Why is there no news on the recruiting front? Anything positive happening out there?

This was the other thing I had heard that I forgot to mention. Was told that they also wanted to move a high school game to Saturday (only during the week of our Friday game) so he could show up for the high school game (for evaluating). All these things seem a little odd and show some disconnect from Beckman.

You really think it was Beckman's decision to have a game on Friday night? There may be a disconnect between Beckman and the high school coaches but this is not part of that disconnect. Either this came from the AD having an idea about playing a game on a Friday night or BTN saying that we have to have a game on Friday night. Either way this was out of Beckman's control.

I'm not sure, but my guess is that if he had a vote, his vote didn't count as much as others. I'll assume someone thought of the potential issue and just felt the exposure was of greater benefit.

I thought I read somewhere that is was the BTN, not Beckman or Thomas. If I remember correctly, it said they wanted to have it on Thursday night.

A few items of interest it sounds like Brodner is basically ours to lose. Ihope to start watching tapes starting with his. Scouts reported 8 offers out of Texas and more than half were o-and d-line guys.

Cali who is brodner what position?

Quick Google search says Sam Brodner from Glen Ellyn IL is a 5'10" 210lb running back. He's got an offer from some MAC schools as well as us and Nevada.

Watched his Hudl tape, he looks like a true power B1G running back. Reminds me of a white running back who came through the league several years ago, just can't remember who. I think he will excel between the tackles. Not a flashy high profile recruit, but I'm a fan. Looks like a football player for sure. Could even move to FB if he adds another 20 pounds.

There are legit questions about Brodner playing high D1. That said, he's an absolute animal of a RB at the HS level. Best RB ever at Glenbard West and that's saying something.

What position? Linebacker seems to be the only possible position. Could be a solid special teamer as well.

I can see a safety out of him depending on his actual speed. He looks like he has some burst in some of the highlights I saw but I'm not positive he has the speed to play there. He does like to hit and you can see that while he has the ball or when he is blocking.

STAR LB. He's about 5'11 or 6'0 and might be a hair slow to be a RB but has shown promise on D and has a great build for that spot.

Unless he gains a lot of speed without dropping too much weight, I can't see him being a D1 safety, seeing as he lacks both the speed and height. I really think a short yardage RB is his best role, and it is one I think he can excel at the D1 level. Definitely agree that he is a tough kid who loves to hit. Could be excellent in pass protection as well.

Okay, I'll admit that intrigues me. I'm still partial to having him as a short yardage/lead blocking back who could excel at pass protection, but I guess I can see him playing STAR too. Certainly not safety.

Just curious, do you think he was worth the offer? Furthermore, would you rather see him on offense or defense (independent of where you actually think he will play)?

As always, your input and expertise is great, and I am enjoying this mini back and forth of analysis we have going on. Just being clear that I mean no disrespect if I seem to be disagreeing. Just exploring your different ideas :thumb:

He's a great back and a productive one at that at the high school level playing in big boy ball in Illinois. However I feel like at the college level he lacks a bit of explosiveness and top-end speed to be a long-term RB. That being said, I do think as long as he can become a technically-sound tackler, he has the balance, body control, and solid enough speed to go along with a good build, to be a nice STAR linebacker or WLB. He isn't a tall dude, but in a way he has similar measurables as Ashante Williams, who was pretty good at the position.

If Ashante Williams turns out to be a good comparison, then I would love him to be at star! Unfortunately, I think his skill set would be like a harder hitting Mike Svetina, and that man has certainly had his issues at LB. I don't see him being as explosive as Ashante.

Again, it is just a difference of preference. I would rather see him employed as a situational back to get the tough short yardages.

I have been a long time lurker on this site but never posted because I didn't make an account. Anyway I'm a senior at GBW and I have seen Western Michigan and Nevada talking to Brodner during gym. Hope he goes here though worst case scenario he is a good special teams player.
