Illinois 82, Kansas 75 (Exhibition) Postgame

Can Rodgers/Dain play a pick/roll game if there are two shooters on the wings? Rodgers can finish at the rim if given the chance. Dain can score in close. I do worry about Rodgers getting his pocket picked coming down the lane.

Not saying some pick and rolls with those two wouldn't work(cause I'm sure it could), but I think if Rodgers has the other teams PG guarding him I'd like to see more iso's or post ups created for him than bringing a larger defender to him. He is just too big and strong for 90% of the PGs we play to stop one on one. And he is obviously more than capable of finding the open man if he's doubled.

TSJ is going to be the best athlete on the court for the vast majority of our games. Kansas has some serious talent (The KJ Adams dunk was spectacular & McCullar is a fabulous player), but no one could keep up with him. He's an absolute stud.

Coleman looks so much more fluid. He has always seemed like he was in a hurry. You could speed him up with pressure and he would make mistakes. It appears the game is finally slowing down for him. He looks much more confident. If he consistently plays with the pace he had last night, he is an extremely difficult matchup, and will make everyone else better.

The 5th year transfers were all really solid. They can all do a little of everything.

While there wasn't a huge volume of assists, there was much better ball movement, leading to defenders out of position or exploitable matchups. They did a great job of keeping the Jayhawks a half step behind them.

Poise and hustle carried the day. If we can keep those as priorities, we're going to be pretty happy around here.
Agreed, I've been a huge proponent of CoHawk's ceiling for a couple years...But he's a) playing within himself on offense and b) not playing with guys putting him in untenable situations on offensive sets.
His outside shooting is great in the right circumstances... Trying to cross guys over from 25 feet for a step back 3 is just not where he ever looked comfortable. As a stretch 5 in an offense that gets him clean looks, he's lethal.

And better yet, with his passing instincts and ability to push the ball on the break, he's making TJ even more of a problem.
I think he's going to have a phenomenal year.

I agree with this plan for Rogers/Coleman. Will it work with Rogers/Dainja when the opposing big can stay in close? I don't know.

Was really no different than a November 12th game. Both teams wanted to win. Kansas did nothing out of the ordinary. It was a real game. No matter what you want to label it.
Being at the game... it was played as hard, rough, and tough as an NCAA tournament game. Trash talk and all. Both teams were going as hard as possible and they both wanted that win very badly. There was panty of bloodshed. That was a real ad it gets. Trust me. Great win and grit by this team! 👏🏾 💪🏾

Seeing a lot of people comment on the amount of layups we gave up. I think you all are missing two important pieces.

1) That’s how basketball is played now. The reality is it’s much better to give up layups than open 3’s. (Kofi is playing overseas and wasn’t a top 10 draft pick for a reason.) And we did a REALLY good job running Kansas off the three point line. The commentary that they are a bad three point shooting team is ridiculous. We locked them down from three. What we saw was good defense, not a poor shooting opponent.

2) We don’t give up that many layups against anyone not named Kansas. They might be the only team we see this year outside of the tourney with comparable length and athleticism. Re-watch the Ottowa game. Every layup they took got swatted into to bleachers. Our length is going to bail us out of a lot of those situations this year.

Those two did some PnR together on Sunday and it was fine.

For me, if we would have lost by 7....the most important thing is still what's on film. Are we going to be ranked 15th because of the win?
We should be top ten in my opinion. But the season is long and we can prove ourselves throughout. Like coach said, "we have to play like that every game, not just because it was number 1 ranked Kansas".

Defense needs to get better, have to get back on missed baskets. They had some runouts on us. Luke just didn't have his head in this game. Have to realize if the fouls counted Hawkins would have been out with about 4-5 minutes left. Wanted to see more Danja. Domansk is a keeper, plays well under pressure as well as Gurrier. Good win to build on but don't thiunk for a minute that Self made mental notes about the Illini and if they meet again they will be better prepared, hopefully the Illini will be too.
Kansas player KJ Adam's had been fouled out the game in a true game. Had 6 fouls in the game with a lot of time left in the game.

Not yet - most recent still shows week 1 - Oct 16.
Next AP poll comes out in a couple weeks after real games have been played.

I do think the win over Kansas will positively impact voters' views on the Illini despite being an exhibition. On the News-Gazzette basketball podcast, Scott Richey (who votes in the AP poll) said as much. He voted the Illini 23rd in the pre-season poll and said they would move up in his next vote (while reserving on the exact spot until his vote was due, signaled mid-teens would be a reasonable range).

Suspect the win will help Illinois more than it hurts Kansas in the short-term; in the end just need to keep winning games...

Maybe CoHawk has the ability to push the ball on the break but he hasn't shown that at all this year yet. I haven't seen any instances where the Illini end up with an advantage in transition when CoHawk brings up the ball. He is a competent ball handler but I wish he would make some outlet passes off of the rebound instead of bringing the ball up so that the Illini can get some transition hoops.
