1989 flying Illini was a great season - Final 4. Nick hitting 30 footer to win at Indiana. I was fortunate enough to be there.

And whichever way the game goes... the truly good (shall we say 'Elite'?) teams rise to the occasion when the game is tight and on the line. That's the best takeaway from what happened in Cornhusker land last night... that the Illini did just this. Good lesson for the season and Madness Time.

Magic Johnson used to call this crunch "Winnin' Time".

Good teams 'know' they are going to win when it is crunch time. Mediocre and poor teams don't believe in themselves and literally will themselves to lose. That's why so many 'good' teams win those one and two point games. They 'knew' they were going to win and did just enough to do it. As many years as hoops has been around, this never seems to change.

Baylor definitely put it to last year's Illinois team in the non-conference. You could see them dial it up when the game was still in doubt and put on the screws. The 2005 Illini did the same thing, time and time again. I'd say the elite teams not only put the screws on their opponent, they do so with a margin of error that makes it highly likely that they win even with a bad break or two down the stretch. So for the teams I would call elite, a one possession game is too tight to leave it there --they try to put it away so firmly that the other team starts to lose its will.

Very few teams have both the mentality and the talent to execute like that against top-25 teams. This squad has been able to put away teams which is really encouraging. I think it's an open question whether they can keep this up against the contenders in the conference race, but thus far, they've been very mature in handling success. Night and day difference IMO to Groce's tenure, where talent would play down to the competition.

Just a happy coincidence. Got it.
I don't really gamble but my hunch is that spreads are at least kind of informed by analytics rather than the gut feeling of a bookie. There's some market correction but I doubt that's a big factor in regular season cbb. I don't know.
Anyway, was just reporting a potential trend I saw in the data. Carry on.
The spread is based on whatever causes the bets to be split 50/50. If more people bet on Illinois, the spread moves to make that a less attractive bet.

That’s all there is to it.

Vegas makes the most when it is exactly 50/50 dollar wise.

Curious wonder why this wasn't reviewed and a technical assessed... What is the penalty

  • May not distract the shooter when they have the ball and are ready to shoot.
Well it kind of evened out when a player in street clothes jacks up a three from the Illini bench after a whistle. I thought it was funny and showed how badly he wants back put there. It wouldn't have been though if Curbelo would have gotten a bench T.
He has to be a smarter teammate. Even in street clothes! Lol

Rad

Nashville, TN
Also thought from the start Kofi’s normal energy was missing
Another possibility is the decreased practice time associated with the Covid outbreak adversely effecting conditioning.

This is NOT a knock on Trent. It's a knock on thoughts of what numbers will be hanging. That is supposed to be an "elite" honor. An honor for Players of the Year, All Americans, etc. Kofi makes that cut.

TF has been a great ambassador for the university, he's been loyal, he's been a swiss army knife for his team....he's the kind of kid that a coach dreams about having. That said, has he ever been even mentioned for conference player of the year? How highly is he thought of when All Conference teams have been elected?

We love TF. He's earned that. Like someone said, he's an everyday, lunch pail, bring the effort daily guy. However, if you do that for him, you open the door for a LOT of numbers being up there.

Is Malcolm Hill up there yet?

That honor has to remain for the who's who of Illinois basketball. Again, not a knock on TF. Just can't start putting every number in the rafters for a fan favorite or just a really, really good player. BU seems to be a little flippant when he makes that comments, but he should be. He loves his guys.
You make a valid point which is why I asked earlier in the thread “WILL Trent’s jersey hang from the rafters?” I actually thought about Malcom too. My first favorite player was Kenny Battle. He and Trent share many of the same qualities. How many post season awards did he receive? I don’t recall many but I am not sure. Kenny was here 2 seasons. Trent 5. I haven’t been to SFC (Assembley Hall) since 1979 but I think Kenny’s is there. I’m not saying Trent definitely deserves to see his jersey hoisted but I do believe he is definitely in the discussion. And that is what we are doing now lol.

I think Battle is up there by virtue of being on the All Century team. Could be wrong. If that is the case, then Trent has a shot at having his jersey honored in 2105. As it stands now, he'd be on my All Century team.

Speaking of this photo and referencing something I’ve asked about multiple times before, why do we never see the WHITE ‘89 throwback jerseys anymore?? We wore them for a few years and then seemingly ditched them in favor of the orange, as if we can’t have both?!?!

Still waiting for an epic road/neutral court game where we bust out the blue throwbacks…

They're just not part of the jersey rotation anymore. The script Illinois jerseys have replaced them.

Seems silly to not have both.

Personally, I say we ACTUALLY rebrand this program by calling back to the glory days! Wearing a classic jersey doesn’t just belong to Indiana or Kansas.

Home: White ‘89 throwbacks
Away: Blue ‘89 throwbacks
Alternate: Orange ‘89 throwbacks (above)

Throwback/Big Games: White script (above)

Then, when the time is right in 2024-25, make us all feel ridiculously old by wearing the 2005-style jerseys as throwbacks!

The numbers don't tell the entire story. In the first half He was forcing things often very early in the shot clock without Kofi touching the ball. Kofi only had 7 shots in the first half and touched in much less too. Our PG needs to focus on getting Kofi the ball and spreading the floor or him working one on one. In the second half Kofi had 11 shots, passed out for open shots, and open lanes for multiple lay ups. The numbers don't tell the whole story.
Go read the post i was responding to. The guy framed it SOLELY in the context of his shooting percentages.
