Illinois 97, Michigan 68 Postgame

#177
To some extent, Michigan's decision hinges on how poorly the rest of the season goes. KenPom has the Wolverines projected to finish at 11-20, which would probably be grounds for termination, even if it means risking losing a major commitment from top-30 recruit Khani Rooths.
But if they can go 6-6 down the stretch and pick up a couple of quality wins along the way, maybe they let their Fab Five coach come back for another year.
Okay, but after that…I think they should all get a try! Just go right down the line…5 years or so, for each. Maybe start with Chris Webber. We already know he’s good at calling timeouts.

I would like to see Hawkins, Quincy and Luke work on their defense. Of Michigan's 24 field goals last night 20 were in the paint. That needs to stop now! If they can't keep Omiyuri, Young and Julian Reese out of the paint it will be a long sad trip to the east coast. It seemed like every time Luke and Dra stepped on the floor last night within a few seconds they fouled someone. Luke's shooting has been horrible, he has been billed as a top free throw shooter yet what I have heard is CLANG! For this team to be very good they need some scoring from Quincy, Harmon and Luke on a consistent basis.
Every coach in America would take the opposing team taking and making 20 shots in the paint and 1 three for the game….

Oof. Just heard on Sleepers that Michigan has lost 17 games up to this point in their season. And they have failed to cover the spread in any of those loses.

They made it so easy for us on offense, I can see why they haven't gotten any backdoor covers.

BU tried to help, I think that's the earliest I've ever seen a coach send in the bench to call off the dogs.

The only time I’ve seen the bench empty that early was back in the early 2000s when Illinois was just blasting Iowa at home. It was when Frank was still at Illinois, because I remembered Kruger having to bring him back in to give one of the benchwarmers a breather. Given that was against Iowa, that was a lot of fun.

At least in the first game Michigan played hard for 30 minutes. Last night they couldn't muster 15. TJ hit a few 3's and it was over... It's not an untalented team... Just really, really soft.

I didn't notice this until I watched the highlights to the game, but did anyone else see Coach Underwood shaking hands with the Michigan players after the game? Instead of the typical cursory handshake that you normally see, he stopped and talked to several of them. Class act Coach, thank you.

He was just telling each and every one of them that TSJ is a helluva teammate and letting them know what they missed out on. 😉

Not to give this terrible take any attention, but... it should be easy to keep Omoruyi out of the paint on this trip to the east coast, considering Rutgers isn't part of this road trip.

Your right. I thought we went to Rutgers instead of PSU.

Their defense was almost embarrassingly bad to watch. No court awareness, no energy, no communication, and most of the time no idea what scheme they are supposed to be running. Coleman's coast to coast layup and Quincy driving for a dunk while a guy had his back to the court were just two obvious examples. If Illinois ever looked that bad we would be tossing BU out the door in a heartbeat.

Allowing Goode a wide open 3 to end the half on a simple drive-and-kick was another one where it's like "did anyone read the scouting report? Did anyone WRITE the scouting report?"

I think he might be just over the limit, but wish at this point Amanai could just redshirt. Love what I have seen and seems to have a bright future, just hate to see him burn this year when he has been so limited with injury.

Does this 'back issue' predate his time at Illinois?

Going to try and keep track of this:

Since our MSU loss we are #25 in defense on T-Rank out of 104 teams that have played.

Let’s see if the refocus on that end remains …
