A win is a win but this one was ugo. I was hoping this type of performance was behind us but not so. We are really going to miss Bos and Wag if that be the case next year. Teams need players with ice water in their veins and they have it.

Had 3 starters on the bench with 2 fouls in the 1H, with 1 of them picking up a 4th shortly into the 2H

Few thoughts on Tomi since he had a rough game:

They opted to blitz/double him every time he touched it. When that happens and the other team wants to take a guy away, you have to adjust and (thankfully) we are in an advantageous position as we can just bring in Z and have Mirk be the screener/hub.

Tomi is averaging 10.5 and 5 on the season coming in and that’s with him having a handful of games on minute restriction. He just doesn’t need to be the guy this year with the emergence of Mirk and Z. Tomi’s FG% is up this year, his 3% is up, he is just no longer the lone hub/screener on offense.

We underperformed overall, but the foul trouble greatly contributed to that. You won’t beat the spread every night, so anytime a game kind of goes sideways like this, it’s good to be able to push through it and slog out a B1G road win.
Well there you go, spouting logic and stuff on Loyalty 😉

Interesting take that the stats platform that has been accurately predicting NCAA season outcomes since 1997, doesn’t consider W-L and purely focuses on archived data is wrong about our team.

Also FWIW mizzou is beating Florida by 3 points with 6 minutes left right now.

Edit: sorry for being so combative but won’t stand for kenpom slander haha

Yeah I think we are top 10 in virtually everything? KP, Torvik, EvanMiya, NET…

I’ll slander Kenpom. It’s either off or small sample size worthlessness.

Illinois is #8 with 3 losses.
Nebraska is #22 with 0 losses and beat Illinois on their home court.

Makes zero sense.

This isn’t just calling you out … It’s calling out this whole attitude in general …
I don't buy your argument, Indy. You seem to be forgetting that PSU's players are also very well paid, not just ours.

We were on the cusp of a blow out for the entire game right from the beginning when we quickly went up 10. Give PSU some credit for not giving up.

This wasn't the Illini's A game, but it was probably a B game with limited minutes by crucial players due to foul trouble, combined with what was probably Tomi's worst game as an Illini (he's had 4 bad games now this year, and 3 of them are conference games, so let's get the effort up in conference games, Tomi). Rebounding was good, defense was outstanding first half, and OK second half, offense was stagnant at times and better when pushing the ball. Even Petro contributed in his time on the floor tonight, which was nice with Keaton's foul trouble.

Mizzou is terrible
Tenn isn’t good either.
And Texas Tech was a homer job.

Illinois is the only team in KenPom top 11 that has 3 losses. Every other team is 0 or 1. So I don’t see this team as at the level Kenpom has them at
Why just site Kenpom? It isn’t the lone metric site out there.

NET: #10
BartTorvik: #10
EvanMiya: #10

Serious question: why does the B1G Network employ LaPhonso Ellis? Aren’t there enough ex B1G players to chose from? His non stop, passive aggressive anti Illinois bias is just tiresome. Just go the F away already. I’m sure the ACC network, or wherever the heck a ND ex hooper would call home, could use an analyst. Thanks for telling me non stop how impressed you were by Mingo, while his team is losing by double digits and Illini have 2 freshmen with more points than him until his garbage time heater
very punchable loudmouth arsehat.....never forgive his actions in satan , knight and phelps lies way back when.......

Tomi needs to work it out, still think he will be fine.

I don't even need to read the thread but I already assume people are acting like we lost when our best player only played 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
I love Keaton- I agree, he's our best player- and I'm grateful he's so good- but isn't that an indictment on the team Underwood built? That our team can't function properly without a freshman we thought might get spot minutes going into the season? That's a PROBLEM

Keaton can be fantastic. Mirk, Z, and Kylan all played well tonight. And people can be frustrated at Tomi because he didn’t play well. He will need to at Carver Hawkeye next week and in future games for this team to reach a 2nd weekend and beyond. All of this can be true.

It’s the opposite, there’s a large enough statistical sample size now to accurately predict each team’s efficiency based on quality of opponents. That calculation is then used to compare outcomes of matchups and can be used to rank all 365 teams. It’s so accurate that Vegas uses it to set there opening lines many times.

There is 0 weight on whether a team wins or loses. Miami (OH) also hasn’t lost, would you say they’re better than our team?

Tomi doesn't have KJ to penetrate the lane and set him up. The offense this year is designed for him to shoot 3's on a pick and pop. How many passes in 14 games have you seen to him or Z in the lane.
Hard to get many offensive rebounds when the offense puts you 20 feet from the basket at all times.

Tomi has been and always will be a SOFT basketball player. He's not going to fight for position or possessions. I've been saying this since last season. A casual observer can see it from the nosebleed seats.

It's not a criticism of his humanity for gosh sakes (as some here seem to imply it is). It's just who he is.
He's SOFT.
If you think he's going to change by the time the tournament starts, you're going to be very disappointed.

Ugly win. That being said multiple times Penn State cut it to nine or ten and I'd have to remind myself "this is a nine or ten point game?" Felt closer, but good teams keep the advantage and the Illini are a good team.

This Penn State team absolutely stinks. That’s why people are concerned that we barely beat them. Purdue will beat them by 40 and Michigan by 50

I agree. Tomis play has been frustrating but what really frustrated me is when we got in the bonus early BU didn't make them attack the rim and we settled when refs were calling fouls over and over. That's what frustrated me most. Kylan and others can attack and get to the line instead of settling early in the clock for threes when we are in the bonus. So much of the offense was passing it around the arc and when your in the bonus and the games being called pretty tight or they are struggling to defend then attack the goal.
