Mike LaTulip sums it up very well. 4-1 to start the B1G season...why on earth would you shake up this lineup?
Lol. Exactly. I'm betting that the guy watching this team practice every day, whose livelihood is on the line unless they win consistently, probably has the upper hand in this conversation. Mr. Underwood in the postgame session did not seem deeply concerned about his team. Did he look this relaxed a year ago today? He likes what he's seeing from his boys.

A number of teams lost today, who were ranked ahead of us, so we should move up a few places in next week's AP poll.

I thought DMW and Trent were seniors. Can they get another year of eligibility because of COVID or something? Given we only have one guy in our recruiting class, retaining them would be nice if it is viabble.
Yes they can come back due to Covid19. I hope they do!

Aparently free throws ain't free. We're payin' a hefty f@#kin fee.

It was really strange to me that Purdue didn't foul at the end. Down 8 with 35 seconds is a lot to overcome. However, the terrible FT shooting the Illini were putting up still seems to suggest fouling there to me.

Offense tonight was...not good, least efficient output of the year so far. Defensively, the most efficient output of the year, so the net effectiveness was about in line with their season average, and the end result was as expected, even with off games from Ayo and Cockburn, thanks to yeoman's work from DMW and Curbelo (+22 on the game), with assists from Hawkins and Miller.

Overall, Illinois still on top of the conference by efficiency margin:

Also, Nebraska, still not good. Now with separation from all of the other 13 teams.

I can’t believe BU isn’t starting Curbelo. What is he thinking? Doesn’t he realize if the Illini lose an important game this year that Curbelo doesn’t start that fans with certainly much more knowledge of the inner workings of the team and the defensive rotations he wants — not to mention coaching acumen— are going to blame him for the loss. No doubt that will lead to JW losing confidence and firing him. All because he just can’t swallow his pride and do what some fans know is best. How short-sighted and stupid of him. /s

I think I've been saying this for the last two weeks and three days isn't going to cut it. More like 10 days and twice on Sunday.
Actually, I'm sure extra ft practice would be productive. The problem seemed to be mental: everyone too juiced up. (If I remember right, Miller missed the first one every single time, and the same way each time, long. Kofi's were all pushed left.) It's not that they don't know how to do it.

While I agree generally, the offense looked like trash (again) to start the game and looked like trash for a 19-0 Purdue run to begin the second half. That isn't indicative of a starting lineup that's optimal on O or on D. It is what it is, and clearly I'm not in a panic over it. Belo also leads the team in steals so he's not that much of a liability on D. I would like to see our starting guards get more dribble drive penetration. Trent doesn't seem to do it much anymore. He has a great floater but hardly ever see it anymore.

Because self evaluation is a tool the good teams constantly use and any evaluation that doesn't conclude that he should be playing starter minutes is broken. Its actually a blessing that Curbelo has embraced coming off the bench because Im not sure that anyone we would send to the bench play would improve anyway.

Do we need to worry about Curbelo talking about how Luke Goode got him the hookup for the Grinch Mambas he was wearing tonight?

I thought he should have fouled then and should have started fouling a lot sooner the final 2 minutes.

it seems more coaches are trying to make sure they lose by less than 10 points and won’t foul at the end so the margin doesn’t go to 11, 12. Is there something in one of the computer models that has a cutoff at a certain spread for a loss not hurting your ranking as much? Or am I imagining that?

I’m not sure BU has earned the right not to be questioned- it’s not like we’re hitting on all cylinders - we’ve lost two very winnable games already this season. I know he was just giving coach speak to not give rise to “who’s starting” but he needs to start Curbelo over Miller at some point, when he wants to,you know, actually play his best lineup.

If Player X, is 5-12 on the season from the foul line, there aren’t any teams that are going to start fouling that player intentionally to get him to the line in the hope he misses. The sample size is too small.

But when you have a player, that is about 50% from the line over 70 attempts, there’s a strong chance that player is going to be put on the line intentionally.

And that is what Illinois needs to avoid. We put Kofi on the bench to prevent teams from fouling him on purpose. No team is going to start fouling Giorgi on purpose just bc he starts the year 5-12 from the line.

Last years stats can be thrown out once you have a large current year sample. See Damonte’s 3s and Kofi’s FTs.

Imagine if we still had Tevian Jones and Alan Griffin so they could start over DMFW and Miller!!

Curbelo, Hawkins, Tev Jones, Alan Griffin and Kofi!! Ayo, Trent, and DMFW off the bench!
I quite frankly do not get the love for tevian Jones he had one good game in Madison Square Garden. But he could not keep his butt out of trouble or do his business in the classroom Alan Griffin is another story, I sure wish he was still here. but he wanted to be closer to home in New York. The Men We have playing for this team are outstanding young men and we need to support them 100%

I agree. The minutes are what matters most and if Curbelo is at 35+ then it doesn’t matter if he’s not in the game to start each half. But on the other hand if he’s getting that many minutes, why not just start him.

I feel like Underwood feels he owes it to Trent to start him being a senior, and he must think the team is too small on the wings if he starts a Curbelo, Ayo, Trent, Damonte, Kofi lineup.

My last post for the night. Trent Frazier is the best on ball defensive player in the Big Ten. when it come to Rutgers and other guards. people wonder why he's not scoring 15 to 20 points a game, it's because he's expanding so much energy into shutting down the other team's top guard like Geo Baker Etc. the guy can play defense! I sure hope he comes back next year and I sure hope he gets defensive player of the year for the Big Ten.

It looked to me that they tried to foul initially but didn't get the calls. The officials probably decided they had enough and wanted to get the heck out of dodge after Trent's steal.

This was definitely a flawed win. But tonight #3 Kansas, #7 Tennessee, #9 West Virginia and #14 Texas Tech all lost. I left #13 Rutgers off the list because they lost to a higher ranked team, but I believe they lost at home. My point.... Take the win. Despite the flaws we won decisively which is more than I can say for five teams ranked ahead of us.

People don’t need him to score 15-20. But we need around ten a night. He has it in him to score. He’s done it before. We just can’t take 35 minutes without scoring if we are gonna get to where we want to get to.

I realize he’s at 9 a game right now, but it’s trending down now that the big has started.

Lol I see you were quick to add this edit. Since the Rutgers game, where he scored 19... He's scored 7 -> 4 -> 5... This sample size isn't enough for me to panic. Willing to bet he finishes the season somewhere around 9PPG, which I'm content with in combination with his lock down defense.

Few years ago, fans were suggesting we should be worried about Trent declaring early... lol. So quick to pull out the pitchforks the second players aren't making the flashy plays. Had pitchforks on Da'Monte for 3 years... and now he's a fan favorite. Let the game play out. Everyones got a role and +/- tends to align with what the coaches choose to put out there
