Illinois 76, Rutgers 58 Postgame

We're not gonna lose many games when Shannon and Domask are our #1 & #2 and get theirs, and we get 20 & 20 combined from Gary A., Hawkins, and Rodgers. Plus Goode ~10pts.

That box score is a thing of beauty.

Rutgers beat Bryant and they beat FAU.
I probably could have phrased “not that good” better, but my point was that I don’t think this Rutgers team is as good as the last couple years. And as the currently 10th ranked BIG team in Kenpom (64th overall), just beating them on the road wouldn’t have convinced me we’re capable of beating most BIG teams on the road, but the way we beat them did convince me.

This was a very impressive win. Experience with some solid depth will win many games.

With the Illini having these great stats, I am inclined to believe they should be in every game.

Win at MSQ, and the Tennessee game is no way a shoo-in for the Vols.

Good start to the B10, if I recall RU was projected #10 in the conference preseason. Lot of work left to do, but great 1st step.

Ball movement. Patience finding shots. Protecting the rim. Cohesiveness on both sides of the ball.

I think Underwood can use the tape of this game as a flowing visual example of what he means when he said “he wanted to get old as a roster”. This was a demonstration of well coached, superior decision-making basketball.

When we pushed the score on em to 64-44, I slapped my chest and declared “WHO WANTS SOME UH ILLINOIS?!?!?”. The thing is, I happen to be at the beach in Mexico at the moment, and I got some wild looks from the locals.

Yeah, I’m down in the panhandle of FL for two weeks looking at a house. I made the mistake of walking into a sports bar this afternoon with 40 (yup, 40) tv’s all tuned to the ‘Bama/Georgia game. You could have heard a pin drop when I asked them to change just one tv to the Illinois-Rutgers basketball game.

If someone is nearby to Panama City Beach, would you stop by Joey’s Bail Bonds and vouch for me?

Rutgers is athletic and they run that press really well. They kept switching it up from 1-2-2 to 2-1-2 etcetera. More turnovers should be expected when you're up against something like that, but we also beat it more than a few times with easy buckets and the energy they used running it had them totally gassed by the 8 minute mark in 2nd half.

I'm actually more on the side of we were successful enough against it that I'm not sure other teams watch that and think it'd be a great idea to press us. We have an absolute lightning bolt at SG, length at every position which helps us move the ball up the floor with passes that smaller players wouldn't get away with making or catching, and bigs who can sprint down the floor.

Really impressed with this showing. Thought everyone brought valuable minutes, especially with the early foul trouble. Felt like Harmon could have shown off his scoring a bit more as he passed up one or two very open looks. Recall seeing Domask being animated with him after he passed one up. Hope he builds back that confidence. The long break looked to really help the offense (along with having Coleman back).

Did they put it on for you?

5 takeaways:
1. Shannon looks like an NBA player. Bigger, stronger, faster than everyone else
2. The press will keep giving us trouble. Better teams than Rutgers are taking note of our PG issue.
3. Turnovers and free throws can continue to be a problem, but 7/11 from the charity stripe is better.
4. Defense and rebounding are terrific. Those are directly affected by effort which shows that this team is bought in.
5. 18 pt win @ the RAC? I'll take it every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
#2 and #3 are going to be an enormous issues, especially late in games. We had a run vs Marquette where we got up 5 or 6, then couldn't handle the ball and ended up down 7. Up 17 or 18 today in the first half, the lead was almost completely because of the same issues.

I love Ty, but let's face it....he's part of the opponents game plan with regards to weaknesses to exploit.

I can't imagine any team seeing what we did against that press today and thinking it's the blueprint to beating us. Sure, we had the turnovers, but we also beat their press often and they were totally gassed from running it with 8-10 minutes left in the game. That's what a press does, it creates turnovers. The thing a press also does, is give up easy buckets when you have long players who can advance the ball by passing instead of dribbling, a SG who is faster than any other player on the court, and bigs who will sprint down and catch a pass and make a layup.

As much flak as Ty gets on here, again he's nearly the best PG in the B1G as far as taking care of the ball, which is what you want with a PG. He's not a flashy scorer, which I feel like is what people see in other PGs and think it's necessary. He hasn't had any of these 5+ turnover games like many of the other PGs that everyone else likes to salivate over like Epps, Dennis, etcetera (and without mentioning his defensive ability). He's already shown some improvement as a playmaker in the last couple of games as well, imo. Give the team some time to gel and he'll look better as the primary ballhandler as the season progresses.
