit flat, makes some mistakes, but ultimately they just have too much for the unranked home team to beat them without playing a perfect game, which they just aren't up to.

How many times have we watched that exact game in which Illinois was the home team? Awfully nice to have the shoe on the other foot.

We're not going to get to play backup QB's forever and weren't terribly sharp, but we just have a lot of problems we can throw at opponents.

I liked Tom Luginbill's candor where he talked about covering this team in 2018 and 2019 and how terrible we were and how shocking it is to see such a complete team so soon thereafter.

Here’s a few gems from the Husker fan blog:

“This game was the worst of the day, boring, unwatchable.”

(Comment: Illini would call this the best game of the day, thrilling, can’t take my eyes off it...)

“We have a history that Illinois will never ever have in a 100 years.”

(Comment: Unless you are psychic... you have no idea what the Illini will accomplish in the next decades. Also – as far as history goes — have you checked the All-Time basketball rankings lately between the two programs? Does that also count as ‘history’?)

“It is funny how no one wants to admit that what Bret has done at Illinois is exactly what we need.”

(Comment: The Husker faithful have been so hungry for a program turn-around that it’s bitter medicine to see a program that’s done it so quickly. But they are good fans and they deserve better than what they've been getting.)

“If offered the job, Bret would come here in a heartbeat and I hope he brings his defensive coordinator because he makes our defensive coordinator look like a peewee league coordinator.”

(Comment: Looks like we have another ‘psychic’ here. And yes, Bret WILL come to Nebraska in a heartbeat... the next time the Illini are scheduled to play in Lincoln.)

“Illinois earned this one today. Made us look stupid,”

(Comment: The Illini aren’t trying to make anyone look stupid. Just playing to win with class.)

“Impressed with Illinois’ defense.”

(Comment: You just can’t win without a Good ‘D’ to always keep you in games. The Illini will have to develop the passing side to compete with the football blue bloods who will take away the running game.)

“My kid is pissed and wants to go fishing. Think it might be a good idea.”

(Comment: There is almost nothing that fishing doesn’t make better. Unless you just don’t like fish, that is. And you are not a fish yourself.)

The best way to handle the game thread is to treat it like 'Fight Club'.
lol glad you brought up Fight Club because I felt exactly like the main character in that movie during the Indinia game

I think after bonuses this year he will be over 5 mil….then retention bonus plus it bumps his base pay up he will be over 6 next season and it’s well worth it…..he puts in 17-18 hour days
Lots of coaches work hard for a lot less, its just BB wins most of the time.
Agree he is well worth it.

Attened first game in 1967 at 15 years old. Fan since I was 12. Radio only, TV coverage was virtually nil.
At 16 went to work for radio station (where my dad also worked) that carried Illini and Stl Cardinals. Had access to free tickets the station received. Fun times.

A couple comments:

We have a great history but it hasn’t been recent. Nebraska’s is more recent but still over 25 years ago. If you look at their history - outside of Bob Delaney and Osborne it’s been very good but not great.

As to a weak Big Ten West, yes it is, but in past years teams built showy records in wins over weak teams like us. I’d say overall weaker but someone has to be down for someone else to be up.

Brett has two Browns. Now Brad needs to get one of his own.
