I don't remember Self calling three point shots fool's gold. He did refer to getting a big lead early as fools gold, but I don't ever recall him saying that about the three point shot.
He said it many, many times while at IL as well.

Speaking as a non-grad, former ‘Townie’ and +/- 50-yr fan: I am knee-deep in umbrage right now… 🤨
Some people are born into it.
Some people buy their way into it.
But what matters is we're all in it.

FTR, I was a fan long before I ever paid tuition at UI and in my experience it's the non-grads who are more enduring in their fandom.

As for the game, I thought it might have been our most complete defensive effort of the year... maybe even our most complete all around game against a quality opponent all year. We still had a couple small droughts but credit to the staff and the players for nipping them in the bud before they became to outrageous.

Me too. Did you grow up in CU?

Lol. That was like 10 years ago. And no he isn't correct. Analytics have proven otherwise. Ask him today. Or any other good div 1 coach.
Agree to disagree for our team this year. We are 8th in the conference in 3 pt % yet we've taken the second most after Penn St. Penn St shoots them at a 39% clip to our 32%. We are shooting 55% on 2 pt fg's, second in the league to Indiana's 56%.

Brad’s dilemma seems to be that they stroke it at (dare I say) an elite level in practice, but for whatever reason, it’s not translating when the bright lights are turned on.

Wouldn’t it be something to behold if they can start clicking at every facet for a run of games? Mid-March would be opportune…

Negatives: Scoring Droughts, Not Running Good Offense At Times, Taking too many 3’s out of the flow of the offense, Some guys…not enough touches

* Foul Shooting was much improved

Overall though…I feel pretty good 👍.
Negative: Missed bunnies or not finishing through contact

RJ was +13 despite going 1-6 for only 3pts in 30 minutes, his second most of the season. His defense has been incredible lately and BU rewarded him with playing time. Hopefully, he can get his shooting stroke back soon.
I was gonna say, it seemed like RJ defense made a huge difference in this game, particularly in the 1st half. He , Sencire, and Rogers take the defensive intensity up 12 notched when they are in. And it helps the team magnificently.

Shooting was bad tonight but most everything else was great. Coleman had a fantastic game- NBA worthy. His defense and skill set will get him a contract one day.

ILL!

No one shot the ball well in this one. We were 40% from the field and 17% from deep.

And yet, we won easily.

Everyone did their job on defense.
I honestly think tonight’s performance should be our floor if we play hard and attack the rim.
If we ever get the offense clicking… watch out.

Good performance; didn’t let last game affect this one.
Hopefully next one Mayer fully recovered from illness.

Ty reminds me a bit of Jordan Morgan from Minnesota.

"Kansas University’s basketball team, which lost its first Big 12 game of the season Tuesday night, 74-63, actually led, 14-9, early in Tuesday’s loss at West Virginia, thanks to some early three-point success.

'It was fool’s gold. We were up 13-9 and hadn’t thrown it inside but once,' KU coach Bill Self said.

'We made three threes, but if you go back and watch the tape, I bet you we had not gotten three 50/50 balls that should have been ours,' the coach continued."
Yeah… he’s talking about getting an early lead, not about three point shots in general. The early lead was the fools gold. The threes were, on this particular night, just the method for getting it.

Yes… in reference to getting an early lead. Not about three point shots in general.

Yeah, I have no skin in the game. I was just providing all three of you discussing this inane quote the context. Honestly, I couldn't care less what Self has to say about anything.

If you get in rythym 3 point opportunities, you need to take them. It keeps the offense moving efficiently and opens up the rest of offense. If they start going down...look out!

Analytics dictate taking the good looks from downtown. The game has changed in last 10 years, and I don't want the team being hesitant and passing up on good looks.
