The saying defense wins championships is such a cliche and over used its laughable.

Scoring more than your opponent is the literally the only thing that matters. Defense typically isn't the reason that happens.

I think my brain almost exploded when reading this line. Is this sarcasm? I'm honestly not sure.

Scoring more than your opponents IS the only thing that matters. However, defense is ALSO typically the reason that happens. I mean, at least 50% the reason.

In order to score more points than the opponent, there has to be a group of motivated individuals that make sure the opponent doesn't score more than you right? That's still called the defense? And not some new term like anti-offense...or bizarro-offense?

To stay on topic:

Seems like the cat has been let out of the bag that it's Rod Smith.

Pretty good pedigree in terms of QB development and offensive efficiency, but yet again we're getting someone who didn't call the plays.

I also have the same concern if this is true and if he's never called plays...

Well, not calling plays before, if true, is a concern for me. However, he needs to start somewhere. Plus, with his experience in RichRod's system, I trust he gets it.

ps- I don't mean to be pessimistic, the pedigree is very good.

Uh, I think all of us call the plays when we're watching the game. Except we have no comm link to the sidelines to let them know what we're thinking.

Smith is about as good as we could expect to land given the current state of the Illinois program, and he will look even better if he can bring a QB experienced in his system.

But what does it say about Lovie's process that that McGee was fired at least two weeks before Rod Smith even became available?:huh: What exactly was the original plan?

Weren't there rumors that McGee was fired for reasons off the field? If that was the case, there probably wasn't a ton of time to plan.

It also could explain why the process has been extended. Originally they were looking at one guy and getting that together...then Rod Smith became a possibility so they extended the search in order to see how that played out. Just spit-balling.

Well it could say that McGee was fired for things other than performance and therefore his firing needed to be immediately.

Or.

It says that if McGee was fired for performance that Lovie was intelligent in waiting until he had the entire picture of who was available (that he had a realistic shot at getting).

Waiting and patience don’t equate to the failure of the plan, whatever that plan may have been.

Agree with all of this.

Smith has been the QB coach, so between the two, I'd take Smith as well.

Several on here have mentioned Brandon Dawkins as possibly, hopefully, coming here with Smith.

If I read correctly, he will be a senior this year. Will he be a grad transfer, or are we hoping he can transfer without sitting due to a head coaching change. Is that allowed, or only for getting out of a LOI, like Chris Redmon or Tilman in bball?

Grad transfer. Eligible immediately

Interesting discussion, several comments:

McGee was indeed thought to be a steal when we got him. Nickerson was the stretch for Lovie's connections. McGee supposedly nurtured a Heisman Trophy.

Can't believe McGee was fires for performance. He inherited a vacuated cupboard, and had incredible bad luck with injuries. If McGee's functional performance was unacceptable, what does that say about Lovie. I think the team deserved at least two more years.

So if McGee was fired for off the field issues, it was likely not part of Lovie's grand plan.

Defense wins championships. Offense is variable in any sport. You will have pad days. Defense shows up every day - again in any sport. Therefore, offense can get you to 9-3, you need a defense for 12-0. Anybody remember Dave Williams record game against OSU. Who won that? As I recall it ended up as a OSU recruiting highlight. That said, 9-3 looks really good to me at this point.

Keep the faith bros. If nothing else, I love the idea that Lovie is building the team from the lines outward. I think Nickerson was a steal. If he is the result of Lovie's connections, give me more. If we had an average offense the defense would have shined this year. QB situation is a bind, but Smith and Dawkins could easily buy us time for the young guys to shine.

Really, really like Lovie. Main reason... Kids played hard for him all year. I think he is the guy, we will know for sure in two years team. Let's enjoy the ride.

McGee was let go for reasons other than performance. It was discussed on one of the forums here... I don't know what the reason was, but several posters alluded to the fact (that they knew) that it was bad and not performance related.

Also - someone mentioned that the DB's coach that was let go was terminated for similar reasons as McGee, whatever those were.
