This is a train wreck.
Not much else to say except this search has been handled very, very badly.
Once the coaches are named be prepared to be underwhelmed.

If they have 2 posistions filled. They need to announce them. Even if the OC is the one not filled. This looks really bad. Has to either be a miss. Or a "I can't except till I see if I get something else"

I can't believe it's been nearly 4 weeks and there's been nothing but silence. Not even a half-way believable twitter rumor.

Because no one outside of Illini football diehards is paying attention.

Except all those pesky "casual observers," I suppose.

Any business understands that you need to be in control your own narrative. Coach Smith and the Illinois athletic department has lost control.
If you aren’t controlling their own story someone else will. You better believe that this lack of coaching clarity is being used against us in the recruiting arena.
Playing it close to your vest is one thing but this is way past that.

Especially those fanatics on public forums who intend on steering the narrative in whatever direction they need in order to support the ideas they have generated in their heads.

Or... it's under control, our recruits have been kept in the loop, we're working the details out and everything is under control. Even if offers have fallen thru, do you think it's better to run around freakin out like previous regimes? I think the silence might represent how well it's being handled. That doesn't mean we aren't experiencing difficulties, but I tend to believe it's being handled as well as possible. If it can't be a great hire then I at least hope for someone to make some trolls' heads explode. If I can't have a great OC then I can at least hope for comedic value.

Do you have a list of coaches who would be acceptable or is being underwhelmed a fait accompli for you?

For all we know, the OC candidate could be deciding between Illinois and Alabama. Sorry you guys are bent out of shape for not being kept in the loop. For that reason, I think it's been handled very, very well.

Ooh, look at Alabama controlling the narrative: disgraced cheater Hugh Freeze is reportedly visiting Alabama's facilities. Interested in joining Nick Saban's staff, possibly as offensive coordinator, but not necessarily. Too bad Illinois can't control the narrative like that.

Finally!! Someone gives an example of how someone else is 'controlling the narrative'!!!! Thank you ILL_INI!! Now all you Chicken Littles can say told-ya-so!!:tsk:

“Do I have a list of OC candidates that would be acceptable”? No I don’t have a list. But I’m not paid millions of dollars a year to keep a list on hand when I fire a coach.
When Coach Smith was asked if he had someone in mind for the OC position he said “I’m prepared”. Of course this was after he said he didn’t expect any staff changes.
I’m not anti ILLINI football I just don’t like poorly managed events. By any reasonable observation this has been poorly managed.
Unless our new OC coach is working for a team playing this weekend there is no excuse for this mess.
I’m glad we have a lot of optimistic fans on this board. I just wish more of them were also more realistic.

Illinois is a perennial garbage program that has won a grand total of 5 games in Lovie's first 2 years here. The offense can't move the football, can't score points, and currently lacks a quarterback that can reliably throw a football. That the OC search is going less than well is not a 'hot take.'

I believe that you know absolutely nothing, just like the rest of us. How exactly do you know the OC search is going 'less than well'? Please provide proof such as links to where you are getting the information that this is the case. You, IlliniMed, Pekinfan, and some others, are really making an argument that not a single one of you can provide any context for. Simply saying you are not happy because you are uninformed of the process is a very poor argument to make.

Nice of you to throw that Unless in your last post Pekinfan. While you only gave one 'unless' there could actually be several. Scroll back through the posts, there were many 'unless'-es given by some reasonable posters/fans.

I wasn't asking you to hire the new assistants but you seem very fervent in your belief that the process has been poorly managed and the end result will be underwhelming. I just figured you had some guys in mind that we missed on due to some lack of effort or ability on Lovie's part. Otherwise it seems you are content to call this a failure without one single shred of evidence or idea of what you wanted to see.

Illini football fans are about the least optimistic group I've ever encountered, but most are willing to at least wait until the hire is announced before calling it a failed process.

It’s most plausible that we are waiting to see how coaching spots in the NFL come together. Lovie probably has offered an OC who is waiting to see if he gets an NFL job before he accepts. I’m not too worried. I trust Lovie.

I enjoy reading the comments how people demand names etc.

I heard it's Bill Belicheck and they are waiting until after the Super Bowl. I guess the fued between him and Brady is so bad he wants to destroy UM year in and out.

I believe this to be the most likely scenario as well. Currently the Giants, Titans, Cardinals, Lions and Colts have head coaching openings and will need Assistants.

The Pats and Vikings will almost assuredly be losing their Offensive Coordinators in the process. Lots of moving parts and the Steelers could be due for a shakeup as well offensively or at the top.

I think PekinFan suffers from being a Pekin Fan. Channel your pessimism from watching them to something else. That's a 7A school in Central Illinois that can barely compete with 5A teams in their conference.

Lovie has always kept things quiet. Sure there have probably been a few misses. I refuse to be worried until I see a name announced that I do not like. Until then, I will hope for the best.

Todd Haley anyone? :D ;)

Absolutely undeniable. This is what LS and JW are up against. Yet the goofballs on fan forums think these two guys simply have no idea how to go about hiring a coach. No chance that the Illinois Football brand has made that process incredibly difficult. By God, these guys need to do... something?

Yeah, my money is going to go on “LS and JW have absolutely zero idea how important this OC position is and how to go about filling it.” Because that obviously makes the most sense. Fill that position, by God! Sure, you need to make sure you get the best guy possible, but for the love of pancakes, what about the narrative! We could have had Morgan Freeman narrating the story, but now we’re stuck with Jim Nabors! Oh, the humanity!

I don't think any of us are saying that Lovie and Whitman have "no idea what's going on." I think if anything, the lack of information coming out is causing many of us to worry, in addition to the knowledge we have not one, but three positions to fill at minimum.

Add that to the fact that Lovie's original OC hire didn't exactly inspire a whole lot of confidence and that it has been about a month and people are becoming more paranoid by the day.

Also, from my previous experience following coaching hires, if it has been this long, it is because several people have said no, not because you are "waiting to announce the hires at the same time."

I get it guys, Lovie should be holding a press conference every week to update the fans.

Let's be real here, this is revisionist theory at it's finest. McGee was extremely highly thought of when he first arrived. There were questions of how much control he had of the offense at Louisville, but let's be clear. That was considered a HOME RUN hire for us at the time. We pulled an OC from a much higher rated program. McGee was also getting looks from other higher profile programs if I remember correctly (wasn't Oklahoma interested?).

Not everything works out, and clearly McGee needed more weapons for his offense to be successful. Let's hope that Lovie is able to pull another rabbit out of his hat, except this time the OC will be successful with the pieces he has to work with...

To say what? Lovie strides in, says we haven't hired yet, but we have a process and it is proceeding they way we want it to. Lovie strides out of the room. You want that?
