@calibear: love your tape reviews/ratings.

By chance did you ever do that for any of our walk-on OL this year? Looks like we have 4 freshman walk-on OL.. wondering if you think any of them have a shot to develop into a 2-deep type player?

Mike Parisi
Jack Broeker
Matt Long
Max Marietti

I watched tape on all them and posted about them months ago
Matt Long C/G 3* 5.5
Jack Broeker T 3* 5.5
Dean Arendt Fb 3* 5.5
Mike Parisi T/G 3* 5.5
I can not find Marietti
I have a OLb Jimmy Marchese 2 5.4
Qb Alex Mussat who I can not remember if watch tape. At the time I was very pleased with these guys as I thought all could eventually possibly help. That they were in other years the equal of are bottom 4 or 5 signees. Don't expect to see them if ever before their rs junior year.

It has become very clear to me the effect of this investigation is having. The school is offering a slew of kids who might be okay physically but are unbelievably raw. To the point that they will be large gambles if that is all we get.
Jerod Alton is one of those is best positions are on offense but is offered as a cb were he needs work on all aspects of the position technically he received a 5.45 2* as a cb. AS a rb/slot receiver he was a 5.55 3* were we have a number of kids in front on the team or the recruiting fields.

Is that something you see as unique to this class? Just curious as to whether they view these guys as late bloomers/low profile, which has been a staple of our recruiting, or if it really is something directly attributable to SC

Is it the investigation or the fact people think Beckmann will leave after this year? I think the latter if they win 7 games in the regular season we might see a late pickup

Thanks @calibear! Arendt isn't going to make it to Illinois - he went to college of dupage.

Here is some film on Marietti:

I have mentioned a couple time I believe here ( never completely trust the memory) that previously in the last 6 years I have been active on the Illini websites. That we came in under 300 offers for the entire year at signing day.
We are currently around 320-325. Additional offers from senior tape and juco's usually net at least 25 more. Were these offers might come in.
So yes I think it is extremely unique to this class particularly with the way last season closed.
To me it is pointing directly at this sham of the investigation or should I say stage coach robbery by the law firm:mad:. Either they saw the writing on wall early or just got scared but they started offering these kids that need at least another year just to show if maybe they can be a maybe with coaching.

I not only enjoy Calibear's insight into recruits but also his use of emoticons :thumb:.

Hope he is not pulling a Ballard and hinting at a commit for a month or so... Has recruiting sunk so low that we are now getting dragged along by 2* players?

Read he is cleared through clearinghouse but not Illinois admissions.

as sad as it might sound....its harder to get into illinois why alot of top talent dont come here...its a top school....i made excellent grades and didnt get accepted into uicu but got accepted into tosu easily.....

our academic standards are too much for some of these players.....sad but true

From what I read Alton can not qualify presently. This part I am not sure but I think he is an Ncaa qualifier and that it is the school.

This.

Ballard was supposedly ready to pop, and then just complete radio silence.

Alton wanted to commit, and the school is holding it up because they insist on having standards elevated above the clearinghouse.

I know everyone loves Ballard and I like him but right now there are 2 guys we are in on now I like a shade better Brandon Benson and Roddrick Bryant both are sitting with a 5.7 3* grade in my book while Ballard. 5.65.:thumb:

Ballard has a crappy high school QB/offense. Put him in a real system and his rating would be much higher. Look at how many of the balls in his highlight video are underthrown.. and because of that he has to slow down to catch them.

Oh one point on Ballard I have had a feeling over the past month grow that he is waiting for better offers. Still might come if he gets them but probably an ego thing that a lot of in state guys appear to have. 2 or 3 every year.

I only dabble on this thread, so this has probably been addressed before, but Beckman's status HAS to impact recruiting. The lack of winning is obvious and will be known by the end (or late) of the year. The abuse/medical issues are much tougher to address since I don't think we will have a definitive answer by the end of the year and that assumes players/parents don't make up thier mind regardless of any legal or investigative proceedings.

From what I've heard, that's not the case, though I can see why you think that because on the surface it looks that way.

It is admissions and transcripts correct with Ballard and Alton. But I love that we are making our presence felt in and around St. Louis. A great way to grow the program

Is the staff not telling these recruits until right before they commit that they don't qualify? I would think a review of a student's transcript occurs prior to a serious scholarship offer to avoid these confusing/embarrassing announcement delays.

Who is being embarrassed exactly?:confused:

Mostly the recruits... They are about to commit to playing Power5 football at a top university and suddenly have to explain to family and friends that the delay is due to their grades not being up to par.

Clear communication between staff and recruits should avoid these situations (if grades really are the cause in these two situations).

They're still getting a D1 scholarship somewhere, and it isn't as if the schools are coming out and saying "Yeah, he was going to come here, but he failed himself in the classroom." They pick a new school and move on, it's not like the coaches will always know from the get-go when it comes to the borderline recruits. I don't think it's embarrassing at all. Disappointing, sure.
