Illinois 27, Minnesota 26 Postgame

I stand by what I said the last time we brought this up: LA is a developing quarterback. He needs time to get the decision making down but the raw talent is clearly there. You have him for 2 more years then probably 3 years of Petty. That’s the hope.

You sit Luke on the bench for a grad student who has 3 games of eligibility left on the roster in a losing season you have, at best, pissed off your next two QB’s in the succession plan. For nothing. And you’ve already damaged a bridge with Jacas in the process of all that. Some of that is sunk cost, but some of it is definitely avoided by not just letting it ride to see what Paddock can do.

This was fun. Paddock looked good in three plays, he’s also looked absolutely abysmal in a few. Throwing away the long-term plan for some what ifs is not a good plan.
If we have one final chance to win the Big Ten West by winning the final 3 games (of course we need other teams to lose also), and Paddock gives us the best chance to win with poise in the pocket, I would get him in there. We have fast receivers, and Luke has missed several sure TDs this season.

I get the optimistic talk about winning the West. It's not something I care about. Just get get to 6-6. Get some program momentum, get to a bowl, and hit the portal and the recruiting trail hard after that to get some talent and depth into the program.
This game was a good example to just enjoy each game, don’t set high expectations like winning the west.

Yesterday was an up and down day for me. My local High school lost in the playoffs and i was down about that, then within an hour Illinois came back to beat Minnesota. So, in an hour i went from being really down to feeling pretty good. Weird.

I don't watch much ESPN anymore unless it is a game. Turned on College Football Final and showing the final play of game the guy says Luke Altmyer to Isaiah Williams. Literally show Paddock hugging BB and his name clearly on the jersey afterwards. Back to tuning in for games and SVP.

We don't score a ton of points but BB/Lunney Jr regime are 9-0 when team scores 25+ points.

Interesting way to put it.

You also might say our defense is undefeated when the offense puts up 25.

What a great win, but until Paddock came in and and saved the game like a super hero we were headed for another late game collapse and loss. Maybe this is the big reverse of fortune we needed to to get us over the hump in these types of games. For years the basketball program seemed to always have 6 to 10 games that came down to the wire that we normally lost. This even carried into the first couple of seasons with Brad. Then things changed, we started winning the majority of those games and the program took off. Winning those close games made the difference between winning 10 to 16 games a year to winning 20+. If the football program can do the same we could start reasonably getting 8+ wins a season. It's winning those types of games consistently that can determine whether we have a good season or a bad one.

Or 11-1 during BB's tenure when scoring 25+ points. Tons of ways to word it

Put team points because our offense hasn't scored all the points during those wins when we scored 25+ 😉

Reading a few of the GopherHole posts linked above, a lot of their fans were pretty resigned to the game ending just like this, which is pretty wild given how things appeared to be going at 3 minutes left.

Not defending ESPN as I agree with you, but IIRC the game announcers (also terrible) called the first of the three plays that way, with Altmyer throwing. That combined with no film or replay of Luke's injury let to some confusion even in my living room as to who was the QB.
